Nelly Furtado has unveiled the artwork for her forthcoming album.

The singer will release The Spirit Indestructible as her fifth studio record on June 18 in the UK and a day later in the US.

The star unveiled two versions of the artwork - one for the standard edition and one for an expanded deluxe collection.

Furtado co-wrote every track on the album and worked with a variety of producers including Rodney Jerkins, Bob Rock and John Shanks.

"I began writing these songs around the time I released my Spanish album Mi Plan," Furtado explained. "I was in a great headspace, feeling refreshed and ready to really deliver in English again.

"This album is all about positivity, youth, good energy, and the relentlessness of the spirit. I want people to live this music the way we did when we wrote it.

"I want them to jump, dance, scream, laugh, cry, love and vibe to it, and to turn it up very loud everywhere."

Furtado proclaims that the overall sound of The Spirit Indestructible would be most similar to her debut album Whoa, Nelly! (2000), but containing elements from urban, alternative, and reggae. The influences for the album range from Janelle Monae, The xx, to Florence + the Machine.

For Nelly Furtado, the cost her six year long chart hiatus hit home upon the release of her new LP ‘The Spirit Indestructible’.

Leaving spectators dazed and confused with first week sales failing to hit 7,000 units sold figure, recent weeks have seen Furtado shy away from speaking on the project…until now.

Speaking to ‘The Huffington Post‘, she shared:

“I’ve had kind of everything happen to me commercially and at different levels. I’ve had different scenes and I’ve dabbled in a lot of markets so I see the music world as very global and I’m always looking for new avenues and opportunities, so one chart or anything doesn’t necessarily [mean anything.]“

Let’s hope Interscope feel the same way.

Though Furtado is and will always remain a breath of fresh air as far as sound goes, her numbers this time around are too low to warrant an explanation like the one above.

For, while sales around 80 to 100k might be forgiven or overlooked by a label, pulling in 6,000 or so copies may leave some wondering if the album was worth releasing at all- considering the fact it was purchased by next to no one.

The way we see it, the LP’s numbers came as a result of A. her lengthy absence from the scene and B. material that didn’t quick stick in the way she needed it to.

Here’s hoping her next LP delivers a more cohesive sound, and strays away from cuts like ‘Hoops’ and serves more akin to ‘Say It Right’, ‘Manos El Aire’ and the ever moving ‘Powerless‘.
