View Full Version : Tobacco Ban sees supermarkets remove cigarettes from view
A ban on tobacco promotion comes into force on Friday in a bid to cut down on the number of people smoking.
The new legislation means all large shops and supermarkets in England must cover up cigarettes and hide tobacco products from public view.
The Department of Health said the move was in response to evidence that cigarette displays in shops can encourage young people to take up the habit.
More than 300,000 children under 16 try smoking each year and 5% of children aged 11 to 15 are regular smokers, according to its figures.
Meanwhile 39% of smokers say that they were smoking regularly before the age of 16.
Health Minister Anne Milton said: "We cannot ignore the fact that young people are recruited into smoking by colourful, eye-catching, cigarette displays.
"Most adult smokers started smoking as teenagers and we need to stop this trend.
"Banning displays of cigarettes and tobacco will help young people resist the pressure to start smoking and help the thousands of adults in England who are currently trying to quit."
Under the new rules all tobacco products must be kept out of sight except when staff are serving customers or carrying out other day-to-day tasks such as restocking.
Those found not complying with the law could be fined up to £5,000 or face imprisonment.
The ban on displays will roll out to smaller shops and businesses in three years time while the government is also consulting on introducing plain packaging for packets of cigarettes and other tobacco products.
BIB...I'm not convinced that has any bearing at all on what attracts people to smoke

LOL Arista..I know how you feel about smoking..but I'm not convinced the 'colourful eyecatching displays' have any bearing at all in 'enticing' people to smoke..I don't think they even are 'eyecatching' at all..and children are educated about the dangers of smoking from primary school age..if they decide to discard the warnings and smoke anyway..I don't think the lack of displays will be a factor

Theres a complete ban here on showing them in any shops.....makes the machines more prominent though because theres just a big white machine behind a counter.....

..where are you..ROI?..and that's what concerns me..the 'forbidden' element may actually make it more inviting to the young new smoker..for the ones already hooked..I don't think this move will make any difference

Yeah..smokers..hardened smokers won't be deterred at all..and if we're saying that young people are going to ignore all the many other warnings and try smoking anyway..imo the 'machine' is only going to entice them far more than any colourful packaging would..I don't know..it seems to me in the quest to discourage smoking in young people..they're in danger of doing the exact opposite

I have never seen anything more ridicuous as to this regulation to shops and stores, your attention is immediately drawn to the fact they have these sliding doors in place, this regulation is going to likely create the effect if it's wrong to be displaying them and selling them then younger people may want them.
However, the ASDA store where I am, also has hidden smoking related items like lighters etc, which is even more bonkers.
I have rarely seen queues like I have over recent weeks at the cigarette counters there, furthermore since cigarettes went up in the budget, people seem to be buying packs of 100s or 200s to save a bit of the rise in price.
Incredible that smokers are being inconvenienced for this daft Govt ruling, but alcohol in Stores is just about poured down your throat, with displays all over from entering the store and even displays at the top of the confectionery aisles too.
Alcohol can do as much if not worse harm to the body as cigarettes, yet children see adults piling alcohol into trollies juslt like its general shopping.
Total hypocrisy from a far more interfering Govt than the last one even was now. I don't smoke, never have, never will, I however think this is pathetic.
Should people stop smoking or cut down bigtime then the Govt would be in panic at the lost massive income it gets from cigarettes and tobacco.
Watching the staff having to slide these panels backwards and forwards with a queue of something like 20+ people waiting to be served is something I wouldn't expect to see in Stores supposedly open for business.
Bonkers, is the only appropriate word for this ruling by this now fast becoming totally incompetent/too interfering coalition Govt.

Yeah, I do wonder sometimes who comes up with these ideas.....'let's pretend nobody smokes' is basically what they're trying to do here.

..a very good post Joey..it's a silly idea to think it would act as a discouragement..and it's true about the alcohol too

I don't see it as a bad thing.
But I don't think it'll ever stop people smoking or starting to smoke  they don't start smoking because it's on display to them!

