Marcus Collins is reportedly close to being dropped by his record label.
RCA bosses have told the X Factor runner-up that he will be axed if his next single 'Mercy' is not a big hit.
The 24-year-old's self-titled debut album reached number seven on the UK album chart but spent just three weeks in the Top 40. His debut single, a cover of 'Seven Nation Army', reached number nine.
"Marcus's sales have been really disappointing. Although his album went in at number seven, it only spent three weeks in the Top 40," a source told the Daily Star Sunday.
"No-one expected him to flop but he's one of the most unsuccessful runners-up in the show's history.
"He has to pull it out of the bag with his second single. If that bombs, there's unlikely to be a third."
Previous runners-up including JLS, Olly Murs and Rebecca Ferguson have all proved more successful than the winners of their series.
'Mercy' is released on June 3.
He released his album to early, if he had done it when X factor started, it probably would have sold more
"No-one expected him to flop but he's one of the most unsuccessful runners-up in the show's history."

Although I accept his sales didn't light the pop world up at all, there are artistes who would near die to be able to achieve a top 10 single and top 10 album.
If getting that isn't at least some form of success then what for goodness sake is real failure.

I'm a terrible person
I like his album as well, but I mean, if it was a couple of months ago, I'd have like brought 80,000 copies of Mercy to stop him being released.

Im not surprised tbh as 40k copies of your albums being sold after a month in the charts isn't very good at all and Simon likes his artists to have good album sales.

Brilliant news. Hope we never have to hear from him again.
He's like Joe McElderry - very good but he's so polished it seems a bit fake. Permanently smiling is kind of off-putting I find, as far as X Factor contestants go, it seems too staged. Hopefully people know what I mean, I don't know if I'm making much sense. But yeah, he's not really right for pop music. Brilliant performer though - musical theatre should be his calling.

It's cool that 2011 sort of changed up the X Factor tradition. Well, it depends how Little Mix do. It's not like they have much competition until Girls Aloud come back (give up Saturdays rofl) so they'll probably do well, but even if they don't the fact the runner-up didn't do greatly is still different to previous years. Actually no, I guess it depends on Amelia too.
And I'll forever live under the delusion that Kitty Brucknell is relevant and has a bright future ahead of her.

I feel sorry for him. Don't know how Little Mix will do and Amelia has been quiet. I've got a feeling Misha B will do well though!;)
I imagine Misha will go down the Cher Lloyd route. Irritating brat pop that'll have flash in the pan success and then she'll start making enemies when her ego flares up again and she'll be gone with one album.
