Modern music is louder and it all sounds the same, say scientists


OH DEAR. Looks like your parents were right all along — modern pop music really is louder and does all sound the same, according to scientists in Spain.

A team of researchers led by artificial intelligence specialist Joan Serra at the Spanish National Research Council ran tunes from the past 50 years through an archive called the Million Song Dataset, which uses complex algorithms to analyse audio and lyrical content from tracks.

The results sound like a jargon-riddled version of something your average Q reader might say down a squat-rave in Peckham.

“We found evidence of a progressive homogenization of the musical discourse,” Serra told Reuters. “In particular, we obtained numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations — roughly speaking chords plus melodies — has consistently diminished in the last 50 years.”

Translation: “It isn’t ‘proper’ music, though, is it?”

As well as a steady increase in the volume built into tracks through the years, the team also found that modern pop draws on a poorer palette of timbres for its sound — ‘timbre’ referring to the quality of a given note which may vary from instrument to instrument.

Pop music is just a form of entertainment. It's not (on the whole) talent and it's not art, that's all I see it as and what I enjoy it for, as should most people.

Agreed with Shaun. You can find great examples and crap examples of pop music in any given year, you just need to know where to look - and music from the past has the advantage of being allowed to endure - we won't know what we'll remember best from now until now becomes the past and we're in the future. Pointless argument.

The first time I heard that song I was like, "oh my good God. FINALLY. FINALLY SOMEONE GETS ME." I've spent years hoping and praying for a song to be made that truly reflects how I feel inside. I've wept myself to sleep more times than I can count, all because there was no song that could stop the tears. And then, I turn on the radio, and I hear it. I hear the song. And I weep. But with happiness. No-one can ever take that away from me. "Stupid Hoe" is the song that saved my life. It spoke to me in a way that no song has or will ever speak to me again. It is genius. Pure genius.

Pop was better in the 1960- 1970's
as real Drums were used.

People take Pop too seriously. Music doesn't need to be dissected. It's entirely subjective. People listen to certain music for different reasons. Sometimes people just want to listen to fun, feel-good pop tunes to lighten their mood a bit. It doesn't need to be "scientifically perfect". It doesn't all need to be serious.

The one thing I cannot stand is music snobbery. Just because you don't like something doesn't make it "****", everyone has different tastes and everyone looks for a different musical experience.
