View Full Version : Do you think this is right?

Recently my parents got called into my little brothers school to discuss 'problems' with his GCSE work.
The alleged he had been 'bullying' his french teacher.
Now, anyone who knows my brother knows hes the perfect student. he is straight A in everything and prefers to do his homework than go out with his mates, very odd for a 15 year old really...but its good in the long run.
So they go in to see the head of year who shows them the problem. On a recent GCSE paper for french, one of the questions has been to 'give your opinion on your teachers'. My brother had praised the majority of the teachers, but said that his french teacher was quite 'unpleasant'.
Yeah, that was it. That was the problem they had been making such a big deal of. This is how my straight A 15 year old quiet brother had been BULLYING his teacher :laugh2:
My dad asked, quite rightly too, what they expect when asking that question. he said that was quite mild compared to what he would have wrote at 15 year old about his teachers and that if they do not want the children to be honest, the question should have been 'praise your teachers', not asking for opinions. 'Unpleasant' isnt even really an insult in my eyes tbh either...
Anyway, to cut a long story short, his french GCSE paper thing might be disallowed because of that one comment. However on being graded...yup, you guessed it, it was an A* like the rest of his work.
My dad says if they try to disallow it he will take it further, as its beyond ridiculous. What do you think?
Niamh.

I agree completely with your dad, if they don't want honest answers don't ask the question tbh. And that's what they're calling Bullying? Really? Surely the school is bullying your brother for not lying on his paper :pipe:
Kate!
14-05-2012, 03:18 PM
I think he was very polite and restrained tbh, using the term *unpleasant".
Also, if they try to disallow it, fight them all the way, it's utterly ridiculous. They'd make themselves look very petty and small minded, especially given his excellent record :bored:
Deary me!
Edit:Also reading Niamh's point ^ you could argue in fact that the school is victimizing your brother, as all he did was answer a question, an ill thought out question imo. They are lucky they didn't get pupils calling teachers much worse, maybe they did

Its ****ing pathetic in my opinion. If calling someone unpleasant is bullying, the majority of the kids would be excluded 99% of the time as they call each other MUCH worse than that

Sounds pretty pathetic to me. And it's cases like this that put the entire teaching profession (something which on the whole I think is under appreciated in this country) into disrepute. Sounds like they have some personal vendetta against him.
Odd though considering they'd surely want as much A* work as possible due to league tables etc? Perhaps his teacher is just a menopausal *****.
If it's a woman of course.

Absolutely pathetic, teachers need to have thick skins, I know in my school and probably in most schools I would imagine, it was a daily occurrence for teachers to get abuse from pupils but none of them called the bullying card. What an overreaction.

It is ridiculous. I have worked in a PRIMARY school as a classroom assistant and platground supervisor, and been called some horrible things, speccy bitch for example. These people need to get a grip.

I dont think its this because surely there would have been former incidents too if it was...
Just seems to be extreme pettyness out of nowhere. I would bet my left arm that some other pupils said MUCH worse when asked for their opinions.
The sad thing is, my brother has always had respect for his teachers and that (again...odd for a 15 year old  ) but now he thinks that they are just a joke. Well at least his french teacher, head of year and headteacher...and hes getting a kind of...bad boy image round his school now that everyone knows my parents had to go to a meeting about him, which I hope to god he doesnt play up to :(

Totally ridiculous and your Dad would be right to lodge an appeal against any downgrading. In fact he should make an appeal to a higher level for the inconvenience to him and your Mum,not to mention the distress caused to your Brother too.

The fact they tagged him with the 'bully' stigma for that mild comment is a joke :joker:
I doubt it will get disallowed, scare-tactics imo especially if its such a high standard paper. They couldnt do it.

Half of my French class said "I hated Spanish because my teacher was ****" in our controlled assessment and it just contributed to their marks. No one cared.

I don't see what's wrong with what your brother did, Vicky. He was asked to express his opinion on his teachers, and that's what he gave. We can't all get along with everyone. Seems the French teacher's some sad lowlife who obviously can't tolerate negative opinions on here. Sounds like a bellend, really. Just argue the case until you win your appeal, really. They'd be retarded pricks not to understand.