:joker: I cannot claim credit for the bonkers use Ammi, I wnated a lighter and had to queue for ages to get one, in front of me was a Woman who was going to buy cigarettes, she was 87, fitter than a lot of people I have seen who don't smoke and she had smoked since she was 15 she said.
When she got to the counter after getting her cigarettes all she said to the assistant was this is completely bonkers.

Exactly!
Kids do what they arent meant to...it happens. The more they arent meant to do it, the more they will want to. This wont change anything for the better. If anything more kids will smoke IMO
Also wondering how long before they ban displays of alcohol, as surely this is as much of a problem as child smokers ;)

Arista its really not. If it was I would fully support this as (although I smoke) it would be fantastic to see a decrease in the number of young smokers
But teens will be teens, and the more taboo something is, the more they want to do it.
Think about it...take drinking. In greece (I can only use this as an example because I lived there and noticed this) the legal drinking limit is 14. Yet in the 6 months I was there...working in a bar...I never once saw a 14 year old drunk. They came in occasionally for a half or two but thats it. Compare this to our limit of 18 which sees kids as young as 11/12 downing litres of cider on street corners because they arent 'allowed' to...
Ya I know this, but I dont see why shop workers need any extra stress on top of what they already get

arista, you know by and large I agree with you on most things, this is one I don't.
If any Govt had the courage to dare to make selling cigarettes illegal then their hypocrisy as to this would then be gone for the most part.
However, smoking, drinking etc are legal acts in the UK and the Govt should excuse the pun butt out and let people smoke if they want to and not to if they don't,
A legal product on sale in the UK should not be hidden from those who wish to purchase it, that is interference in private business on a scale even the last nanny Govt ,Labour, didn't reach.
Indeed the covering up of the displays, with the panelling most have put up now in fact only draws your attention more to what it is covering up.
This is in my view a stupid ruling by this Govt, one of a good few rulings already done and still growing.

If the Government were REALLY that concerned - they'd make smoking tobacco illegal.
All they are doing is paying lip service to it all.
They make far too many billions of £s on the tax and vat on cigarettes and tobacco to every want to put their 'money' where their mouths are..... and ban it.
They won't as it generates far too much revenue, so in the meantime: they play these silly pretences of implying that they want people to stop smoking or reduce the numbers: to use the pun ''it's nothing but a smokescreen'.

Vicky - is mum aware of the new rules that came into force 1st October? Just tell her to be aware - it's a very badly worded ruling which basically is worded to put the frighteners on travellers - a few of my friends bottled it but as long as it can be justified as own use - no issue - but if she's unaware - might be worthwhile ensuring she's in the know - I love the wording
"Although there are no limits on the amount of alcohol and tobacco you can bring in from EU countries, customs officials are more likely to ask you questions if you have more than the following:"

I don't know anyone who smokes because of the so called "colourful packaging" that statement is just ridiculous!
I cant see it making much difference, i can actually see it encouraging young people to smoke, when you are a teen alot is about defiance and now these forbidden hidden behind the doors cigarettes are going to be desired.
For example since i was young alcohol has always been around in small quantities as just a drink, a little bit of shandy or a sip of grandads beer was normal so for me alcohol has never been this massive thing and its there but you don't go silly, those that get hold of it who haven't had much to do with it and see it as a big deal and rebelling against parents go crazy and end up paraletic.
I can only see young people have more desire to get to what is behind the doors rather than just being oblivious, lets face it everyone knows about smoking.

She would also probably say something about only being able to afford to go away once every 3 years or something (lies but they dont know that) to justify her huge haul. She doesnt get nervous around authority, like me :D
When me gav and his dad went to turkey, his dad brought back a lot more than we were meant to (you are only allowed 200 per person OR tobacco I think it is, he had about 4000 + loads of baccy) and he proper choked at the airport. They didnt search us but they asked how many ciggies he had. He went bright red and started stuttering so I said we had 200 each. They then asked about baccy to which I replied that the baccy out there was crap and snide, why would we want to smoke any of that crap...and I actually want a cig now after the 3+ hour journey so can they please leave me alone. That InOne is a very strong and totally valid point, no one should be made to feel an outcast or that they are doing anything wrong when all they are doing is participating in something that is legal and also that they have had to pay for it too.

