Thought a European ref would have been better.

Yeah Ronaldo definitely played a part in it, I agree. But you have to admit Rooney was bang out of order, kicking and pushing, foul language - all right in front of the referee! Nobody I know who i was watching with at least argued with the referee there. And they're all playing for their country at the end of the day.

But what I am REALLY upset about is the fact that England had 10 players for well over an hour, and Portugal STILL couldn't get a goal!! Which is why we totally deserved to win.

I'm going to lose so much interest in the World Cup now that England isn't there. Besides, it's not like Portugal is going to get any further than the semi-final anyway! Have to agree with most of what has been said in the thread so far, the ref was obviously too harsh and Ronaldo is a s.o.b, the ref was not even going to send Rooney off until that cretin got involved.I hope he leaves Manchester United so we don't have to see him and his stupid playacting on match of the day each week. Owen Hargreaves was man of the match for me today, worked his sock's off for the whole game and to think he was being slated by quite a few England fan's.

France were very good today.Zidane put in one of the great performances of the world cup so far, he is really ending his career on a high.I think if they play to that level again they will beat Portugal but Ronaldo and the returning Deco will proably dive all over the pitch and get a few France players sent off.

Argentina were certainly the team who I felt should have won it but Pekerman messed up with his subs against Germany.Germany have impressed me though so perhaps them.

I've not liked Italy since their game against USA where I felt they were poor and De Rossi's elbow was sickening, then the cheating against Australia.

The standard of football has dropped in recent years. Seeing Zidane the other night was a joy to watch, something I haven't enjoyed in so long.

To put things in context, I'm not english (although my dad is), I'm from Northern Ireland, I support Man Utd, love Rooney and have never really liked C. Ronaldo, who I feel doesn't contribute enough to the team on a consistent basis.

For what it's worth, here's my two pence worth:

- There's no question that Rooney should have been sent off for stamping on the other guys nuts. It was malicious, intended to cause injury and just plain stupid.

- To those who said that the ref wasn't going to do anything until Ronaldo approached the ref, where the hell are you getting this from. :shocked: The ref was literally two foot away from Rooney when he did it, and the ref blew the whistle the second that Rooney stamped on him. It was a clear red card offence and it didn't make one bit of difference what Ronaldo said. Plus, Ronaldo never did the whole "waving the imaginary card" thing, but he was clearly (and understandably ) outraged that his fellow countryman had just had his balls stamped on. For the england fans out there, try and imagine it the other way round. You really don't think a england player would have been outraged if a portuguese player had attacked an england player in the same way?

- To those idiots (and yes, mod me for calling fellow forum users idiots) who are encouraging people to send hate mail to the ref, wise the ****** up, will ya? The ref had no option but to send Rooney off, but even if he was completely biased and one-sided that is no reason to subject anyone to that kind of treatment. It's happened in the past, when the ref who had disallowed a Campbell goal late in an international game recieved death threats and even had idiotic england fans turn up at his home town (in Switzerland, I think) and shout abuse outside his flippin home! The guy had to get security arranged just to be able to live in his own home. Thats not funny, it's not even understandable, it's downright disgusting and no one should be advocating the same to any person but particularly this ref who did nothing wrong in sending Rooney off.

But I still think that supporting a team for the sole reason that they are not England is a strange attitude to have. This has been happening since before the first game they played in this tournament.

And this is the evidence on which you base your opinion that all Argentine, Scottish, Irish etc refs are biased and are gonna cheat when refereeing an england game!! Have you anymore evidence or is your opinion just based on conjecture and racially motivated mistrust?

And, Argentina never had any influence over Australia qualifying. I think the game you're referring to is the Italy - Australia game where the stupid Australian defender threw himself at the Italian running at him in the box and got nowhere near the ball. It was a penalty.

Or what about the spot on, dead cert penalty that Argentina were denied (the player actually got booked for diving) in the Argentina - Germany game which stopped Argentina going through.

As for the suggestion that english clubs shouldn't have foreign players, I don't want to be rude, but in my opinion, thats just rather silly. It would be against the principles of the free movement of labour within the European Union, it would be isolationist and would ensure that english football would be rubbish to watch and ineffective in european club competitions.

I think to be fair, football fans in England are far more passionate than the Scottish or Irish fans. I think Scots and Irish (and Welsh) are used to failure, and England, a massive footballing nation, demand more.

I think reaching the Quarter Finals was a good achievement, considering we only reached Round 2 :blush2: But we only havd 16.5m people :blush2:

You can't really say about what referee's you get, but all referee's are human, so they will have favourite teams and nations like you or I. I did find it very odd, an Argentinian in charge of England though.

One thing you must also remember, the Italians, Germans and French are worse than the English. They have in depth analysis at any exit, and the demand winning the World Cup...........anything less is not good enough.

Bigger nations have bigger demands, I am from a relatively small nation, we have biggish demands, but when we get knocked out, it lasts a few days and then we move on.

The question is, where do you draw the lines of racism? I'd find it racist of we were to play England, and a German or Belgian stuck an English flag in their avatar. Some would use it in jest, but over the internet, you never know if anyone is talking the truth or lying.

Either way, we have our 4 semi finalists, and based on the teams, squad of players and recent performances, Italy or Portugal must not win the trophy, or you may as well tell all players to go out and try and break people's legs (Deco on Heitinga) and/or dive (Grosso the most famous) and/or headbutt opponents (De Rossi)

yep totally agree with the dutch viewpoint, In fact I like the dutch attitude to the game, fair and sportsmenlike. was a shame to see Holland go out the competition.
when it comes down to it anyone who really believes the winner of this world cup is the best team in the world is very deluded. too many excellent teams were driven out by dodgy refereeing and cheating players in other teams.

Italy vs Germany looked a decent game from what I saw of it, even players getting straight up after being fouled, what a refreshing change that was.I was certain it was going to penalties but two good goals by Italy and I think they will proably go on to win the world cup now, they just look so solid defensivly and have strength in depth on the bench.
