View Full Version : Chat and Games post count
This isn't quite serious enough to be a Serious Debates thread  but thought it was an interesting one at any rate. Posts in C&G don't count. This is for a variety of reasons, primarily so that people can't use a game thread to spam their post count up - but what if we just had a games subforum where posts didn't count and the rest of C&G did? Just thought it would make for an interesting discussion because people often post wondering what their post count would be if C&G counted, and so much of the forum's activity takes place in that section.

I think it's probably because of the chat threads too Greg.

I'd have triple my post count if C&G counted as that's where I spend the majority of my time on Tibb. Been here 2 and a half years and still nowhere near 10k.

It's weird, because I think the TiBB BB4 posts count. I know the Mole ones do, and not sure about Elimination. If anything they're the most spammy
But then you've got threads like "random picture thread", the actual chat threads, and what not. I don't think they should count. But threads like Kate's "i went to the shop and bought ____" should... they require effort

I don't think the game posts should count
Aye, those kinda threads too Niamh. But for threads where somebody's linked a YouTube video or posted a thread with a poll - members always think to post them in C&G because they're not deemed serious but they're still contributing to the forum. Perhaps a sub forum of chat threads and games while the rest should maybe be directed into General Chat or something in future?

Nope, the only game which counts is The Mole I believe. It's been like that since Rory hosted it. I would rather that didn't change as my post count would go very far down.
But yeah, I have always wondered why C&G doesn't count. Even the chat threads. I mean if someone is spamming to bump up their post count then we will see it or somebody will report it and that person will be infracted/banned like is the case now with any other sub-forum.
Also, damn you Shaun and Zee for ruining my 22,222 post count with this thread. :bored:
Yeah I think the spam thing is a bit, idk, irrelevant nowadays. Well no, not irrelevant, but the definition has changed with time. Someone signing up just to advertise a link = spam; but a regular poster doing the same thing = informative. It's a bit mad to have this blanket ban on the same thing when, in reality, we act in a different way. Similarly I think the no post count in C&G was relevant back when it was put in place but not so much nowadays - it's the most active section of the forum, I believe, when BB isn't on, and perhaps it's even still the most active section (or at least, one of) when it is on. Seems mad that the rule is still there.

Even when I joined 2009 there wasn't any of those all gif threads of just ones with pictures and stuff. Just seemed to be random topics and that, as far as I can remember. So it's a bit different these days, although the gifs have died down a bit.
It is probably the most active section but most of the threads in there are spam imo, like omfg look at this amazing video with a youtube vid that most people dont give a crap about.

I would like to know what my actual post count would be though during my time on TiBB. It's a shame I will never know.
I also think with C&G posts not counting some members try to contribute more to other sections of the forum.
But then people do that in Music too, Josy, they'll post a video and maybe one person will respond going "song's alright" and the thread dies. So why not C&G?

I do not understand why anyone cares. It is a number of posts on a forum, surely the higher number means you have a sadder life? :conf2:

The thing that I don't understand is how the Websites forum is locked. It was supposedly to stop people advertising their own forums and blogs and stuff - but I regularly do that with mine in the music section, and it's spilled over into Chat and Games with people going LOOK AT THIS HILARIOUS WEBSITE WHERE YOU CAN PAINT CATS PINK or whatever.
I still don't think chat-threads should count though... they're more of a social networking purpose than a forum messaging one.

I think they should count to be honest, not actual games but the regular part of C&G itself. I post in there most often so my post count isn't really an accurate representation of my posts.

This is what I think too, they're too samey as they are now. I think C&G's should be a sub forum for General Chat where people with permission to run games / chat thread are only be able to make threads.
I think it's about representing what gets posted on the forum really. Someone who posts exclusively in Chat and Games with the odd post in other forums isn't going to have anywhere near as many posts as someone who only signed up to post about, idk, West Ham United football matches in the Sports forum. But who's the greater contributor? Somebody who signs up only to talk about one thing or somebody who signs up to talk about lots of things - you can argue it doesn't matter, but I think it does.

If you do an advanced search, limit the search to you only with the little name box, then limit it to posts, and make it search C&G only.
After thats done, multiply the amount of posts the search shows per page (mine was 25), by the amount of pages you have (mine was 400 and something) and that should give you a rough estimate.
My C&G posts are around 12,000. :joker:

You can make it search posts instead of threads.
Niall

I don't think its totally accurate anyway. It apparently found the same amount of results - 495 that is - for Scott and I. So its probably limited in the amount of posts it can dig up.

I would have 12,429 I think.
I think some peoples would be in the hundreds of thousands considering threads like the district can get hundreds of posts in only one day, I think my post count is high enough for the amount of time I've been here so would rather they didn't count tbh :p

22-03-2012, 05:29 PM
See I think all posts anywhere on the forum should count. I used to be in agreement with excluding Chat & Games posts, but now, the way I see it is just that the post count should represent the actual number of posts you've made on the forum, rather than select sections' posts.
I'm not all that bothered about post count anymore, but I like it as a little reminder about how many posts I've actually made on here, and I think that's what it should be about. I know there's all the problems with spam and whatnot, but really, so what? They're still posts, and you can still sit there in the knowledge knowing that by and large, the majority of posts you've made haven't been spam.
It's just numbers, really. I just think it'd be nice for it to actually represent the number of times you've posted on here.
Vicky.
22-03-2012, 05:31 PM
I'm all for getting rid of post counts altogether tbh. I just dont see the need for them and some people seem to treat others differently based on how many posts they have made (newbies especially)

What about the Random Music Video Thread in the music sub forum
That's sorta spam isn't it
But it still counts

22-03-2012, 05:44 PM
I don't like the idea of removing posts counts altogether. I like to have a sense of how long others have been posting on here for (join date doesn't really do that)/how invested they are with the forum. It's a way I identify posters by. Plus, I'm nosey.
I agree with the notion that having all C&G posts not count being silly, especially considering it's the main focus of the forum for most of the year. And off season posters are generally better contributors anyway. The Big Brother forum gets just as spam filled.

Exactly! For example that 'Johnny Depp is hosting BB13' thread.
I think we should decide what types of threads in C&G are worth excluding from Post Counts (game chat threads; the main chat threads) and those that aren't to try and legitimise this a bit more..
Samuel.

Yeah and they also count in General Chat
Samuel.
26-03-2012, 03:33 PM
Oh yeah, maybe I was thinking of General Chat. There's barely any difference between the three. Should merge them all, and then have a sub forum for chat/spam/game threads.
Perhaps we should do a reshuffle of boards. Seems like there's growing support for separating Serious Debates and News Stories which are often totally in contrast to each other, e.g. the thread about the elephant escaping or the fat pets being in the same forum as the Justice for Trayvon thread... Separate those; re-evaluate what Chat and Games is for and move certain threads to General Chat?
King Gizzard
29-03-2012, 11:25 AM
I only think the unmerge of them two needs to be looked at - If a news story turns into a debate it can easily be moved to serious debates, people have started posting news stories in general chat
atm I think the type of threads in chat and games are fine

You would still get that with a separate news forum though, you would have the fat pet thread in there with things like the thread about the Toulose gunman
Tbh I think the "serious debates and news" section should be renamed "serious topics" or something like that, and the more jokey stories go in general chat
