I was reading the 'are we anti-american' thread, it occured to me that we have quite a few posters from the states these days following our BB. Just wondering how many/who they were tick the poll if you so wish!

The only person that would hit that last option would be Osama Bin Laden - I'm sorry but that has to be the most pointless Poll Answer, ever.

The last option on the poll is handy for aliens. im sure if they wanted to study us humans big brother would be ideal. must be one boggle eyed alien from planet blob lurking on here as someone has voted that already lol

I like BB UK more than BB USA sometimes because the US version gets so hateful fast and its all about manipulation and forming aliances. I like the UKs restriction on nomination talk and also the highlight shows and eviction shows. The US doesnt do daily highlights and the people dont get as involved.

Indy

Of all the things the US version does differently, the worst part is that one person nominates and the rest of the house votes. It's basically Survivor with climate control. I'd love to see them do a season the UK way - everyone nominates, the public votes. The live feed viewers get rabid as it is when they're powerless. I'd love to see them turned loose on the actual game.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!! We tried that Season 1 and the public evicted the entertaining hgs first and the most boring hgs were left. Even if they did vote to save the attractive male christian dogooder would always win. and if they were a douchebag America wouldn't know it since they would be edited to be a nice guy.

Jeff is a GREAT example of this.

Now I do watch the UK version. I do like the evictions but don't like some of the editing. I don't like it with them just talking about random stuff. Nominations should be discussed. But I don't want it being done 24/7.

I find that I enjoy both BB UK/US. I kind of like BB US a bit better because I like the strategizing- I HATE the producer Grodner- she carries the game in favor of her favorites but the show is still pretty good.
I like BB UK because I do find it entertaining and I do like the fact that BB is a character in the house.

Perfect comment. I absolutely HATE Jeff- his sense of entitlement last season and Grodner covering up for his BS on feeds was just too much. The fast forward when he was eliminated is one of the best BB episodes I have ever seen... What the Producers did to save Jordan/Rachel was pathetic.

Canada here.

It was one helluva trick when I had to get live-feeds or even find episodes.

Toronto Matt is right - there are a lot of Canadian viewers. We did not have our *BB and plenty of us also lost interest (or never had) in the superficial American version.

*Trivia: Canada actually did have an original 'BB' which was called 'The Loft' and might have been one of the first ever versions anywhere.
The Loft featured obnoxious disrespectful housemates (loftmates?) probably years ahead of its time.
I think it was canceled after 1 season?

** It turns out Canada is actually getting it's own Big Brother. At first glance it appears to be a cheap American-wannabe version (??) body-shavers and bikini girls playing 'summer pool party'??

(I was living in the UK for BB1 (and some later ones) hence the lifelong addiction).

Happy Canada Day

Toronto Matt and El Proximo, why "Forget the Americans" and call our TV "Cheap" and the rest of your negative comments. While I agree that the American BB leaves alot to be desired, you dont have to generalize and speak ill. This is why some Americans believe Canadians are jealous and bitter towards their big brother to the south.

One more thing, you too are American OK, we both inhabit the North American continent so by defenition Canadians are also Americans..

Cheers And Happy 4th of July tomorrow!

ElProximo

I did not intend to be negative about Americans or America. What I did want to say is that the American BB is 'superficial'.

[well, in fairness, many of them are to some degree]

It was Canadian BB i called 'Cheap' and 'American wannabe' (which is worse, a cheap version of a superficial version).

Here is the thing: I believe most Americans would be the first to say BBUSA really IS a superficial (orientated, focused,) version. Americans in the USA would say that.
But I was more critical of the Canadian version(s).

Voting out big characters is just as big a problem in the UK as anywhere. The vote to save only really kicks in when it's 3 or more HMs.

I watched one season of the American one and hated the voting structure and NONSTOP noms talk. The whole bloody show was competitions and noms talk. I much prefer UK as it is PERSONALITY based.

I really do wish they posted up a load of rambling chats in the website. If people don't like that sort of thing they wouldn't have to watch it. I would just LOVVVVEEEE to have the option there though!

I think there was a few clips of that during BB11. like for example some hgs were punished for breaking food restrictions. Like Jeff came out into the backyard and said that he had an extra day of slop for sipping on some Gatorade (something like Luzcozade). Kevin got repremanded for eating 1 grape as well (He got an extra day of slop).

BBUSA isn't afraid of punishments, He just rarely has to.

we do just not to evict a hg. instead we choose what snacks to give to those on slop restrictions, we choose some of the competitions, we vote back in an evicted hg. And at the end of the season we give our favorite hg $25,000 a separate prize from the main prize (500,000 dollars) which is decided by a jury of the last 7 evicted hgs from that season. They choose the winner out of two people.

Indy

so the BB USA doesn't have a public vote? how bizarre

The only thing US BB has in common with UK BB is the house. They don't do daily tasks, instead they have one to choose a head of household (the only person allowed to nominate), one for food and/or luxuries (most weeks, half the house isn't allowed to eat real food, only "slop", a survivalist protein gruel that apparently tastes terrible and causes gastric distress), then one for the power of veto (only 6 people allowed to compete - HoH, the 2 nominees, and 3 chosen at random), where the winner is allowed to save and replace one nominee or leave it as it stands. 3 days with competitions, one day for voting and eviction, the other 3 days are nothing but strategy, backstabbing and whining.

