I used to hate it when my mum smoked in the car with us in it, smells horrible and its a small confinded area for your kids to be in with the smoke, yes there are windows but there is still smoke going into your lungs

Most smokers I know are incredibly aware of other people and thoughtful of their feelings and comfort regarding smoking. Who would light up a cigarette anywhere near children?

I would hope that people know better than to smoke in the car with children anyway. I wont even smoke in the same room as kids, infact usually I go outside if the kids are here. As do most people I know

Kids really should buy their own anyway instead of getting free smoke in a car.

I completely agree with this, every word. Nowhere should anyone smoke around Children.

I don't smoke and never have, I socialise with smokers and it doesn't bother me in the slightest but around children anywhere should be a no go area definately.

My dad's old Ford Sierra used to smell of smoke a lot... I loved the smell. Probably gonna die in 3 weeks though. [/taking this seriously]

....I thought it was illegal to smoke in the car anyway....because it could be distracting..not under the smoking ban laws..the careless driving or undue care and attention ones

As much as I agree with not smoking in a car with children I dont agree with banning smoking whilst driving. That's just ridiculus.
No one should be able to dictate whether you smoke in your own car(child passengers being the exception)It isn't a distraction. Letting your mind wander off into conversation on a mobile phone is distracting.

Oddly enough, Shaun,I don't smoke and never will but I like the smell of cigarettes too,it doesn't bother me at all,I am around smokers a lot of the time, also when I do get farther North for a break to see relatives in Scotland, having a mate with me who smokes is brilliant for keeping midges away.

I would hope it was a very strong guideline, rather than a law not to smoke in your own car, it would surely overall be near chaos to police it and furthermore, a law would have some other interfering nosy drivers who maybe would do better to watch what they were doing, ringing up everytime they saw someone smoking in a car to get them into trouble.

I just cannot see how it could be policed by making it a law, if someone was a smoker, there would be obviously some trace of smoking in the car but how could you ever 100% police it to prove someone had actually smoked while a child was in the car.
Drivers would just make sure they smoked on country roads etc; unless of course they are going to have cctc absolutely everywhere at massive cost.

I don't agree with smoking around children but to actually make a law as to that for you and in your own car is a step too far.

You are also spot on with your distraction point too, friends of mine who smoke, when they are, I get better conversation and attention from them, however once fiddling with their phones, they are totally transfixed on that, oblivious to what's going on around them. Really good points you made.
