Drake is currently hosting his OVO Festival in Toronto, but over on his OVO blog, an intriguing post just popped up: "Enough Said", an Aaliyah song with a guest verse from Drake. He's been hinting at some sort of Aaliyah project for a couple days, but information about the song is still scarce.

Why would anyone let him have access to the vocals of a decade long deceased popstar who, as lovely as she was, wasn't all that? I mean, really? What is the point of this? He could have roped another 90s popstar in and achieved the same thing - I don't think Brandy's up to much nowadays.

Her voice is pleasant but come on, her career wouldn't have gone into the stratosphere, she was maybe top of the pack of R'n'B-lite female pop singers at that time for a while, that's all. Ashanti is nowhere nowadays, for comparison.

maybe if Lumidee had packed too many bags onto her plane she'd be idolised today as well

It is very strange the way he seems to be really really obsessed and in love with her even though he never met her.

I remember buying Age Ain't Nothing But A Number back in '94 after the guy in the record store recommended it to me whilst buying Old Time's Sake by Sweet Sable and MJB's What's The 411? remix album. Never heard anything by her before that, just bought it on spec. Thought it was great, and it still remains one of my favourite albums to this day. I think she could have gone on to bigger and better things, but sadly we'll never know.

Perhaps she could have. Putting her tragic death aside, I think his use of her vocals is wholly inappropriate. Her fans must be somewhat annoyed that he's using previously unheard vocals from her on this track - you'd think they would release this kind of stuff posthumously so that there aren't any unwelcomed surprises like this. It says a lot that people are making versions of this song without the Drake parts.

This project is starting to fall apart.

Drake recently unveiled his redux of Aaliyah’s “Enough Said,” and rumors of his involvement with a posthumous album from the singer have been buzzing. However, Aaliyah’s family claims they are not involved or supportive of such a project. The late singer’s brother, Rashad Haughton, told The Guardian, “There is no official album being released and supported by the Haughton family.”
.

“Enough Said” is built from one of Aaliyah’s previously unreleased vocal tracks and produced by Noah “40″ Shebib. Drake added his own verse to the track, in which he brags about his watch, which seems really appropriate. So far the number has drawn a lot of criticism and not too much praise. Aaliyah, who died in 2001, was known for her work with Missy Elliott and Timbaland, but neither artist was approached to work on this track — or any future ones. Timbaland said, “I don’t know what’s going on. The proper way to do [a collaboration] would be for me, [Drake] and Missy to be all on the record.”
.

It sounds like Drake has since made contact with the producer, however. Timbaland will reportedly produce two songs on this rumored Aaliyah album, with Shebib helming the other numbers. The singer’s family has not been contacted, though, much to their dismay. The family wrote on Facebook, “Do you want a [new] Aaliyah album? If so, who should executive produce it or be featured on it? The Haughton family would love to hear what her FANS have to say.”
.

Unfortunately, Drake doesn’t need the family support exactly. According to The Guardian, Aaliyah’s uncle and manager, Barry Hankerson, issued all of her previous records and is likely to own the rights to her unreleased recordings. Hankerson runs a company called Blackground, which co-released “Enough Said” with Drake’s October’s Very Own. So it looks like this album is happening no matter what.
.

What do you think of Drake’s involvement in Aaliyah’s music? Should someone else be at the helm?
