[The comedian is alleged to be the largest beneficiary of the K2 tax scheme, which protects £168m a year from the taxman in Jersey.
According to a special investigation by the Times newspaper, thousands of high earners in Britain use the scheme to carefully do their accounting “under the radar”.
It claims an accountant disclosed Mr Carr had sheltered £3.3m a year through the company.
Lawyers for the comedian have confirmed he is a member of K2, but categorically denied any wrongdoing, saying the scheme had been disclosed to the relevant authorities in line with the law.]

But I think the Government should look at these huge corporations, such as "Top Shop" and "Vodafone" etc etc - who don't pay tax.

Prime Minister David Cameron has refused to criticise Gary Barlow over alleged use of a tax avoidance scheme.

Labour is calling on the Take That star to hand back the OBE he received in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

He is facing questions about money he is alleged to have invested in a tax scheme - Icebreaker 2 - being investigated by HM Revenue and Customs.

There is no suggestion the scheme is illegal but it could still be closed down by HMRC at a tax tribunal.

Mr Cameron said he was not going to give a "running commentary" on people's tax affairs - but he had made an exception for comedian Jimmy Carr because "it was a particularly egregious example of an avoidance scheme that seemed to me to be wrong".

Labour leader Ed Miliband opted not to join in with criticism of Jimmy Carr's tax arrangements, saying: "I'm not in favour of tax avoidance obviously, but I don't think it is for politicians to lecture people about morality."

But Labour has now accused Mr Cameron of having a partial view of "what's dodgy in the tax system".

Shadow commons leader Angela Eagle said: "The prime minister rushed to the TV studios to condemn the tax avoidance scheme used by Jimmy Carr but he did not take the opportunity to condemn as morally repugnant the tax avoidance scheme used by Conservative supporter Gary Barlow, who's given a whole new meaning to the phrase 'Take That'.

"If it's all so morally repugnant, why has he just been given an OBE in the birthday honours list?"

Take That's manager Jonathan Wild declined to comment.

Mr Barlow, Mr Wild and Take That members Howard Donald and Mark Owen are said to have invested £26m in a scheme - Icebreaker 2 - that is facing a legal challenge from HMRC.

HMRC said: "We are now preparing to litigate Icebreaker 2 but for legal reasons cannot say more at this time."

Beneficiaries of such schemes were normally forced to pay money back with a penalty.

HMRC had already closed down a similar scheme, Icebreaker 1, and was hopeful of closing Icebreaker 2 down at a tax tribunal later this year, he added.

David Cameron's father ran a network of offshore investment funds to help build the family fortune that paid for the prime minister's inheritance, the Guardian can reveal.

The structure employed by Cameron senior is now commonplace among modern hedge funds, which argue that offshore status can help attract international investors. UK residents would ordinarily have to pay tax on any profits they repatriated, and there is nothing to suggest the Camerons did not.

Nevertheless, the dramatic growth of such offshore financial activity has raised concerns that national tax authorities are struggling to pin down the world's super-rich.

Ian Cameron took advantage of a new climate of investment after all capital controls were abolished in 1979, making it legal to take any sum of money out of the country without it being taxed or controlled by the UK government.

Not long after the change, brought in by Margaret Thatcher after her first month in power, Ian Cameron began setting up and directing investment funds in tax havens around the world.

Leaving his full-time role as a City stockbroker, Ian Cameron went on to act as chairman of Close International Asset management, a multimillion-pound investment fund based in Jersey; as a senior director of Blairmore Holdings Inc, registered in Panama City and currently worth £25m; and he was also a shareholder in Blairmore Asset Management based in Geneva.

However, the family will – a public document seen by the Guardian – only details the assets of Ian Cameron's estate in England and Wales. Offshore investments would only be listed in submissions to HMRC for inheritance tax purposes. It is unclear what those assets – if any – are worth and which family member owns them.

In 2009 the compilers of the Sunday Times Rich List estimated Ian Cameron's wealth at £10m.

He was survived by his wife, Mary Fleur Cameron, who as his spouse would not have had to pay inheritance tax on sums transferred between them.

In 2006 Ian's eldest son, Alexander, became the sole owner of the family's £2.5m house in Newbury, Berkshire, where David had been brought up.

Another family home in Kensington, London, worth £1m, passed to his two daughters in equal share.

David Cameron is facing calls to pay back cheap loans of £1.2 million to the Conservative Party from companies registered in tax havens.

The party was last night accused of hypocrisy for taking advantage of loans from offshore firms, after the Prime Minister criticised Jimmy Carr, the comedian, for using a tax avoidance scheme in Jersey.

The Conservative Party accepted the two loans on favourable terms from companies in known tax havens before the last election.

One £250,000 loan came from Juniper Trading, registered in the British Virgin Islands. It was given in 2004 at 0.25 per cent below the base rate, to be repaid in 2029.

Another £950,000 loan was made by the Medlina Foundation, based in Liechtenstein, at the base rate plus 1 per cent in the same year.

Last night a Tory spokesman said: “These are historic loans from before David Cameron was Conservative Party leader. The Conservative Party no longer accepts loans from non-UK trading companies.”

John Mann, the Labour MP for Bassetlaw, said Mr Cameron ought to hand back the money. “It would be the height of hypocrisy if he didn’t return those loans immediately. I’m sure it’s an oversight that he’ll pay attention to straight away to demonstrate his consistency.”
