View Full Version : Neighbours from hell.

This isn't something I have talked about openly on the forum before, though I have discussed it in chat/pm mode with a few members out of despair, lol.
Myself and my son live in social housing and for the past, well roughly almost four years, we have been suffering terrible and escalating anti social behaviour from the neighbours kids, I'm not just talking one family, there are a few. It's a long time to put up with this sort of thing and to be frank I am pretty much at the end of my tether with it all.
For a start, we don't really fit in on the estate, I'm far from being any kind of a snob, but I just don't like the general mentality, no intentions of working, milking the system, having loads of kids who also are never going to work for a living. The constant foul language in everyday conversation, every other word is F this and B that, and more. The gangs of kids that spit at people as they pass. I exaggerate not. Anyway, being a person who sticks up for herself, I've never shied away from asking people to stop their behaviour. Apparently this was a massive mistake. It shouldn't have been, because any decent people would have reacted reasonably. Since then, in the past few years, it's escalated to the point where I get verbal abuse on a daily basis from kids aged anything from 5/6 to your physically threatening 16 year olds (the girls are worse than the boys) These families are huge. I approached the housing association to see if they could help and got told that it might be better to just let it calm down/blow over as if they got involved it would probably get worse. No help whatsoever. Meanwhile it continues.
I started to keep an antisocial behaviour diary, and handed it in to the Police Station. My estate has a dedicated Police Station base in the middle, it's like Beirut on a night. Of course, the Police then act on what is put down in these diaries, and hey presto, the abuse steps up a notch. Last Winter my son and myself had been to the LaserQuest Arena in the town centre and it was late when we came home, we were both physically assaulted by two youths from one of these families, who I took to court and guess what they got? 30 hours of community service. :bored:
It's still ongoing and this weekend I have finally snapped, my son came in really really upset, some of the younger kids in one of the families had been shooting at him, bare arms and face, with those BB pellet guns. He had run home and came in, in a right state. He's been brought up not to hit other kids and he's a respectful lad. I was absolutely livid. I went out and over to the house. Within two minutes, literally, the street was full of these families who have been causing all this, must have been 25/30 people there, all shouting the odds AT ME! Let me tell you I gave as good as I got, and lost my temper completely, told them what I thought in no uncertain terms.
The response, "they are only kids" was all they could come up with.
My argument was that they shouldn't have these guns/ be supervised, but basically I was wasting my breath and they didn't give a ****. I was threatened physically, and said i was going to report it to the police.
Again, the typical response "there's a lot of us and one of you, we'll all say you're lying".
Next thing, someone had actually been down to the Police Station and they arrived.
Outcome, I was taken home by a female officer while the two male officers told them all to wind their necks in. They then came to talk to me and said because I'd kicked off in retaliation they couldn't/wouldn't do anything further and I should think twice before standing up to them again. One of the male officers said "You'd better calm down or you'll be arrested" to me. Knobhead.
I want to take this further, so what do I do? Has anyone reading ever experienced stuff like this? What would you do?

