I totally agree with you. I cannot stand it when people start speaking in that fake "Jamaican" accent when they've never been near the place. Like me speaking with a German or French accent when I'm English. The grammar is poor and coupled with those stupid hand movements it just turns me off. You can add Ashley in there as well. He's a nice lad but that stupid false accent does my head in. :conf:

By the way, hate hip hop and rap as well so don't want to hear any more of that crap.

Thanks.

Considering a lot of black people from Londons parents and family and friends family's etc are from that part of the world. Obviously they are going to pick up on an accent.

You go and grow up around people of a certain nationality, associate with people of the same nationality, be surrounded by these people most days, see if you don't pick anything up....

yeah that is true, it's also like if say someone is originally from nigeria or something and as a teenager moved to england and learned their ways and language, then obviously the accent would be picked up naturally.

but theres a difference when its completely put on in effort to build their character, which makes the whole thing so false.

But the parents dont even talk like this,

This is my point, often you hear white kids speaking in the same "gangsta" accent not just those from Afro-Caribbean or Asian backgrounds. The parents speak what I call "normally" yet the kids speak in this false, put on accent trying to be "cool". Why?

My father was from Clyde Bank near Glasgow. He had a strong accent all his life. I'm one of five kids and not none of us speaks with a Glaswegian accent. We were raised in Surrey so have more of a south London accent. Thus, I don't fall for the idea that the kids speak like this because that's how their parents speak. Besides, I hear almost no elderly Afro-Caribbean people speak with this stupid "gangsta" accent. It's totally put on and false.

If it's American why then do English kids try speaking with the accent? Makes no sense to me. Perhaps I should start speaking with a French accent, always loved the sound of French accents and the French are cool aren't they?

Why is it so hard for people to understand that someone from an estate in South/North London whatever is going to talk differently than someone living in Belgravia etc. It all comes down to surroundings. Same way someone from Buckinghamshire or Windsor will probably speak with an inflated posh accent. To the people who speak "Gangster" this would be seen as put on and probably fake.

Who are we to judge how someone else speaks? *shrug*

We have 7 year olds near me who talk this way all "Innit," shaking fingers like twats, if this was my child it would be nipped in the bud, but sadly ,this is chav culture,I may start talking in Italian accent as this is my fav ,but dont think a mix of Italian and broad Yorkshire would blend very well

Probably because half the kids today speaking with this ridiculous, fake, accent were not raised on estates in London. No, many are from posh or middle class backgrounds trying to look cool? Just like that idiot Aiden in Big Brother last year. From a good background yet spoke like a gangsta WHY?!

Agree, Aden is a classic example of a basically middle class kid trying to look cool but instead coming across as a total prat. I think the schools should refuse to speak to these kids if they speak this rubbish and nip it in the bud as soon as. It's ruining the English Language.

Harvey's voice is affected. I come from London, I know how proper Londoners speak, and that aint it. I know lots of kids who talk like that who's parents are proper Cockney, but the kids speak like little Jamaican gangsters because their friends do. I know black kids who speak like that who's parents speak with a proper east London accent, and more hilariously, I know white kids who speak like that who've never been twenty miles outside the capital.

Calling people idiots isn't the right way to go is it! I live in Cheshire and hear youngsters talk that way when they were born and bred here as were their parents and their parents before them.

Thats because they watch tv, or thEir friends consider it cool. We all went through that, and kids grow out of it, if its put on.

But I have no problems calling a spade, a spade.

BTW, you will find some interesting accent here!

I saw an interesting documentary about how the english language is dying because of slang. They took several cros sections from the US and analyzed language. Sampled Chicanos from Cali, Arizona and new mexico and ebonic samples from the north , New York, Pennsylvania etc.

Basically, The mexicans have mixed english and spanish to form practically an entire new language and the ebonics from the hood has become so popular and trendsetting that you even hear hollywood using it and even white conservatives... which sounds pathetic in them, not belivable at all. I hate when non hood peole talk hood, just doesnt make sense.

Not this nonsense again :(.