You know, my mum said a few months back...and I laughed at the time but it seems to be very true, that its more socially acceptable to snort a line of coke than it is to light a cigarette up.
She actually said this during a meeting at work about smoking (she works for the NHS  ) and the majority of people there..or so she said, after getting over how she dared say that infront of the bosses, agreed with her. And she has a point IMO.

Are there any parents (who don't smoke) who have a view on this?
Yes me, my 'angels' emotionally blackmailed me into stopping ....
So I told them if they ever start I will start again too and make damn sure it kills me....Fear is healthy

Smoking is not an advertising problem, it's a societal problem. There are lots of things I've grown up seeing on supermarket shelves that I've never felt the inclination to try.

I think I might move to one of the countries in Europe that just ignored the smoking ban :bored: They're chilling in a nice pub or cafe with a cig and we're made to feel like we're buying crack from the co-op
that's the bit that pisses me off big time. Smokers have been harrassed for years now - most of where we smoke is so restricted that enough is enough. If you don't like my fag smoke - then walk away - no one is tying or has superglued your feet to that spot if the wind is blowing it in your direction.

Hello! :) ... As an ex smoker I am for the ban, it was harder trying to quit when they seemed to be everywhere! haha. In the queue at the lottery terminal they mock you ...hide them I say.
*lights up fag and casually blows smoke in Kizzy's direction*
good for you on giving up - I should for health reasons but ach....... it's one of my few vices.
Perhaps I'll try prostitution when the fags have completely knacked my lungs and it's all I can do to lay down............ see - always have a back up plan ! :D

That's like riding a motorbike on the pavement and telling pedestrians they can get out of the way if they don't want to be run over.

Well, not being on display doesn't seem to have decreased the uptake of other drugs. I've never see cocaine or heroin on display, or a prettily packaged bag of weed... and yet people still get into it.

Alcohol will need hiding too at this rate, although that will not stop the determined alcoholics because they will just go round to the pub or get booze off someone they know...

Riding a motorbike on pavements is illegal.
Smoking outside is not.
I'd have thought that was more than obvious......

Absolutely. And part of the attraction is that little edge in knowing your doing something you really shouldn't be doing when rolling a spliff....... it add to the allure, to the fun of it all.
It's a fabulous move on the government's part - it's going to make it seem all so surrepticious, something bad to be doing - so bad that it's cool ..... and all the while, they rake in the tax and revenue. Not so daft our politicians....not so daft at all. ;)

It may or may not work, I dont buy into the conspiracy theory side of it, maybe the thinking is 'out of sight out of mind?'
It will as I said really help those who have stopped not to be tempted, as I don't think the urge ever really goes away....Not compleatly, as you can associate smoking with good times.

I am also a none smoker and would love to see the end of people being ridiculous by impersonating a walking chimny pot and potentially slowly killing themselves and others.
However I agree governments of all shades not just this mad coalition mob aproach to smoking is as you say "bonkers" and hypocritical.
Hiding them behind closed doors and then having in huge letters the name of the product behind those closed doors is hardly hiding them from view. bonkers bonkers and bonkers again. Can't say it too many times.
If smoking is so dangerous (and it is) (yet its legal) Then the product as a whole should be banned from being sold and manufactured.......Addicts should get it on prescription only while being treated for the addiction.
Its claimed the government would lose out on tax revenue. Yea but look what they would save on the health service and people would still spend their mony on other taxable items along with more money being used to buy goods and encourage growth instead of money being burned on smoking cancer sticks.
As a nation I think we would be better off if smoking was no more in many more ways than one.
Same with drug takers sqandering money on false personality creating chemistry and in turn supporting terrorists and criminals in their evil activities.....

It wont stop anything, let people smoke if they want to, like drink.
I've still seen cigarettes on show in the last few shops I've been in, what's actually the exact details for this ban?
-has not read thread-

..I thought it was meant to come into effect last Friday..but maybe they allow a certain amount of time for the changeover

Oh I noticed this the other day, I just went to Tesco late so I assumed they were closing up
It does seem to nullify the amount of daftly exaggerated health warnings they put on the packet :conf2: Hiding them completely is just going to heighten the taboo about them, and if there's one thing teens love doing it's shattering taboos
