There are dramatic developments unfolding at Anfield that could lead to Kenny Dalglish leaving Liverpool by the end of the day.
Dalglish, who guided Liverpool to Carling Cup glory but oversaw their FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea at Wembley this season, is in danger of being shown the door by the club's Fenway Sports Group owners, just two days after holding a showdown summit with main men John W Henry and Tom Werner.
Dalglish arrived back in Merseyside on Wednesday but is due to leave the UK again to go on holiday with his wife.
The Reds finished in eighth place in the league - four points below rivals Everton and level with ninth-placed Fulham on goal difference - in a woeful season that saw them lose four league games at Anfield.
The 61-year-old only returned to the Liverpool hot-seat in January 2011 after replacing axed boss Roy Hodgson.
Dalglish, who has won nine league titles, three European Cup trophies, three FA Cups and five League Cup triumphs during his combined 15 years of service as a player and manager at Liverpool, could become the latest in a series of high-profile departures, following director of football Damien Comolli and communications chief Ian Cotton out of the exit door.
Former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas, Wigan's Roberto Martinez and former boss Rafa Benitez are all in the running to succeed Dalglish in charge of the club should he leave.

"It has been an honour and a privilege to have had the chance to come back to Liverpool Football Club as Manager. I greatly appreciate the work that Steve, Kevin, the players and all of the staff put in during my time and feel proud that we delivered the Club's first trophy in six years winning the Carling Cup and came close to a second trophy in the FA Cup Final. Of course I am disappointed with results in the league, but I would not have swapped the Carling Cup win for anything as I know how much it meant to our fans and the Club to be back winning trophies.
"Whilst I am obviously disappointed to be leaving the football club, I can say that the matter has been handled by the owners and all concerned in an honourable, respectful and dignified way and reflects on the quality of the people involved and their continued desire to move the football club forward in the same way as when they arrived here.
"I would like to thank all of the staff at the Club for their effort and loyalty. I said when first approached about coming back as Manager that I would always be of help if I can at any time and that offer remains the same.
"Finally, I want to put on record my heartfelt gratitude to Liverpool's fans, who have always given me and the Club their unwavering support. Without them neither the Club nor I would have achieved anything."

PR image is important for a Football club because they have business deals off the pitch and that incident will have put doubts in some sponsors minds whether it is best to continue an association with a club?
Anyway Liverpool will have to rebuild for next season because all the teams that finished in the top 4 this season will surely get stronger for next season by adding new players and with Newcastle doing well this season too, well it makes things tougher.

KD coming back was part of Liverpool trying to get the feel good factor back, being out of management that long he struggled to adapt to the modern game and how you have to change your management style cope with the demands.. where as Ferguson and Wenger have successfuly managed to do this!
Credit to Kenny for getting you to two cup finals and winning a trophy though.
Samuel.
17-05-2012, 06:09 PM
I don't think he struggled to adapt. He's been out of management for a while, he needed time. And we were ridiculously unlucky for most of the season, we should have scored twice the amount we did. It was his tactics that got us in goal scoring opportunities, it's just more often than not they were wasted. And the summer signings were abysmal, but I don't know who's actually to blame for that. Nothing to do with him struggling to adapt.
Ferguson and Wenger haven't been out of management for over 10 years. Not really a comparison you can make.

Ferguson and Wenger are not a comparision as such, although I mentioned them because they are old school Managers who have had to change their management style to adapt to the modern era of Football both on and off the pitch as the game evolves.
Liverpool's knack of not being clinical on goal this season might have contributed to your finish or the performances were not good enough and everyone questioning your Summer signings?

Rafa Benitez has been approached by Liverpool as their search for a new boss took another twist.
After being snubbed by Swansea’s Brendan Rodgers on Friday, Liverpool have continued their hunt for Kenny Dalglish’s successor by speaking to their former manager.
The Spaniard left Anfield in 2010 before Fenway Sports Group bought Liverpool and they are impressed by his CV.
Benitez has been itching to return since quitting Inter Milan 18 months ago and has long hoped to take over from Dalglish.
He feels he has unfinished business, because of the way his six-year reign ended unhappily in June 2010 after Liverpool finished seventh in the Premier League.
The Champions League-winning boss has been plotting a return from his home on the Wirral and has kept in touch with Kop fans groups, who would welcome him back.
But it is unclear how serious FSG are about Benitez, because they have identified so many candidates and already have permission to speak to Wigan boss Roberto Martinez.
Benitez, 52, may also have reservations about having to work with a director of football as he had established total control on the playing side by the time he left Anfield.

