Can you call richard british now that he lives in it.
It depends on whether he has become a British Citizen or not. Just living in a country does not mean you are that nationality.

If I remember correctly, he needs to be here at least four years (usually you get a work permit granted for 2 years, and then if renewed successfully, he would get another two years) before he can apply for "Indefinite leave to remain", which means he will have settled status in immigration law. Then, i think, he has to wait another year before applying for british nationality and obtaining a british passport. So it's not automatic, he has to apply for it.
That's assuming that he doesn't have any british relatives, or that there isn't some special agreement with Canada, since it's a commonwealth country as that mght change things a bit.

I am pretty sure he will need a work permit the same as Canadian ice hockey players do when they come to skate over here.

I think another Irish person would have been quite good. There have been more scousers than Irish people! Or a normal Scottish person so that the poor jocks don't feel poorly represented. Shabaz and Sam; oh dear!
You can't count Richard as British because he plans to go back to live in Canada when Big Brother finishes.

They didn't make a bad choice with those two either.
We all know Irish people make the best housemates anyway. Anna, Brian, Ray, Spiral... etc
There hasn't been anyone from Northern Ireland this year yet though  - but I get the message, it's good to see people from all over the UK and Ireland.