The final 2 are determined by a 2 day series of endurance competitions, and all the evicted housemates choose the winner from the final 2.

MatthewS
03-07-2012, 06:10 PM
Agreed. The only similarities is that they share the name, and both revolve around people living together in a house. Everything else is different. Never could get into BBUS personally, the whole process is unappealing to me.

I think you will find that Canadians are North Americans in the sense that Britian is part of Europe. We certainly are not 'American', and we just celebrated our own National Holiday on July 1st, so HAPPY CANADA DAY!!!

I can assure you, Canada is not Jealous of America lol. We're quite happy here ;)

Truth be told, I think it's the other way around. I can think of a lot of reasons why Americans probably should be jealous of Canada. But, I'd be hard pressed to come up with as many the other way around....

*not trying to be a d*ck, honest debate ;)*

Another Matt from Toronto? :wavey:

Matty, ive been to canada many times and love it and yes you have many things far better than the US. But I did encounter some intelectual wanabee douche bags from Toronto university talking smack about the US for no reason and it seemed they were bitter. Now I am not the average american traveller with the fanny pack, sandals and socks, looking for a McDonalds... I love my country but am very objective about its shortcomings and how awefull some american travellers behave abroad. But there is no need for belittlleling other peoples nationalities, it is uncalled for and sounds like jealousy, if your happy in your place, there is no need to tear somebody elses down.

Surely there must be something positive you can say, I dont thnk its that hard pressed

I've also been to the US many, many times, and we are very similar in a lot of ways. I certainly didn't mean to come across sounding like I was against America or anything of that nature, and I spologize if it appeared as such. Its a beautiful country and I've met a lot of great people there that I'm happy to consider friends. I don't agree with a lot of things that are done there (your foreign policy, health care, gun control, etc), but that's all good, I'm sure people don't agree with a lot of things we do in Canada as well. The people are what matter most, not the elected officials pushing paper at the top.

Sorry to hear about your experience at U of T. That was my school and in many diciplines its regarded as the top educational institution in the country, so hearing these short sighted comments is concering. Are you sure they were U of T students and not just protesters?

Agreed. The only similarities is that they share the name, and both revolve around people living together in a house. Everything else is different. Never could get into BBUS personally, the whole process is unappealing to me.

interesting, the Spanish BB is pretty much the same as the UK one. This year they had someone who paid 50000 euros in a bid on E-bay to get into the show, turns out he's on trial for robbery now

Trust me, ever since I've been in Spain I am able to compare the policies and healthcare.. way better in europe!!! No comparison really and the US has a lot to learn. Wow you went to U of T? Yes they were from the University a few friends and I decided to do some backpacking and U of T rents out the dorms in the summer. We stayed there a few days and met some wonderful people and some not so wonderfull, but I guess its the same everywhere.

Good word to describe BBUS,the whole show seems to be in the control of the tv station, always gives the impression it's fixed in some way.

It is. Most people don't know that. I may or may not have some good reasons to know this.
Let's just put it this way. American TV geeks my know that American Gameshows eventually became strictly regulated (after a few schemes were caught out).
I think there was a movie about it too. $64,000 question. Basically all games have to register, get audited etc.

BBUSA is classified as a recurring drama. a 'Soap Opera'. It is, technically speaking, a scripted reality show which can be rewritten as it goes along. There is ZERO obligation for them to follow any rules.

Anyways Happy Fourth of July to our American friends.

*and we can all agree Toronto sucks and especially their American Jr universities 'intellectuals'. Booooooooooo

BBUS changed gradually, and the year the sr producer "retired" and someone else took over, was the year the real changes happened (aka the year of Evel Dick). That was the year the alleged twist was people ending up surprised in the house with their enemies. Except, it came out later, the winner and his enemy (daughter) auditioned together and rode together to the first day of filming in the same BB provided limo. They knew from the start they'd be in together, and had worked out a code in advance for her brother to send them letters from home to tell them who to trust and who not to trust in the house.

I am Canadian too, but certainly not American, as the term has been stolen by the USA.

In Quebec we had the French version of BB, called Loft story for many years, not my type of show a bit weird, I can't say why, it was kind of over the top, but it was popular and it kind of evolved into another concept for couple match making, guys living in a house and girls living in a house next door, and the final guy and girl went on a vacation and won one of the houses, it is still an active show, extremely popular and very magazine oriented, weddings and divorce the whole craziness of it. LOL.

Does anyone know when the Canadian BB will be and broadcaster?

BB USA is not fixed per se, a lot of "coaching" can go on in the diary room and some of the competitions can be geared towards certain people, they try to cover it up sometimes but it always comes out. The main difference is the voting is by the contestants so major alliances/betrayals etc. (the tv show itself is only so so but the feeds can be amazing at times) I like them both in different ways, i wish the US would adopt the daily tasks from the UK, oh and your host is much better than ours (sorry julie chen) at least is was when Davina was doing it....