I don't know what to suggest I am afraid. It must seem like you are banging your head against a brick wall when faced with such people with the kind of mentality where they just think they can do what they want and don't give a toss about anyone else's feelings. The only thing I can suggest is to persevere, and hopefully, sometime soon, it will pay off. It must be truly awful though and I do feel for you.
If you get anti-social behaviour happening directly outside your home, some kind of CCTV camera might be a good investment, for as you say, it's normally their word against yours, and anything caught on camera will always help in such cases. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Oh dear what a nightmare you are experiencing. I too live in an anti-social behavour area. Not your type of anti social behavour mine is very Loud music from several homes in the area at differing times.........Swearing kids yes I get that too and vandalism. Had my car stolen gone forever. I own my property but am trying to get away.......However in an area with a reputation that may not be easy because house prices are suppressed by anti social behvour let alone the economic situation.
You call the police knobheads. Bang on a true and fitting description. Last year some goon was shooting pellets at my satellite dish putting dents in it and risking harm to my dog who was in the garden. I called the police and a plastic policeman came (by that I mean one of those amateur usless community officers). Oh he said one is allowed to play with a shot gun in the privacy of your own back yard. "What children are I said followed by a blank look by the copper shaking his head...oh no not children he said".
Yes they are total knobheads along with our law makers who enable the police to be so inefective and downright stupid.....
That's got something off my chest as like you I find there is sadly no realistic solution exept if you can by one means or another just get the hell out of the area. The authorities won't help they will challenge you for trying to defend your rights. I am 71 years old and when I look back 50 years and remember where I lived was like living in a park. Now thank's to decades of inaction by polititions large areas of Britain have become anti social pig holes......The country will only get worse.
Honestly the more you react to the bad behavour the more they will pick on you. You can't stop it. The police won't stop it. The local authority won't stop it. Keep your stress to a minimum by biting your tongue and not giving them more reason to pick on you. Defeatist yes because victory without help is not possible.
If you are young my ultimate advice to you if you can is to get the hell out of Britain ASAP. Britain is decaying socially for every month that passess...It's a pig hole turning into a cesspit..........

Sadly it doesn't make any difference if they are caught or not. If caught if even convicted of something the punishment never fits the crime and the anti social criminals just continue their activities notching up a score of flouting authority.

Arista as I have pointed out in my post above. If convicted the punishment never fits the crime. Too many dogooders thinking they can rehabilitate the scum bags. They can't and they won't. Indeed you can get into trouble by swearing back at a child let alone laying a hand on them. Try and leave if you can. In the mean time try not to challenge them you will only get more trouble for your attempts....

The anti-social behaviour diary is a good start, a friend had this trouble when she moved in, her 2 lasses got in with the wrong lot as school ...and then they all fell out.....she had a right time as like you say the girls are worse.
CCTV sounds a good idea, maybe the NPT can put you in touch with a charity which might help towards the funding for it?
Do you have a tenants and residents group in your area?they hold PACT meetings usually and there is usually a representative of the housing provider if its a council or association.
You could write to your local councillors for help too, maybe even the local paper....
Let as many people know as you can kate, it's bad enough feeling down as you search for work but when you don't even feel safe at home ...Shout it from the rooftops you need help.
If you want to exchange to a new area you could ask your doc to intervene to say it is causing you considerable stress and anxiety to remain in that area?
I really hope someone can help kate.

Some think "wrongly" the rioters were punished severly. No they were not they had their bellies tickled........When you double a short sentence you still have a short sentence......Only partly served for so called good behavour and served in easy conditions. They can watch the telly. They get drugs if they want them. Some go to open jails that are like holiday camps of fellow prisoners sharing crime tips.......No in this country the authorities are completely oblivious to enabling true deterent punishments....

Kate I won't be any help whatsoever but can I just say I'm so sorry you have to put up with that. That behaviour is nasty and made me really annoyed just reading that. The police are useless and these families are just the vile scum that's bringing this country down. Your best bet would be to move as far away as possible... but obviously that really isn't ideal. :/
Vicky.

I had this problem once. Not with gangs of neighbours but with one family who thought they were 5000 men...one day I had a few close friends round, we were drinking and the mother came round shouting and swearing on about god knows what like usual...and I just saw red(the alcohol didnt help ). Pinned her up against my wall just beside the door and threatened to cave her head in if she didnt leave me the **** alone...she bawled her eyes out, not so tough without the backup. I never got anymore trouble after that strangely enough.
I know this wont help you, as theres a lot more of them and you dont seem the type to fight fire with fire really, its probably not a good idea to do things like that when you have kids anyway just incase you get done for it, but I was only like 17 or something...nowt to lose really. Just got a little nostalgic there xD
Vicky.
02-07-2012, 05:39 PM
In your situation, all you can possibly do is move. I know thats easier said than done though...but if the police are taking no notice (as they dont usually...I think they are scared themselves tbh) then theres nothing else to do :S

Getting your doctor to write a letter advising your need to move for the benefit of your health is an excellent idea, if you can get them to do that. It can only hopefully instigate the council into doing something about your situation.
Vicky.

