Ron Burgundy and his mustache traveled all the way from the 1970s to do three things tonight:

1.) Play some kick-ass jazz flute on TBS’s Conan.

2.) Tell Conan O’Brien he looks like he’s dying.

3.) Announce that his 2004 movie, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, is now getting a sequel.

Get more EW: Subscribe to the magazine for only 33¢ an issue!

Clad in his character’s signature wine-colored suit, Will Ferrell appears on tonight’s show and early footage has already leaked out. He made some crude sexual comparisons between his flute and his penis before praising O’Brien and sidekick Andy Richter for being “outstanding broadcasters.”

The pompous anchor of San Diego’s Action 4 News had only one criticism: “It’s probably only something a professional like me would notice, but Conan — you look awful.”

Burgundy insisted he was only giving the late-night host some tough love. “You look like someone put a bright red fright wig on a skeleton. And chucked it out of a helicopter,” Burgundy said. “I’m being kind right here.”

He offered O’Brien some words of advice: Fire his hair, make-up, and wardrobe people. “Just go under the knife, okay?” he suggested. “Go into your doctor’s office and point at your face and say, ‘Doc, it’s a page-one rewrite.’”

Almost as an afterthought, Burgundy got around to the point of his appearance:

“As of 0900 Mountain Time, Paramount Pictures and myself, Ronald Joseph Aaron Burgundy, have come to terms on a sequel to Anchorman,” he declared. “It is official! There will be a sequel to Anchorman. There will be a sequel.”

He then walked off, tootling his flute.

Will Steve Carell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, and David Koechner also be returning? Will more than eight years have elapsed in Ron Burgundy’s time-period, or is he still smack in the middle of the 1970s? When will this movie begin shooting or hit theaters?

Like any smart newsman, Burgundy didn’t stick around to answer questions.

Anchorman writer/director Adam Mackay has teased more plot details about the forthcoming sequel.

A second outing for Will Ferrell as 1970s newsreader Ron Burgundy was confirmed in recent weeks, with most of the original cast returning. And now Mackay has revealed that the film will see the unreconstructed Burgundy struggling to cope with progress.

He told Empire: "We know these guys never deal well with change, and the good thing is that there’s a big blast of change coming, according to the regular timeline. We're going to be throwing a lot of innovation at them, and they're not going to handle it well."

Mackay continued: "It's right when all the news started changing with the 24-hour news cycle in '78 or '79. All of a sudden, local news stations diversified and had Latino anchors and African-American anchors, and any time you’re talking about diversity and the Action News team, that’s always fun to deal with."

But fans will have to wait a while longer for the hyped sequel. On the progress of the script, Mackay added: "We've done about two per cent! Half a per cent? We’ve got five pages of story notes and chunks of story. We’re holing up writing for the next three months."

I think as long as it doesn't try to repeat too many of the first film's jokes, it should be good. Will Ferrell films usually are

I go back and forth on my opinion of Anchorman. It's a bit too left field for me to find laugh out loud funny, but I enjoy watching it. I think a sequel's a bad idea but I'll definitely go see it.

Producer Judd Apatow has insisted that Christina Applegate "will be back" for the upcoming Anchorman sequel.

Last month an Anchorman 2 teaser trailer was released in which Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner revived their roles from the original film.

Applegate also has a key role in the 2004 comedy as co-anchor and love interest Veronica Corningstone, but does not appear in the new trailer.

However, producer Apatow told E! News yesterday that "she will be back".

Last week Applegate admitted that she was keen to return, saying: "Of course I would love to be there. They know that. The world knows that. Why would I not want to?… They know that I want to be there, even if it's just a walk-on."

The script for Anchorman 2 is still being written by Apatow and Adam Mackay, the director of the original film. Mackay will also direct the sequel, with shooting expected to begin next year.

Applegate, 40, is currently starring in US sitcom Up All Night.

X-Men star James Marsden has joined the cast of Anchorman 2.

According to Deadline, Marsden will appear as a "rival anchor and nemesis to" Ron Burgundy, the 'tache-sporting character played by Will Ferrell.

Titled Anchorman: The Legend Continues, the newsroom sequel is due to begin shooting next month (March). Alongside Ferrell, original cast members Steve Carell, David Koechner, Paul Rudd and Christina Applegate have all signed on to reprise their roles, while Kristen Wiig has recently joined the cast too.

Released in 2004, the original Anchorman was a parody of a 70s TV newsroom written by Ferrell and director Adam McKay. The pair have also teamed up to write the sequel, which is slated for release on December 20.

Speaking last year, McKay revealed a few teasers about the sequel's plot, saying: "I don't want to give away too much, but I'll just give a couple of ideas that we've kicked around. Keep in mind we're still writing the story, but I'll say one phrase for you: custody battle. I'll give you that. I'll give you another one: bowling for dollars."

John C Reilly - pictured above with Will Ferrell - looks like the latest addition to Anchorman 2's swelling ensemble cast.

A casting call picked up by Bleeding Cool indicates that the production was scouting yesterday (February 28) for a Reilly lookalike, presumably to act as a stand-in for the actor.

The casting call reads: "Do you look like John C. Reilly? We’re seeking a caucasian male, 6’2″, any age. THIS SHOOTS TOMORROW, FEB 28th. Please submit your stats and 3 photos to TeachMan2ATL@gmail.com with the subject line JOHNNY DOUBLE."

The movie, Anchorman: The Legend Continues is due for release later this year and Kanye West was yesterday spotted on the set of the movie, prompting sources to suggest that the rapper will appear in a cameo role. Also filming scenes yesterday were 30 Rock actress Tina Fey and Parks and Recreation star Amy Poehler. E! suggests the all-star line up could be set to appear in a follow up to the famous fight scene from the first Anchorman movie. Sacha Baron Cohen has also been seen filming scenes for the movie, which will see the return of Will Ferrel as Ron Burgundy as well as Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate and Steve Carell.

Anchorman star Ron Burgundy, the alter-ego of comedian Will Ferrell, is to release an "autobiography" in November.

Let Me Off At The Top: My Classy Life and Other Musings promises to "tell all" about his rise to the top.

A statement issued on behalf Ron Burgundy said he was "too close to the work" to tell if it is "the greatest autobiography ever written".

"I will tell you this much: The first time I sat down and read this thing... I cried like a goddamn baby," he added.

"And you can take that to the bank."

The mustachioed TV newsreader was the star of the 2004 hit film Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

His "life story" will be published on 19 November, while a sequel to the film The Legend Continues, is due out on 20 December.

A press release from publishers Random House said the book would "offer a rare glimpse behind the camera into the real life of a man many consider to be our greatest living news anchor".

They promised "personal anecdotes about the women in his life, about his dog, Baxter, and his legendary news team" and said he would also "give sage advice on a variety of topics that matter most to him".

Last year, another fictional autobiography, of Steve Coogan's alter-ego Alan Partridge, sold more than 225,000 copies in the UK.
