I think she felt guilty and gave that unnecessary speech. Also she was standing right behind him perhaps she couldn't look him in the eyes. He grabbed her hands and wouldn't let her go, cause he wanted to comfort her cause I think he though she was a bit upset. She relented and hopped on the sofa to embrace him.