Its a shame that it would be considered a breach of human rights putting all scummy families like this in one street/area and putting an electric fence round to let them all fight each other and leave normal people alone really.

Anti social behavour is spreading like a bush fire. You would need to section off a third of Britain to fence them all in one area. Our big cities and large towns are infested with them.
Kate..the cctv is a good idea if you can get it funded and you're already keeping a diary..write everything down with times and dates...
..I don't know when you contacted the housing association but I would do it again..they may have some kind of procedure for mediation, which doesn't sound as though it will do any good but could be the first step to possibly getting you or some of the others rehoused...
..there are also victim support groups who will help and if you contact the police they will put them in touch with you..
..I know it's hard but if you can not react to them it will help build up your case against them..easy to say, I know...
..it's a nightmare situation and there isn't a quick fix to it..I've heard too often about the lack of interest from the police in cases like this..try and keep everything recorded and don't let the housing association fob you off
...I know you would have to pay for legal advice but if you ask your CAB..there may be a short consultation available for free

Just had a read of that thread. I do feel for your situation and there are many other people who have had to cope with that sort of thing.
Just use your diary to report any bad behaviour, giving the time and date. I also wouldn't fight fire with fire. Naturally, I'm the sort of person who isn't afraid to get into physical punch-ups, but given the sort of neighbors you have and how many of them there are you'd be best just leaving the situation and reporting it, rather than attempting to put them in their places by yourself...if they're in a gang there's no way you, one person, can defend yourself, particularly as you mentioned they all come from various families.
I'd convince the people in charge to allow you to move house, too. Just keep tight...it's going to take a while and I know St.Helens is a pretty dodgy area.

Kate, if this kind of thing happens again( shooting bb guns) don't confront them - call the police and say they have fire arms ! they will have to attend immediately and it does not matter if they are BB guns - it is totally against the law to fire any weapon at anyone - even if it is a BB gun and "they are only kids" also contact your Chief constable by letter stating how dissatisfied you are with the local officers response, TV progs such as neighbours from hell are worth contacting too, I would also send a copy of my letter to the CC to my MP.
Are you renting privately, housing association or is it a local council property ?

Unfortunately the police don't act in a manner you might think they should act. I had a weapon firing incident and reported to the police and all they did was try to make excuses about what is allowed to be used from a persons back garden. Yes they tried to justify the use of a type of gun putting dents into metal objects let alone flesh and blood should that get targeted.
As others have realised the law and indeed the police are next to useless when it comes to anti social behavour......One can record all the evidence you like and even if some sort of conviction occures the punishment won't be sufficient to deter.......That my friend is the sad fact of life in this anti social behavour infested country.
I know the poster said she cannot move the only next best thing to do is keep a low profile (not confrontational) to reduce the stress. CCT cameras or not the louts will not be scared of any conviction it's simply something to boast about for them and they will continue their behavour.
Recording police conversations may sound like a logical good idea to challenge police action as inadquate. However the poster must be aware going against the police could mean them co-operating with her complaints even less than they do now. They will be vindictive towards her I can assure you of that.....
I had my car stolen just over a year ago and when reporting the loss to the police I was treated more like a suspect rather than a victim. While waiting for my interview with the police I overheard the police talking to a thug that had hit his girl friend round the head with a kettle as if he was just a harmless naughty little boy......
Anyone who has faith in the police must have mug stamped on all over their person......
You shouldn't have to put up with it all Kate, it's terrible that kids these days result to crime and pestering other residents. It's awful

I've no idea about the legality of recording people from the safety of your home but that CCTV idea is a good one, if it's legal. Research it online, speak to the police about that idea if you think it won't do you any harm to do so, or perhaps speak to your local MP or councillor or someone in some sort of political position who will have some kind of idea as to who you can speak to about your situation... I'm trying to think of things that won't cost you any money. It's shameful that the police won't do anything though.
