'Report children' plea over Wigan McDonald's disturbance

Mobile phone footage of the incident has been posted online and watched by about 65,000 people
Parents in Greater Manchester have been urged to report their children to police if they were involved in a fracas at a fast food restaurant.

The disturbance at McDonald's in Standishgate, Wigan on 10 April saw youths abuse staff and steal food.

A film of it has appeared on a video sharing site. Wigan council's chief executive has said parents must report their child if they were involved.

Donna Hall said many of those in the clip can be "clearly identified".

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said the force were proceeding with a "thorough investigation" of the incident and detectives were reviewing the YouTube video, which has been watched by around 65,000 users.

In the film, around 100 youths chant sexist abuse at staff and climb over the restaurant's counter.

The police said others had stolen food, thrown rubbish and acted in a manner that was "wholly unacceptable".

Ms Hall said she was "encouraging parents to have a look at that clip and see if they recognise their children".

"Obviously, if your youngster was out in Wigan that evening - and you can clearly recognise many of the faces on this clip - please report it," she said.

'Completely unacceptable'
A spokeswoman for the fast food chain said the company had been "appalled by the deplorable behaviour displayed in our Standishgate restaurant".

"The safety and security of our employees is of paramount importance and it is completely unacceptable for them to be the targets of any level of intimidation or abuse," she said.

"Fortunately nobody was injured, but we are offering our full support to those staff members affected by the shock of the incident. We are also cooperating fully with the police."

Sgt Nicola Williams said that those involved had "behaved in a wholly unacceptable way"

"The staff were subjected to abuse of an indecent nature and were terrified," she said.

"We have launched an investigation to identify those responsible and bring them to justice."