Accent has absolutely nothing to do with skin colour. If you're born in a particular region (or have lived there long enough) and hang out with people who have that regional accent, you'll pick up that regional accent. It's that simple. I'm guessing this guy is from Inner City London or Croydon, born and bred there and has hung around with people who speak 'Jafaican' (Multicultural London English, an accent that consists of West Indian toned down by remnants of Cockney).

There are plenty of black people with traditional, working class Cockney accents and plenty of whites who speak 'Jafaican' so that argument simply doesn't work.

To say otherwise - and even go on to call him a 'twat' because of his accent - would be ignorance I can only compare to thinking Canada is a small town in South Yorkshire.

Rubbish. Proper Londoners don't speak like gangsters!? It's an imported fad, fake and idiotic.
Rubbish. It's an actual London accent - most usually spoken by people under 30 from that area.
Exactly.
Its not"normal' its chav talk, no one is born talking like a twat
You are. It's a regional accent. It may have only evolved in the past 20 years but it's still a regional accent so I suggest you pick up a book and get your facts right before you start spouting ignorant, offensive bile on here.

In fact, all your posts on this thread have been so ill-informed that you sound more uneducated than you think these people you're describing do.

If it's an actual London accent, why is it that I can tell black people talking on the radio when they come out with that shi te accent?

It's horrendous.

So you're saying that being black people automatically rules them out for speaking with traditional London accents? Wow. You have a long way to go.

I've encountered loads of blacks who have Cockney accents and whites who speak 'Jafaican'. Different people have different accents. Smart people don't take to it automatically. Saying 'how cum I can tell blacks speaking on the radio' is not empirical evidence at all to speak for an entire race. Entirely anecdotal.

As for the 'it's horrendous' bit: so? I personally like the accents and find them quite colourful. It's all down to subjectivity and personal taste as to whether you like these accents but they are London accents. What if I said I don't like Cockney accents? Does that mean that I'd be absolutely justified and incisive in saying that they're not proper London accents?

Not all black people talk with that accent, though. Plenty of whites talk like that. As I said, skin colour doesn't come into accent at all. Fact. End. No discussion here. :idc:

When I listen to interviews on radio, it turns out 99% of the time that I can tell by the way they talk, whether they are white or black.

Sorry that goes against your theory.

Did you actually read my post? What about all the times I've heard white people with the exact same accents as you're describing? Or is that somehow different and are your personal experiences the only substantial ones?

No I'm not saying you're wrong on that basis. That's your personal experience, which is fine.

What you're wrong in is ascribing that accent towards all black people and I went on to counteract your ridiculous argument that usually only blacks talk like that by using my personal experience and actually substantiating my opinions with actual facts and statistics. I'm yet to see what justification you have for your argument, other than your own personal experience.

What's wrong with that is that there are probably just as many whites as blacks who talk like that so using your own personal experience to make that statement proves nothing. I refer you to the links I posted earlier on this page.

I don't even know where to start with that poorly-worded piece of nonsense. I would strongly encourage you to research accents in inner city London. This argument has been proven by statistics and extensive research by people qualified in the profession and I would suggest you understand the rudiments of the topic and no I'm not on about using your personal experience but obvious, proven data.

Your argument that in your personal experience people who talk like that are almost always black bore no contextual relation with the actual topic at hand.

In fact that argument can - and has been - completely counteracted and neutralised by anyone else's patented, individualised and personal experiences - and vice versa - which totally neutralises and obliterates your own argument?

And that's me done with you. You will undoubtedly find some way to distort and ignore the statistics I provide you and keep spouting the same crap, which makes arguing with you a pointless endeavor.

Any other attempt I try at making a coherent, logical argument will undoubtedly be dismissed by you in that oh-so-wonderful, smart tone in a desperate bid to make it look like you have the better of the situation when it just amounts to you overtly making the same ill-informed, pointless 'points' over and over and over again.

And yet, after all that drivel, I can still distinguish between a black guy and a white guy on radio.

It kind of makes your argument a pile of pish.

Sorry about that, Professor.
