smokers should get paid less
this is unfair and unjust,
its discrimination rewarding a addiction,
i would write the next line,
but i need a puff, this is sarcasm not a contradiction.
Mathew Wright has just discussed,
to my attention is now the issue,
and when all the time is added up,
5 weeks extra for someone who smokes leaves me needing a tissue.
this is double,
i only get 5 weeks not 10 to enjoy,
say if i had a sex addiction,
do you think i could expect my company for a prostitute to employ.
what about food,
just say a employee is obese,
would you keep giving them 5 mins,
every-time they wanted to feast.
what ever way you look at it,
wrong is smoking,
they are damaging themselves and people close,
and the environment is choking.
discipline the smokers,
improve your company and make it green,
because there is nothing positive,
and a drug is our mate nicotine.

Sorry Joe but I'm a smoker, i am entitled to an hours lunch break but instead i take a 20 min lunch break and three ten minutes cigarette breaks, it is actually also more convenient for my office and co - workers too . I don't see why I should get paid any less though as I'm still working the same hours as a non smoker...

So, you effectively take 10 minutes less break time.

Yeah, sometimes even less if the office is really busy...I rarely take a full hour in total though
But I just don't like the insinuation that just because I smoke, I am a skiver- I work really hard. Other people in my office who are non smokers pop out regularly to 'nip to the shops' or 'get a snack/coffee' as well as having their lunch breaks, they have more time off than me..

What I said wasn't meant to be against smokers lol It's just smokers get treated like leppers these days and it's annoying. They seem to like to use any little thing to pick at the supposed 'demon' smokers.

Well smokers die earlier so they won't get as much of their pension, so really they should get more while they're still alive.

The thing is...Im betting not all workers actually work their whole shift. I know from experience(and what I have been told also) that most office jobs consist of a fair few hours of sitting talking etc(looks at niamh :suspect: ). So whats the difference between going for a 5 min ciggie and sitting telling your co-worker the latest gossip for 5 mins or so?
The only time I can see this being a problem would be...for example..if you worked in a busy bar or a factory, where everyone else was constantly working hard, and you kept nipping out for a smoke. But thats unlikely to happen because you wouldnt be allowed to do that really if it was that busy.

Yeah I think this too, it's not as though all non-smokers are spending every second of the day furiously working

Who cares? One of the main problems with offices today, is that everyone spends too much time worrying what others are up to. I'm a non-smoker, but I don't give a **** if people need to pop out a few times a day for a ciggie.
Fortunately I work for myself these days, but the constant gossiping used to do my head in.

Yeah that's fair enough I suppose but I think you'll always get skivers, regardless of wether they are smokers or non smokers. Like Vicky said you'll get the office gossips who'll spend 15 minutes chatting at the water cooler etc. One guy I used to work with would spend up to an hour on the internet looking at Dr Who websites/ going on Facebook etc and he wasn't a smoker...

Yes, I'm sure I'd work much harder if it weren't for those pesky cigarettes :idc:

hi bollo - i am sure you do work hard and your company is very privileged to have you - but there are plenty of workers that are not this way inclined and on top of it they smoke which inturn means they are taking 5 extra weeks holiday, so maybe something needs to be done.