How is saying that someones unpleasant is bullying lol?
In Primary School I called one of my Teachers an annoying bitch yet didn't get classed as a bully for it.
Also proof Teachers are stupid aswell as they don't deal with actual bullying but stamp out something that isn't bullying but just your Brother's opinion.

What a pile of ****. They should not ask for comments if they don't like the results. "Unpleasant" is hardly a derogatory term, and they should not penalise him for being honest. I would take some advice on the matter to be honest, as it is outrageous that they could even consider disallowing his paper for that. As for constituting that remark as bullying? Absolutely pathetic.

If the french teacher is offended then they should look for a new line of work. What your brother stated in his paper wasn't even in an insult so if the teacher can't even handle that then how are they going to handle the inevitable bastards they'll come across in their profession?
If I was your dad I'd lay down the law and unleash hell upon them if they even thought of disallowing the paper. It's the kind of thing the media goes mad for and they wouldn't want to risk bad publicity.

Pathetic doesn't do enough justice to describe this. I'd have understood if the school wanted to know more about the 'teacher' to establish if the teacher was being problematic and perhaps picking on your brother (rather than the other way around) - rather than any accusation being cast towards your brother.
I'd have thought that should have been more the school's concern, especially with a diligent straight A student.
Apart from which: it shows the poor standard of quality of exam questions. Also begs the question how effective the Head of Dept is - if they aren't able to look at things from all angles, to try to establish if there was some issue , rather than just accuse your brother right off.
I'm with you and your dad on this one. Idiot of a French Teacher: even worse, idiot of a Head of Dept.

There was something similar on Russell Howards show about an American teacher where the teacher gave a student detention because the student corrected her when she said that a mile was longer than a kilometer, and she said that he deserved detention because even though he was right, he should not undermine her authority in the classroom.
Teachers like this are a disgrace.

This also reminds me of a story my mom used to tell me about how her teacher tried to make her learn to write right handed even though she was left handed, and my granddad went in and gave the teacher a good talking to over that. She was allowed to write left handed after that. She sounded so proud of her dad. I always loved hearing my mom talk about her days in school.
It's funny and cool thinking about yur parents when they were kids.

OK Im glad everyone seems to agree that its absolutely ****ing stupid. I thought maybe I was being a bit biased because its my brother
I havent heard anything else about this yet, so Im assuming the second meeting hasnt happened yet...hopefully they have the sense to just drop it now. Surely they can see they have no case whatsoever.
If they do try taking it further, I will pass on that email address to my dad though daniel, cheers for that :)

I hope they do..but I can't see it. These results are not going to affect anything, especially with the others being high and a B still being good.
He just wanted good enough results to do medical school. As his sciences and stuff are fine, this affects nothing so I cant see him pushing it :/

I know it's sort of "well he did great in everything else so I guess we can leave it", I'd probably feel the same way on some level... but if for no other reason - your brother has worked incredibly hard to be brilliant at everything he does at school and to be penalised for being honest in a respectful manner is the most ludicrous thing ever. The school are clearly closing rank around the teacher so if I were you, I'd go to your local MP rather than the exam board (which will side with the school) who actually has some clout. Going to the media will just drag your brother through the mud which might really upset him, even if everyone's supportive, I don't think he'd want the local area or even the nation knowing his name and what happened to him etc... but if you contact your local MP and go see him/her, perhaps they could take it to the exam board and get things sorted properly. Your brother put the work in and got the result, he did not get a B grade, so he should not have been given one.
Vicky.

Oh, yeah, probably the coursework - I was really confused for a minute because at our school our teachers weren't even allowed in the room when the exams were handed out, let alone look through our answers after we had finished.
That's still completely ridiculous though. In one of my French speaking assessments we had to talk about school, our teachers etc and we were actively encouraged to mention the positives and negatives to each one to show you are able to do that, so I said something along the lines of "I love my English teacher, he is very nice and kind to us but my Maths teacher is very nasty and strict." I got an B for it - though not because it was a terrible thing to say, just because i'm not very good at it. If I wrote it at A* standard like your brother then they would have given me one without any issue. And 'nasty' is harsher than 'unpleasant'!
If he wants to apply to medical school then he'll be competing against people with straight A*s across the board in both GCSE AND A Level. Would one B affect his chances? No, not really, but his application would obviously look better if he had his deserved A* grade instead. I wouldn't give up on trying to get it.
