On a recent flight to New York, I was delighted when a stewardess came over and gave me a bottle of champagne.

‘This is from the captain — he wants to welcome you on board and hopes you have a great flight today,’ she explained.

You’re probably thinking ‘what a lovely surprise’. But while it was lovely, it wasn’t a surprise. At least, not for me.

Throughout my adult life, I’ve regularly had bottles of bubbly or wine sent to my restaurant table by men I don’t know. Once, a well-dressed chap bought my train ticket when I was standing behind him in the queue, while there was another occasion when a charming gentleman paid my fare as I stepped out of a cab in Paris.

Another time, as I was walking through London’s Portobello Road market, I was tapped on the shoulder and presented with a beautiful bunch of flowers. Even bar tenders frequently shoo my credit card away when I try to settle my bill.

And whenever I’ve asked what I’ve done to deserve such treatment, the donors of these gifts have always said the same thing: my pleasing appearance and pretty smile made their day.

While I’m no Elle Macpherson, I’m tall, slim, blonde and, so I’m often told, a good-looking woman. I know how lucky I am. But there are downsides to being pretty — the main one being that other women hate me for no other reason than my lovely looks.

If you’re a woman reading this, I’d hazard that you’ve already formed your own opinion about me — and it won’t be very flattering. For while many doors have been opened (literally) as a result of my looks, just as many have been metaphorically slammed in my face — and usually by my own sex.

I’m not smug and I’m no flirt, yet over the years I’ve been dropped by countless friends who felt threatened if I was merely in the presence of their other halves. If their partners dared to actually talk to me, a sudden chill would descend on the room.

I think she might have had a more balanced reaction to her article if she'd supplied examples of when being beautiful has had serious drawbacks. I feel sorry for her though, I think the reaction's been over the top. I imagine she's the sort of woman who just has a sexual aura about her that causes people to get protective, be suspicious or feel threatened - and it's not always stunningly beautiful women who have that aura. I think that perhaps the confidence boosts of getting such treatment from strangers heightens such tensions, because it's sometimes intimidating to be around a sexual, confident woman. Nonetheless, she's probably feeling pretty ****ty about getting such hate from what's essentially a trivial issue that she wrote for the Daily Mail. Plenty of people write worse things for it and other publications.

I'm sure there are times when you've taken a thorough dislike to someone and they have just got under your skin and 'got to you'. It's what separates us from the animals, having such emotions - and anyone who says they like everyone isn't being honest.

What is clear to see from comments made from people, is that it is her breathtaking arrogance that is rankling people - no one likes such arrogance, moreso when it clearly comes from her own deluded self belief that she is something she is very clearly not.

You ask who she is harming. Well if any of her tales are true: she's certainly very publically made it clear what she thinks of the company that she and her husband keep - and I for one wouldn't appreciate someone that I kept company with, who I socialised with, doing that in a nationwide newspaper.

As you said Ammi - it is a discussion forum, so it's no real surprise it's been discussed 'on here' which you're doing yourself.

How do you know her arrogance and her comments about how she is treated (allegedly) by other women that she mixes with, at work/play/ social situation - do not affect them. :conf: I'd say it was a natural thing to be affected in some way if someone you socialised with suddenly began slagging you off in a newspaper.

I still think it's been a superb ploy all the same - and it's certainly generated a lot of interest by a lot of people. Well done the DM - it upped it's readership for sure given the interest, even by those who don't really care about it.

I don't really think the backlash comes out of jealousy of her looks or anything like that, I think it's that people don't like seeing someone be overly confident, or perhaps just honest in a way that isn't humble, about themselves. ..I agree..the Shannon twins were very unpopular in CBB..and I would guess that was mostly with females..they were confident of their looks..which imo they had every justification to be..but that confidence was percieved as 'arrogant'..and I think people prefer to see others humble about themselves.

..'pretty'..'beautiful' is subjective we all have different ideas of what we find attractive..but 'sex appeal' is more apparent and you don't have to be beautiful to have that. Sam isn't the most beautiful woman in the world imo..but I'm guessing she has sex appeal..and perhaps some..not all..feel 'threatened' by that
