Tbf I don't think those two played bad today, it was the rest around them that was awful.

I've seen Bale perform brilliantly but never seen anything from Modric.

Both are brilliant. Modric is one of the best playmakers in the world. He wasnt great today but he wasnt bad. He cant be bad if Man Utd and Chelsea have made serious - 20 milllion plus - offers for him. Bale is a bit more one dimensional but still in a different league to most of the left sided midfielders in the Premiership.
