View Full Version : Coincidence or Eye-Opening?

Right bare with me guys, I'm not too sure how best to describe this.

But have you ever say; learned a new word or brought a t-shirt and then realised that so many other people are saying that word or are wearing that t-shirt after you've learned/brought it?

For example, I learnt what the word 'vignette' meant the other day and I have heard so many people say it since, when I had previously never heard it spoken before!

Another example is the word 'bespoke' I had only learnt what it meant late last year and I keep seeing it everywhere written in books, on signs and people keep saying it!

And another example, when I got my first car, which was a very rusty piece of poo (that I loved), I had never seen one before on the roads - or at least that's what I thought! But since driving it, I've seen so many on the road!

Obviously you like to think it's coincidence, but it can't be! :p It's as if your eyes are now open to these things and your mind accommodates/identifies these new things more often.

Has this ever happened to you? If so what with? :spin2:

Yes, and it's true. I never really noticed before, but as soon as I fell pregnant with my son, all of a sudden there were pregnant women or women with new babies in prams EVERYWHERE. I think when it's something relevant to yourself you suddenly become far more aware of it.

Kate is that because you went to a cresh?

Lol, no Marc. Just walking around town, or even at the local shops. There suddenly seemed to be an epidemic of pregnant women everywhere. And there were programmes on the telly about related stuff, hormones, diet etc. It's crazy :D

Well vignette and bespoke aren't everyday words..you may have heard them before but not really 'registered' them..now..because you have...you're noticing them for the first time.
The same with the car..if you haven't got a certain type of car and it isn't in any way 'striking'..you wouldn't notice it...but now you do
...no dark magic forces at work here Marc..but....LOL

I can't open the link Livia..my *cough* therapist...explained about the links in the mind and how you don't think you 'notice' things until they become familiar...and more prominent in your thoughts
...like in Kate's case...obviously, being pregnant she was thinking 'babies'...so suddenly they were popping up everywhere...but they'd always been there
...sort of makes sense...to me anyway

I know exactly what you mean Marc :joker:

I think its because the word/item means something to you so that when its said/seen you are more aware of it.

Okay, okay... that IS what you said, smart arse.

Marc should wear a hat fashioned out of aluminium foil to stop this phenomenon happenning to him. One of us should suggest it to him and insist on a pic.

This isn't the same at all but not new-thread worthy..anyone heard of that phenomenon where people always happen to look at the clock at a specific time? I rememer seeing a facebook group with over a thousand members of people who always happen to look at a clock randomly at 11:11 or something. It's probably just a routine engrained into their head but the specific time everyone is a bit freaky

-is now going to keep hearing about the Baader-Meinhof complex-

But no I suppose it's just because everytime you notice something new, you'll recognise it elsewhere. I'm like that with music a lot of the time - I'll discover an artist I wasn't familiar with and then suddenly notice him/her/them in TV shows, films or adverts.

And i cant tell you how many times ive looked at my clock aka my mobile phone and the times been 9/11 :o

I had forgotten about this...and this is maybe the wrong thread..
When I was around 14/15 I used to visit an elderly lady who lived in my road..she would tell me great stories about when she was young and we spent lots of time together.
..one night..I had a dream about her..that she was asking me to come and see her..which she often did..but I had never dreamt about her before.
The next day I was told that she had died during the night...and her family, who were with her at the time, told my mum that she had been asking to see me....
I haven't thought about it for a long time....but it bothered me a lot at the time

..maybe..if you had of 'heard' it....at different times we all 'deaf' to certain things which are said because..maybe another part of the conversation..or something else has grabbed our attention for a second..or maybe you had never heard those words before..they're not everyday words

It just adds fuel to my theory that the world revolves around me, I don't mean that in a self centred way.

Things are there every day but remain in your subconscious I suppose. Sometimes things are brought to the front of your mind, as it were. You most probably had heard the word vignettes before, but because you were not aware of the meaning and passed it off, it did not really register. Once you took the time to learn it's definition, it made more sense, and therefore registered itself (if that makes sense...).

It's the way you decipher things to you and your situation too. Like as said previously about pregnancy. Same, as say for instance, someone close to you passes away. Suddenly everything on TV etc seems to be about death. The relation your mind puts to these things becomes more prevalent. It's always there but becomes more heightened. It's brought more into the forefront of your mind, so you make more relation to it than you normally would if you like.

I am sure my mind will be making a mental note from now on every time I hear the word vignettes after reading this. Will be interesting...
