Tony Nicklinson, the “locked-in” syndrome sufferer who challenged Britain’s laws on the right to die has passed away, his lawyers said.

Tony Nicklinson's death comes just days after he lost his High Court battle for an assisted suicide warning that he had been condemned to a life he said was worse than death.

In a short statement, his solicitors at the law firm Bindmans, said only that he had passed away at 10am this morning.

It was known that his health had deteriorated in recent weeks but the cause of his death has not been confirmed independently.

Further details will be released at a London press conference shortly.

At least he's in peace, just a shame he didn't get to do it on his terms.

Extremely sad, however also a relief for want of a better word that he has his wish at last.
Such a cruel blow was dealt to him when he took that that stroke. R.I.P.

This is very sad news, but he finally got his wish. And he is at peace.

I still hope his case does allow a law change in assisted suicide. People who are unable to do so SHOULD have the right to end their life.

He didn't get what he wanted, really :/ I don't see this as a victory at all, and the world still needs a massive shake-up on the right to determine your own life.

I agree with this bit. We should adapt Holland's approach to the government really. There's political correctness and there's being a total nut, which is what we have in this country as of present :(.

This.

It's sad that he couldn't do it the way he wanted to on his own terms.

It's horrible that he had to starve himself to death, which is a very painful way to die, instead of being allowed to have a comfortable death with the help of doctors.

I'm glad his suffering is finally over though. He was a truly brave soul.
