Woman Decapitates Son Before Killing Herself

An American woman has decapitated her two-year-old son before killing herself with a knife.

Chevonne Thomas, 33, called 911 initially blaming the killing on her boyfriend and then saying she had stabbed the child with a kitchen knife.

Police rushed to the scene in the early hours of Wednesday but withdrew while she was on the phone with emergency services.

They returned to find she had killed herself, said Camden County prosecutor Jason Laughlin.

"The police who arrived on the scene were traumatised by it," he said. "It has been very, very difficult for them."

Police found the body of the boy, Zahree, on the floor, and his head in the freezer where his mother had said it would be.

The child had been the subject of a custody order between his parents - his mother had lost custody of him in 2010 and had him returned in April of this year.

He was originally taken away from her after he was left alone in a car.

New Jersey officials revealed the woman had a history of mental health problems and substance abuse.

Just the other day I was watching a programme which was trying to uncover why mentally ill parents kill their children, and why it's more commonly women than men who do it..

i read about this the other day. horrible horrible tragedy. There's not much you can do about mental illness though. We can't just lock up everyone we think is crazy.

actually it's far more common for men to kill their wives than it is for women to kill their children.

Actually statistically the most dangerous place for any woman to be is in her own home with her own husband. By far the number one place for a homocide for a woman is being killed by her own husband in her own home.

Statistically a woman is safer in a dark alley than she is in her own home with her own husband. That's a fact.

It's beyond words, as well as the child I have so much sympathy for the police that discovered the scene. I can barely imagine the anguish and horror they must have felt coming across such a sight.
