Inspired by Kizzy expressing a desire to be a traffic warden in another thread.
Here you go Kizzy, your uniform

hhhmmm, Not many offbeat ones, one thing I'd love, is to be called for jury duty, don't know if that would be classed as off beat but I know most people try to get out of it if they are called

yes, that counts. Anything really you want to post that you'd like to do. I put offbeat as a pun on the Traffic Warden angle...
I got called for Jury Duty a few years back Niamh, but had a holiday booked so was excused. I would have loved to have done though, think it would be a very interesting experience.
Got Jury duty at the start of May you can happily take my place :idc:

Yeah as long as you got an interesting case though, not something boring

Depends what you get, could be run of the mill stuff, but could be something more thought provoking. My neighbour did it last summer and sat in on a rape trial. Obviously couldn't discuss it with anyone, but she said it was hard to listen to some of the stuff, it's a big responsibility.

They pick you off the electoral roll...not sure about dodgy people...you might not have to do it :)

If you get called you do (unless you have a good reason not to) I think it's just a random selection though so you might never be called or you might be called more than once
i tried to think of a good excuse to get out of it at first but then thought **** it may as well do it, the letter was in pink font as well the gayest thing ever

What makes you think I'm dodgy Kizzy?
at least i am doing it before the Euros or the Olympics are on otherwise i'd just not turn up and pay the £1000 fine
Kate!

you get your meals and everything and may even stay overnight in a hotel, and reasonable expenses paid as well I think.
 you get fined?!

would rather be out in the sun and not stuck in some sweaty court looking at pictures of someones mutilated body :idc:

There are potential perks though, when the neighbour I mentioned did her Jury service, the case lasted ages and they had to all be sequestered in a Liverpool hotel, she said the food was awesome and all paid for and the hotel was quite luxurious.
Being stuck in a courtroom in nice weather though, yeah wouldn't like that at all, that's the downside. Also I'd be anxious about reprisals if I had to help convict a rapist or murderer.

Oh if you say something controversial when they're doing the selecting like you think all criminals should be lined up and shot and you believe in guilty until proven innocent, they'll decide you're not suitable then :idc:

Don't be silly i want to be selected now after hearing about the hotel and food :idc:

I think forcing people to do jury service is ridiculous.
I'm not really bothered about doing it myself but it would be better if people had the option to put themselves forward for it, that way you'd have people who actually have the desire to it actually doing it rather then people who just won't take it seriously at all like myself
Niamh.
29-03-2012, 03:16 PM
You'd probably end up with a load of Norris/Mary types doing it then though
Kate!

Niamh had a good point when she mentioned people should be able to volunteer for it, it seems worthy of consideration really, rather than enforcing people whose hearts are not in it and implementing a £1000 fine. Unfair. It's not everyone's cup of tea. Surely it would be best to get people who really want to do it...although it would depend on their motivation as well
