If one of these things was to happen, which would you prefer?
Deaf I think... I don't think I could ever get used to having no sight and not seeing my kids etc ever again.

You've been deaf before? What happened?

I was born deaf but then I had a fair few operations to put some special implants in my ears so that I could hear.

Really? Thats amazing... do you hear perfectly now?

My hearing's around about average, perhaps a little less. It dips quite harshly when I'm ill though but I can hear fine most of the time.

Thats good! I think all mums to be worry about deafness and blinndess in their babies, but I honestly had no idea the could operate and give kids their hearing back! Amazing! :)
Deafinitely would rather lose my hearing

Only certain types of deafness mind. The implants I had wouldn't work on everyone. I was just lucky that mine was treatable.

blind. 100%
for so many reasons. communication is so audio based. I need to be able to talk to people and hear their response. I think sounds are so much more beautiful than sights.
I really don't understand why so many people would rather be deaf. To me it's an easy decision.
I could not live in silence. I hate silence. Silence scares me. I need sound far more than i need sight.
What a cheerful thread :idc:
I would rather go deaf though I hope I never have to experience either one.

I love silence.. not saying I would love it continually, but I think I could live with it easier than I could than living in darkness. Darkness scares me!

It would depend if you were born blind or deaf or both. You don't miss what you never had, and you would probably learn to interact with the world with whatever senses you were born with. However, if I were to lose my sight now, I don't think I could cope with life. At least with sight you get visual cues to help navigate the world. Being blind is a major handicap, being deaf is the lesser of two evils.

it wouldn't be real darkness though. the silence would be forever. no more music. no more talking, no sound ever again?? i'm sorry, that would be intolerable for me. you'd have to learn a whole new language, sign language, and almost nobody understands that language.
Atleast being blind, you could still communicate with everyone in english.
I definitely need sound and hearing and speech.
would you rather watch a TV show just the audio or just the video? I'd want the audio. you can still understand the story if you could only hear a TV show, watching a TV show without the sound, you'd have no idea what was going on, and you wouldn't understand the story at all.

i would go deaf as you can use sign or lip read, plus read and write also if you think about it!,we are not talking on this forum.

For all the world is filled with war and poverty and famine and cruelty and disaster, I still find it an amazingly beautiful place, and I haven't seen enough of it yet. I couldn't cope knowing that I'd never see a beautiful sight again or any of my loved ones faces.
We're all different though :)

i suppose it's like asking whether you'd rather lose your hands or your feet.
If you are a writer like stephen king, i'm sure he'd say his feet. but if you are a runner like usain bolt,. he'd probably say his hands.
you would miss seeing danica in nuts if you where blind.:joker:
Now, that's a good point!
But on the other hand, if I was deaf, I would never have to hear the likes of Cher Lloyd or Justin Bieber!

Yeah, I'd miss music.. I listen to music almost constantly.
In fact I think there should be a "neither" option in this poll. Deafness and blindness must be hellish!

When i die, i imagine sounds fill the afterlife, i think the visual aspect of human life will be largely irrelevant. That's just me though. I imagine sounds and feelings. I'm not very interested in the visual.

Aw,mine too! :( It was such a good film though considering it was filmed almost entirely in one room with just two actors! Kathy Bates was terrifying!

Think how much your life would have to change if you suddenly became blind though? Youre house would probably need adapted, you would need a dog, nipping down to the shop for cigarettes would become a big deal...
I've just thought of a story I read a while back of a woman who had been blind since birth and somehow got her sight back; she didn't know what anything was, and the only way she could tell, was to close her eyes and feel it. She said she was highly amused by noses! :)

it's really good. it's a period piece about women in the 30's in small town America. It's one of the few movies hollywood has ever made about lesbians, it was awesome. Idgy was amazing. you need to watch this movie. It's one of my top 3 movies.

At least if you're deaf you can still sorta do everything though and be fully independent, being blind would hinder so many more everyday activities

I went deaf in one ear when I was a kid and sometimes it can be really embarrasing, but thankfully i hear well in my other ear,but you do get to learn to lip read pretty well and I could not imagine the horror of being blind,so I'de rather be deaf anyday.

In the Netherlands, they provide someone to do that under the NHS, serious, sex workers are provided by their version of the NHS.

oh i disagree. never having to wipe my ass my self again sounds good to me. i hate wiping my ass. you never know when it's really clean. you look at the paper, and try to gauge how much is still coming off, but you never really get it perfectly clean. Let someone else deal with that i say.
I'd make them do a good job too. I'd be like let me see the paper,. let me inspect if it's clean enuf.
I'd be a very demanding boss. i want my ass clean!
