I like all threads really and post on them all at times, however I am a rather serious sort of guy so I guess I look at the serious debate threads more than others, mainly because I am into and have a great interest in politics and law so they are pretty serious topics anyway.

Serious debates for me something we can get our teeth into, also like TV threads and threads where we find out about members.

03-05-2012, 09:30 AM
we all pick and choose what threads we post in and to some degree who is posting in it makes a difference if we post in it

serious debates are no different to chat and games beacuse they are things that have happened or will happen regardless of weather we agree with them or not

its just another thread to voice your opinion and listen someone elses.

Jedward fever's threads

Actually you made a good point there, there are a lot of members who when I see a thread made by them,I go to them right away to read them and JF is for sure a main one of those for me, you never know when it's going to be a really serious issue or some great thread that will have you really cheered up from him. Redway too has really created some great threads as well.

Despite my threads, I'm not usually a fan of them, I only really make them to try and get stuff going on TiBB. My favourite threads are usually the music ones, as I spend about 95% of my life listening to music, even when I'm sleeping. I don't mind serious debates, but I try and avoid them now as I've been shouted down so many times for my opinion because I'm a mod and I've given up trying to deal with that.

I dont see how thats a great idea tbh, no offense to kate (or to anyone who thinks it is)

I mean, if you can think of topics for debates...make a thread in serious debates about it. Its the same thing and its easier for other people to find (for example someone might not want to read through 20 pages of other stuff to find out what this weeks debate is...someone who would have interesting posts in a certain debate might not even know its going on...etc etc)

It was said in that thread too that anyone could join in whenever they wish...so the bold bit wouldnt happen either.

That said though, noone ever said it wouldnt be able to go ahead, and just because I dont like the idea doesnt mean it wouldnt work.

It was more like everyone who said they wanted to take part gets put on the list, and then those in the list get on with the debate kinda thing. Sort of like a book club thing :joker: Nobody would be excluded because everyone had the option to say if they wanted to take part or not.

There was no club...I was just interested, and I was a new member josy.
Like I said it was kates idea im sure she will be able to clarify when she comes on.

Ok then Kizzy it wasnt a club it was a debate society, regardless of the title though it still came across as being exclusive to a certain bunch of members IMO and 1 new member doesnt speak for every new member that joins the forum.

Who were this bunch, Was it the ones who are interested in serious debates?
I can't see how it would put any new member off tbh as there was no exclusivity from what I remember....Anyhoo its a hypothetical as it never happened anyway.

You said yourself kizzy it would be a group where "members had to request to join to debate", does that not suggest a certain level of exclusivity? Nobody should have to request to offer their 2 cents in a debate, they should just be free to do so as they wish

I think Kate's intention was more like a small group, similar to a book group, who hold a daily debate on a subject of somebody in the groups choosing. That's how I saw it anyway.

Just read through this, plenty valid comments, not gonna bore by quoting loads however, this one is the closest to how I envisioned it and the list was for people who specifically wanted to choose topics, although everyone could join in the debates. I shelved it because I was concerned that it would just become a free for all, nobody said we couldn't do it,.quite the opposite, I just didn't feel confident enough as the organiser. I'm better at the lighthearted stuff, but feel free to revive it anyone. The other stipulation I think I pistedbat the time was that topics shouldnt be too contentious. First offering was going to be should school uniform be abolished?

Basically it was Pyramid who hijacked the thread and casued a massive fuss. That's why it didnt happen.

typical of you to go targetting one person - and leave out the valid points that I made..... which btw: others happen to NOW agree with.

I actually think pyramid made some good points.

I didnt read it at the time but just read through it all now, and all she was wanting to know was why there was any need for a list when apparently everyone was welcome to post in there :S

I think it was more the way she put it across.

Well she put it across fine to begin with before people jumped down her throat D:

Thank you for that Vicky. That was what happened.

Yes it does get annoying when that happens.

Worse when it is turned around against one person though: even though more than that one person shared the same view but only one person gets jumped on .

She asked too many silly questions if I remember right :idc:

Nothing wrong with getting a bit of clarification :pipe:

And she got it :pipe:

Again: typical response from you..... wholly unconstructive.

I don't like the idea of debates being exclusive and people needing to request to join in, it's better to have separate threads for anyone to add to as they feel like as well I think. If someone starts posting rubbish then that's our job to sort out

I agree with you. Threads should be for everyone.

I agree MTVN. I have no issue at all with Kate, but since this has been brought up in her absence... as a member of this forum I don't want to have to apply to another FM for permission to post in a debates thread.

Nice to see that others agree with what I had said in that particular thread of Kates at the time.

..I don't understand how an organised debate would be any different to the usual debates...anyone can give an opinion on them anyway

..yes I understand that..but if anyone wanted to join the debate they would..so I can't see it being any different from the existing debates

It was different because Kate wanted fms to have to 'register their desire to be part of the debate'. That's why it was different.

Where the idea that it is going to be in some way restricted has come from I don't know...

It came from a thread that was around prior (I think?) to you joining.

It was more like everyone who said they wanted to take part gets put on the list, and then those in the list get on with the debate kinda thing. Sort of like a book club thing :joker: Nobody would be excluded because everyone had the option to say if they wanted to take part or not.

It was, as far as I understood - to be decided by Kate (IIRC) whether x/y/z forum member was allowed to join - ie; whereby Michael21 was to be excluded.

Therefore it was a 'private club' so to speak - as long as you were 'allowed to join'.

So why the need for people to 'put their names down as wanting to take part in a debate'.

If people want to put up a post, they should be allowed to. The minute you mention ''other than that....'' ... there should be no ''other than that''.

I don't know if the thread is still around Kate, but I am sure that the main thrust of it was people had to state they wanted to take part in the debate .... that was the intial premise of your idea...... and it only became diluted into people taking turns to chose topics.

That's off the top of my head without checking back on it.

Dont get riled pyra :), It would be open to everone kate clarified that yesterday...She only suggested it wouldn't be micheals thing but there was no question of restricting anyone as far as I saw...
Also the idea was the thread topic would be available to view before the 'debate' started so anyone who wished to comment had the chance.

I'm not getting riled, honestly. Just that some people on here think they can talk about fms and to fms whatever way they like and not be held accountable for it.

I recall the idea wasn't clear at all, being quite muddied and I could of course be wrong: but far as I recall, the 'goalposts' kept moving as questions were being raised - that's where it all got a bit ''whats the point then''.
