View Full Version : Do we really need a filter on the word ****?

Redway

Do we? I mean, I can understand 'f' and 'c' words but why the 's' word? Is it really considered that offensive a word today? Does it cheapen up the forum is it just a word that doesn't need a censor? Personally, I'd class it on the same level as 'crap' or 'piss' and those words aren't filtered out.

Over to you guys...

Think you're pushing it a little bit there. I'd rather there was no filter, too, but I can understand **** and c to the unt and that. But ****? Really? That actually takes the piss, IMO. After all, it comes out of your body every day.

Obviously there should not be a filter. Astrexis and crap members make the forum look cheaper than swearing and if anyone is offended by the swearing then it's their problem and they are in the minority - not the majority.

However this has been done to death and the swear filter is obviously here to stay. James loves it. It's his baby. Source of pride and joy. Reneging on it at this point after how much he has defended it in the past would be lunacy I can only compare to offering blowjobs to greyhounds.

There shouldn't be a filter at all, they're just words.

But yeah, sh*t is the most stupid one of the lot. Quite frankly if you're offended by the word 'sh*t', you can eat my sh*t.

Swear filter broken - yet no warning?

Posters are breaking the swear filter left, right and centre. Yet it's only a few of us that have ever been infracted for it.

But yet we're all treated the same. Cough, cough.

I wouldn't have the swear filter in place, but with the younger members, I can understand that.

If nothing else the actual filters need to be sorted out on the three main words - sh*t, fuc* and *****. Because when they're all filtered, they all look the same - ****, ****, ****.

And that doesn't make any sense whatsoever when you're trying to read a post, no one knows which word you used. Surely the words should be filtered as I demonstrated in the first line? That'd make more sense...

Stu

How does the filter help with that? You already know the astrexis are swears so it makes no difference. And it's not as if members who don't usually swear will suddenly take it up if it's err ... legalised.

So uhh ... yeah.

I support this measure.

I like knowing if someone is calling me a ***** or simply telling me to fuc* off. There is a world of difference.

The thing I don't get about swear filters is that: anyone who's offended by swearing is hardly going to read a post that says "I ****ing hate Luke S" and think "oh well there's no swear word there, thank god I don't have to take offence now".

There was a massive thread on this about a year back, I think Stu made it - pretty much all of us agreed that it shouldn't be filtered. But do the Admins listen? No.

I tell you what cheapens the forum, the state of it - in terms of presentation. Not how we speak.

I use a Grand Theft Auto forum, the amount of times I've found myself censoring words out with 'stars' is a joke - I'm so use to doing it on TiBB that I forget, on the GTA Forum - swearing is legal.

It's a bit weird really, we're all here because we either watch or watched Big Brother, which contains swear word after swear word. It'd be a bit like a porn forum not allowing pictures of naked people.

That's a GIF in that person's post, not their sig. And actually, it sums up Channel 5 and is completely relevant to the thread.

I wouldn't really enjoy reading through this place without a swear filter though. Sure we watch Big Brother and know about them, and sure the stars don't hide the fact there was a swear posted, but there's just something unsettling about the thought of seeing everyone freely roaming about posting profanities. At least the "****"s keep it covered up.

Good post.

Everyone knows when '****' shows up on their screen it's one of the 3, so may as well make it clearer which one of the 3 it is. And the swear word is still not written out in full so members who are for the swear filter shouldn't be affected by it.

I'm sorry but I really don't like this argument. I'm sure the people who don't like swearing are in the minority (and even then I respect their views - just don't think the minority should speak for all) and we were all newbies...yet the majority don't have a problem with swearing.

So...yeah.

Nah, I disagree. I've never considered 'twat' a swear word, just a rude/derogatory term, whereas 'sh*t' I have. I think 'sh*t' is like the entry level swear word, and then you move up the chain to fuc*, wank and then finish with good old ***** (that's what he said).

But even nowadays I'd say in most areas of life sh*t is becoming less and less of a 'swear word' as such.

Let's just hope they don't start bleeping BB like mad, especially not with the likes of Ashleigh. Seeing as we have no live feed, it's all shown after the watershed, there's no point. It's not a show for children, anyway. Everybody knows what to expect off BB, so I'm flabbergasted that the words still get bleeped.
