The 158th Boat Race had to be halted midway through because of a swimmer in the River Thames.

The Oxford and Cambridge boats were side by side after eight minutes when the sight of a man in the river ahead of them forced them to stop.

It was decided the two boats would return to Chiswick Bridge to restart from a straight section of river.

I wonder if he was actually committing a crime, i.e. deliberately causing an obstruction, or just got in the way ..... :conf:

Cambridge went on to win with ease after Oxford broke an oar in a clash moments after the resumption.

Apparently the "swimmer" is associated to thisisnotagateway (http://www.thisisnotagateway.net/) and was protesting against elitism.

Yes The Punk was against Elite People.

As a Result
the race stopped and due to the Rushed ReStart
one team got Extra Lucky.

Next Year
they must Fence it Off
and if a Punk jumps in
pull him out and Taser him.

I don't get how it works, does the competition get legal rights over the whole stretch of the race.

"BRCL [Boat Race Company Limited] can confirm that Alex Woods is in a stable condition. He will continue to be monitored by hospital staff.

At this time, BRCL's concern is for Alex's well-being.

The swimmer was picked up by a police boat and later arrested on suspicion of a public order offence.

Mrluvaluva

Although I don't think it's actually illegal to swim in The Thames, I think it is frowned upon by the river police who patrol it, and I would suspect you would be picked up by them mainly for your own safety. I don't think I have ever seen anybody swimming in it.
