View Full Version : Bands/Artists that failed to live up to the hype.

Ben posted on my wall the other day asking for a song he remembered and it turned out to be the Klaxons' "Not Over Yet" cover... and I was just thinking how they turned out to be a bit of a flash in the pan... their second album, 'Surfing the Void' peaked at #10. It was pretty good though.
There's also said to be a curse about the Mercury Prize - which boosts sales a heck of a lot for a critically-acclaimed artist and then they never match it. This seems a bit unfair though since their fame was shortlived, if at all (Ms Dynamite, Speech Debelle, Badly Drawn Boy), they've continued to sell well (Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Dizzee Rascal) or they've continued to produce well-received material (PJ Harvey, Antony and the Johnsons, Klaxons, The xx (surely)).
Just wondered what springs to mind... I'm talking mostly here about critical hype, rather than... sales figures. A good example would be Little Boots, who won BBC's Sound of Music in 2009, beating GaGa, Florence, White Lies, La Roux, Empire of the Sun and Kid Cudi.

The Wombats. The Kooks. Both built up to be "the next best thing", but there was no longevity or consistency. I liked both groups too initially. Where did Kate Nash go btw? You never see her second album in stores? Duffy's album didn't do so great as I recall too and now she is on a musical hiatus.

Natasha Bedingfield and Daniel Bedingfield wasn't as big as I was expecting/hoping for them to be.
James Blunt is another one that didn't have much success after Your Beautiful.

Wasn't Justin Hawkins defeated in the heats for our Eurovision entry a few years back by Scooch? I think he proceeded to call the British public racist or stupid, and then faded into obscurity. Nice work Justin.

Yeah he was part of a duo with some black girl... he didn't even make the final two (some woman did, I can't remember her name, but Terry Wogan called her name instead of Scooch's... think it might have been Cyndi?)

Ladyhawke. I first saw her on the comedy show FM and then caught snatches of her songs at friends houses/ on the radio and thought she sounded promising....So I bought the album and was massively disappointed..she's ok as quiet background noise but the music doesn't hold up to a proper listen, just a bit blah really

Her husband died. It was really sad, and she wrote an album about it that came out either last year or the year before... it was really well-received, and I think got Mercury-nominated, and it did get to #5 in the UK

I agree with you (to an extent). As much as I love BTW, it was nowhere near as good as TF/TFM. It was too disjointed and some songs were just completely random. The Fame was cohesive at least.
I'm just hoping her next album will be as good as her first or better.

Who You Are - half amazing, half naff, worth it for the quality stuff shes recorded. And shes picked fantastic choices of singles, bar perhaps LaserLight.

I agree. I love listening to depressing songs sometimes, helps me write things in a depressed manner. I do wish people would learn to have broader music standards. There is generally some great and bad music from all genres.

Yeah, they only had one #1 single (The Drugs Don't Work), and that was only for one week.
They were indie darlings until 1997 when they were welcomed into the mainstream. They are most probably best well known for The Drugs Don't Work, Bitter Sweet Symphony (got to no. 2) and Lucky Man. They split in 1999 for 8 years, when Mr Ashcroft went solo, and the one and only album they have released since reforming achieved no. 1 status. Love Is Noise was a really good single from the album and actually reached no. 4 in the UK chart. I think they could have gone onto better things had they not split.
