serena williams was paid twice the hourly rate of male champion federer to win wimbledon , she was on court less than 10 hrs to win £1.2 million ....he was on court over 20 hours, so over double the time for the same money (her hoursly rate was 2.5 times more than his) so little time did she spend on court she entered the double and won another £1.2 milliion.... and she still was on court less than federer
women should play 5 sets at the major tournaments...and still they should be paid less as the quality is so much lower....also if we go by the argument every champion gets paid the same, which is communism, then the disabled champ should get paid the same
in fact all sports champions, women, men, disabled should all get paid the same prize money, regardless of audiences, quality, sponsorships etc
one should only get paid the same for the same quality and exact same quanity of work, womens tennis is lower in both and that is not sexist its a scientific fact
as it stands the male players are being underpaid and discriminated against, that is also a scientific fact

i think the men's champion and the women's champion should have to face eachother as the final match of wimbeldon. Everyone wants to see Serena Vs. Roger!!!

Because it's a Sport, if you ban Sports then your banning all competitions on TV like Big Brother, The X Factor etc.

Am I the only one who doesn't really understand what the OP's going on about, why would tennis players get paid hourly :suspect:

HE or she (i'm guessing it's a HE because this poster is known for his posts against women and gay men) is talking about the recent controversy when one of the male players said that women's champions should not be making as much as the men.
As it stands now, there is a rule that all championships must pay the women champions the same cash prizes as the male champions.
I'd really like to ask Rinkydonk how he thinks the men are underpaid though, last time i checked they are doing just fine. You don't seem to be bothered at all by how much they are payed, i think you are just bothered that the women make equal pay. You don't care how much they make you just want them to be paid more than women, right?

That's what it sounds like to me Lostalex.
Matt, men and women get the same prize money at Wimbledon. OP is basically saying Serena won the same amount as Roger Federer and she was on court for a shorter duration than Roger was. Hence stating out that Roger worked longer for the same amount of money as Serena.

Always thought the men did get paid more. I enjoy the womens game more but the men should get paid more considering they play 5 sets and the women play 3.

isn't it funny that the women get criticized for grunting and making so much noise for how much effort they put in, and then they get critisized saying that they don't put in enuf effort to get paid equally, wtf.
The men have testosterone which makes them able to do more physically than women, that is a fact, that doesn't mean that women don't work as hard though! infact you could probably make the argument that they are actually working HARDER because of their physical limitations.
Serena has done just as much for the sport of tennis as rafa and roger imo. She deserves her prize money, especially after having the health scares that she had last year.
Anyone that doesn't think Serena is just as much of an elite athlete as Roger Federer has obviously never watched tennis.
And if i could go back in time and give BIllie Jean King and Martina Navratolova their fair share, i would.
Serena Williams is greater on her worst day than Andy Murray has ever been on his best day.
The grunting doesn't come into in IMO, it's unnecessary. In fact when the new sound barometer then I'm sure you'll see a massive decline in the grunts and screams of Sharapova/Vika/Serena/Kirilenko and it won't affect their play.
They can play well without doing it, and they've shown that in some of the points they've played on court
I seriously hate the grunting if you didn't notice
Anyway long story short.. grunt does not necesssarily = effort.

Yeah but it seems dumb to measure it hourly because that'd be like saying you should get paid less for beating someone in straight sets instead of 5 sets, seeing as you're out there for a shorter time :suspect:

lmao, yeah exactly. It's a competition with a prize fund not an hourly paid job............get a grip :bored:

Exactly, and really good players would be thinking.. I'll just let them have this set, let it drag out another 2 hours. More money

thanks for the lies
its simple. men play 5 sets women only play 3 sets
men play twice as long as women and are therefore paid less than half the hourly rate as the women. if you really believe in equality then the first thing we need to do is get men and women to play the same amount of sets.

forcing everyone to pay women twice the hourly rate of men for less work of a lower quality, then we should therefore pay the disabled champion £1.2 million too? right? equality for all

Don't be ridiculous, they don't work on an hourly rate. It's a prize fund for a winning a competition. As MTVN pointed out earlier, if they were working on an hourly rate, the better players would earn less per game because they beat other players quicker and don't have to spend as much time on court.

the women players play less than half the time, 2 fewer sets at a much lower quality, its so much easier it allows many of the women to play mixed or double....in the case of the williams they won the doubles too, that meant another £1.2 million and still serena was on court less than federer and earnt twice as much. the women should play 5 set matches too....then we can discuss the prize mney, as it stands it discriminatory against the men

It's a competition with a prize, not a 9-5 hourly paid job. Since when do prize funds get decided by hours worked? :conf:

Exactly. There is no reason why men should get paid more. At the end of the day all players work hard to be where they are and also they have flights, accommodation and coaches to pay, this is most important for the lower ranked players.

equal work = equal pay
its mean tot be based on quality and quantity of performance, the men do more in both categories and earn less money , in federers case £1.2 less money...its discrimination against men....the women should by law have to play 5 sets before even being considered for equal prize money...but as it stands they earn more for less quality and less quantity....the men players would be well in their rights to take this to a civil court

I take all points on board, the real answer to it, and to be fair most of the Women tennis players would agree too, is that both men and women have to play the best of 5 sets.
Tennis is unpredictable though,I recall Pete Sampras and other Mens matches being over well before some Womens matches.
Once they get to the 5th set for the Men and 3rd set for the women then both have to go on until someone wins no matter how long that takes or how many games have to be played.
The other side to the argument is that players, both Men and Women going to Wimbledon have to commit themselves for 2 weeks for the duration of the tournament,so in effect, are 'employed' for want of a better word, for the same equal time as each other, hence the equal prize money.

so if they deserve equal money , how do you explain serna williams earning twice as much as she got time for the doubles too?

youre missing the point, the women are paid more than the men, as they play for half as long at a lower quality and the games are over so quickly it allows them time to enter and win the doubles too, hence twice the prize money of the men....by the way if youre rigid one size fits all logic applies here, why not exactly the same prize money for men and women in every competition in every sport in the world oh and disabled champions too? they work just as hard right?
ps men bring in 4 times the revenues for mens finals day estimated in corporate sales. just take a look at debenture seat values, mens finals bets seats £3000 , womens £750....
so equal prizes for men and women and disabled people in every sports contest in the world? right? just to have the same as wimbledon, the mens marathon can be twice as long, football twice as long , boxing twice as long and so on
