Mods... instead of just shutting threads down when posters begin to attack someone en-masse with their nasty comments - why not deal with those posters - afterall, if it wasn't for such comments, there wouldn't be any need for threads to be shut down? :conf:

Usually they do just delete the offending posts and keep the thread open. That's my experience at least.

They usually only close threads if the OP is breaking the rules.
