"Police have warned residents to stay indoors after reports of a lion on the loose in Essex.
The large cat, believed to be a lion, was seen in fields off Earls Hall Drive in St Oysth, near Clacton, Essex, just before 7pm, police said.
Officers from Essex Police have been working with experts from Colchester Zoo who believe the reports to be genuine after being shown a photograph from a member of the public.
However police said the lion had not escaped from the zoo, as all its animals had been accounted for. It was not clear how old the lion was, officers added.
There is an increased police presence in the area, including firearms officers and the police helicopter searching near where the animal was spotted.
Police are also trying to establish where the lion may have come from and have urged anyone who sees the lion to call 999."

street killer - raw 27.08.12
on the streets is a killer,
Essex is on edge,
how are we going to clean this,
no good is MR Sheen or Pledge.
to powerful for any man,
bring in the machinery,
armed patrols everywhere,
is this going to end in misery.
neighborhoods are scared,
children must be in panic,
cancel all outside activity,
no Bank Holiday picnics.
if this is a hoax,
its costs are going to "flaw",
its a good idea for mass disruption,
looking for a make believe claw.
i am skeptical,
with this story i have little belief,
and if i don't get back from the Massi Mara,
please lay in St Oysth my R-i-P reef.
(like i say in my poem - i very much doubt if this is true - and if a lion is captured or destroyed i will glady say i was wrong. but until i see it - i don't believe it. but what do you think ? is a lion loose in Oysth Essex?)
No doubt it will be 'put down' due to someones carelessness
I hope not :(
I am from Essex, and was going to take a trip to Clacton the other day :o but opted for Southend in the end as it is closer.

Police in Essex investigating reports of a lion being spotted in a field have called off the search.
The animal was seen near Earl Hall Drive in St Osyth, near Clacton-on-Sea, by holidaymaker Bob Martin at about 19:00 BST on Sunday.
Mr Martin said he and his wife Denise saw a large cat and a lion "was the first thing that came to mind".
Police officers decided to call off the search on Monday after no trace of a big cat was found.
A police spokesman said: "We believe what was seen on Sunday evening was either a large domestic cat or a wildcat.
"Extensive searches have been carried out, areas examined and witnesses spoken to; yet nothing has been found to suggest that a lion was in the area."

After finally making sense of that, I somehow don't think that these people would be stupid enough to lie about something like this.

Is this the lion? Many Twitter users claimed TOWIE star Gemma Collins, pictured wearing fitting make-up, was actually the lion on the loose as hundreds of users posted their own version of the predator on the site
