To air on digital channel Slice, it'll be based on the American format

The Big Brother Phenomenon is Coming to Canada

First Ever Canadian Edition of Endemol’s Worldwide Hit Franchise Comes Exclusively to Slice™

TORONTO, May 30, 2012 /CNW/ – Shaw Media has sealed a deal with Endemol to produce the first ever Canadian instalment of the wildly popular international sensation Big Brother and has teamed up with Canadian production heavyweight Insight Productions on the production of the series. The inaugural season of Big Brother Canada will air during the 2012/13 broadcast season exclusively on Slice™.

The hugely successful Big Brother franchise aired 25 formats in 87 countries in 2011 and continues to roll out in new territories. Big Brother U.S. has consistently been a top ranked staple on Global’s schedule for 13 seasons.

“Big Brother has become a worldwide phenomenon and we’re proud to team up with Endemol and Insight Productions to launch the fan favourite format in Canada,” said Barbara Williams, Senior Vice President of Content, Shaw Media. “The production of this format is hugely exciting as it takes us into unchartered territory, filming live around-the-clock and enabling fans to interact with the series in ways we’ve never explored before.”

“After more than a decade, Big Brother is still a ratings winner in the major territories across the globe,” said David Goldberg, Chairman, Endemol North America. “Global has been a great partner from the beginning, when they brought the U.S. version of Big Brother to Canada 13 seasons ago. We look forward to seeing this proven format continue its home-grown success with the first-ever Canadian edition of the series,” he continued.

“All of us at Insight are so excited about Big Brother Canada,” said John Brunton, Chairman & CEO of Insight Productions and Executive Producer of Big Brother Canada. “Like Captain Kirk said – Boldly go where no man has gone before – we’ve never produced a show that shoots 24/7. Casting this program is going to be a blast.”

True to the U.S. format, Big Brother Canada will hand pick a diverse group of competitive contestants in the Big Brother house outfitted wall to wall with cameras and microphones to capture the house guests’ every move. Week to week the house guests compete in a series of challenges and vote each other out until one claims victory and takes home the grand prize. Fans of Big Brother can connect with the series outside of the 3-day-a-week broadcast through a myriad of digital extensions including live streaming and social engagement opportunities that allow online users to impact decisions in the house.

Details on casting and production will be revealed at a later date.

Upon recently renewing its simulcast deal for Big Brother U.S. Shaw Media will bring the highly anticipated 14th season of Big Brother to on Global July 12.

There have already been seven French-language Canadian series

Oh look...there's a surprise. In fact, take note at the whole sentence C5, as it seems this channel aims to balance 'social media' with live feed.

Might actually give this a try if it's English-speaking and there's a live feed.

My bad, although to be fair I wasn't expecting a thread about Canadian BB to be posted in the USA forum, regardless of format

Yeah, I was gonna say if only they'd adopted the UK's format, then we could have literally all swapped BBUK for this seeing as it'll have a live feed.

Imagine C5's faces if they came on here to discover we're all watching a foreign BB and not their trash :joker:

BBAU is the most similar English speaking one to ours. The format shouldn't affect the live feed though.

So all the Canadians you know on the BBUK forums prefer BBUK to BBUS!? OMG no way!! I wonder if all the baseball fans at Yankee Stadium prefer the yankees or the red sox...

For the record I think Canada did have a BB similar to BBUK (though it was in French). It flopped.

Actually the US version is shown on a big channel in Canada since the beginning. They've been asking for their own version or allow Canadians on the US version. And I've seen a bunch of excited people who will be auditioning for the show.

I live on the border with Canada and I know a lot of Canadians who watch and enjoy BBUS. Obviously Canadians on BBUK forums would prefer BBUK.

k i guess it depends where cause i have about 20 friends who watch BBUS and all my siblings do and some of my cousins. And i told some of my friends who love bbus as much as i do to try bbuk, they said it was too slow paced so idk, it depends on how much time peple have i think aha

tbh now canada is like the US's little sidekick especially with conservatives in power
so why cant canadians at least try out for american shows ???
Cause big brother usa fan is right, canadians have been wanting to try out for bbus forever

Probably just because it would be a pain in the ass for producers to have to deal with things like getting work visa's for Canadians and dealing with all the paperwork and tax issues involved with game shows and stuff. Technically being on Big Brother is a job, they get paid to be on the show even if they don't win.

Also i think maybe Endemol don't want Canadians on the US version because they want a Canadian channel to pay for their own version.

^ Lol, all true points.
Canada has barely any good shows atm and all the reality tv shows are horrible compared to the US version its based off.

i meant reality tv shows, not game shows.
So survivor, big brother, amazing race, apprentice etc

It's different because being on a reality show is considered "working in the US" so Canadians need a work Visa, being on a Game show is not considered "working".

Although for Survivor you'd think it would be different because Survivor isn't actually in the US.

I'm quite looking forward to this as I think it might be kind of what we want BBUSA to be - essentially follow the BBUSA format, but they'll take a few risks and throw in a few twists to shake it up and differentiate it from BBUSA.

I'm sure they will. The Head Executive Producer is the same one for shows like Idol, Top Chef.