He's nailed on to get the job. An absolutely appalling appointment based on the fact that he's young, and not a lot else.
It should be Rafa. But how FSG can look at the candidates available, and think someone who's team plays for about 3 weeks each season, is the man to take us forward is astounding.
I'll be amazed if he's in a job by next summer.

Not enough time for a project like Liverpool, they need more instant success, I actually think if we were to offer him the job as well, he'd take us over them. We'd be prepared to give him a couple of years (I think) to build his own team and get playing some good football
Think Liverpool need more of a name really.

Liverpool have decided to go for a young and upcoming Manager by the looks of it, although if Martinez gets the job will he be given time, faith and patience because in Football now instant success is demanded or you are in trouble.
Samuel.
24-05-2012, 04:43 PM
Not happy. The last three seasons have been ridiculously frustrating, and it looks like we've got to prepare for another.
Why go for Martinez over Rafa and AVB? He's younger than Rafa, but how does that even benefit us in anyway?
What has he even achieved? Saved a club from relegation a couple of times. Great. The last manager we signed that did that was a lot more successful in doing so, yet ended being a complete failure.
So pissed at this news. I don't have faith, nor am I willing to be patient, I have no reason to with a manager who has proved very little.

Brendan Rodgers is close to sealing a deal to become the new Liverpool manager.
Swansea boss Rodgers is expected to hold talks with Reds' co-owner John W Henry, and could be announced by the end of the week.
In a further twist, Wigan gaffer Roberto Martinez, who had been favourite for the Anfield post, is set to move to Aston Villa.
Henry has been impressed by the job Rodgers has done at Swansea, winning promotion to the Premier league and surviving comfortably while preaching attractive football, and feels the 39-year-old fits his template as a young, rising manager.
Rodgers spent Tuesday *afternoon locked in talks with Swans chairman Huw Jenkins, who is desperately fighting to hang on to the Ulsterman, who watched Wales play their friendly international against Mexico in New York at the weekend.

How far do you take that premise backwards?
Why do people rate Guardiola when Cryuff set Barca up to play like that? Martinez left Swansea 3 years ago, and they appointed another manager before Rogers. He was also only there for 2 years.

Well it actually was Martinez that set that style up, before then they were languishing in league 1.
I do like Rodgers, and did well this season/to get them promoted, but he's riding on Martinez's wave somewhat and should be thankful towards him
bbfan1991
30-05-2012, 03:47 PM
It is a risk though because lets say Liverpool lose a few games next season then some fans will be getting on his back.
Is a top 6 finish in terms of his first year more realistic just to let the transition period set in? Although I am sure a club like Liverpool would go for the top 4, it is tough now there are lots of teams competing for those places.
bbfan1991
30-05-2012, 03:52 PM
Swansea were one of the Premier League's top passing teams this season, that means nothing though because the points and goals matter more;).
I remember at one stage of the season Liverpool had 30 more shots on target than United but United scored more goals because we were more clinical.

I don't think that's fair in the slightest. Bob Paisley is our most successful manager, and he took the work of Shanks and improved it. Try telling Liverpool fans that Paisley rode in on the back of shanks.
It was also Cryuff who set that style up at Barca.
I prefer Rogers to Martinez because of his willingness to continue learning - He's spending time with Spain this summer, for example, to see how they work and train.
I think the chances that he fails/succeeds are exactly the same as Martinez. It comes down to personal preference, and Martinez's record is inferior to Bruce/Jewell at Wigan. I don't think that your team turning up for a couple of weeks at the end of each season qualifies you for a bigger job.
I could be wrong, because none of us have a clue how this will turn out. I'm happy to give him a chance and see what happens. I can't see any players being desperate to come and join, because of the manager, though.

Every manager is always given a chance by fans. Yes, even Hodgson. Hodgsons record has been swept under the carpet by the press, but Liverpool fans didn't get mad with him for a laugh.
He was the most disrespectful manager I've ever known, and he just didn't grasp his own stupidity and negative football was the problem, not the fans.
Liverpool fans have always been accused of worshiping their managers too much, so when we actually complain, then suddenly we are classed as unsupportive. What is it? You can't have it both ways, regardless of what the media is telling you.
I'm cautiously optimistic. He's got my support though.

Sure. Liverpool fans don't really like Mourinho, so you can maybe get a grasp of the kind of fans they would be.
Even so, a couple of fans said Mourinho, that still doesn't explain the "deluded Liverpool fans" comment. He's got a Kitty of about £25m apparently, plus any money raised from sales, so maybe it's not the completely lost cause you're painting it to be. I only treat this as press rumours, but as Mourinho is friends with Sir Alex there is always speculation he has his eye on the United job when SAF goes because of the respect they have on and off the pitch.
He made the right move in staying at Real Madrid though after their La Liga triumph this season and can continue to make improvements to them.
