Prince Harry was at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan at the time of an attack by the Taliban in which two American marines were killed.

Nato told the Reuters news agency that the prince "was never in any danger".

US officials said small arms, rockets and mortars were used to attack the perimeter of the military base, home to troops from several countries.

Prince Harry, who is marking his 28th birthday, is on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan.

An earlier stint between 2007 and 2008 was cut short because his presence was leaked by the international media.

For this current deployment, however, the Ministry of Defence has made it clear it is happy to publicise Harry's role as he will be commanding an Apache helicopter and the threat to him is regarded as "low".

Friday's attack targeted the US compound, Camp Leatherneck, which forms one part of Camp Bastion.

There are fears of a surge in violence ahead of the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan by 2014.

Maj Martin Crighton from Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) told the BBC that the assault appeared to have been carried out by insurgents.

"Two Isaf service-members did die in the attack and currently the Isaf forces on the camp are conducting an assessment to determine the extent of the damage," he said.

The huge base has a high level of security and is one of the world's busiest airports because of the large number aircraft landing and taking off.

This is why royals shouldn't be in the military, they put everyone else around them and defending them at more risk.

His deployment there is going to cause heightened unnessesary risk to other soldiers there, isn't there a post in a less threatening country to place him on?

It was at Camp Bastion, the main British camp in Afghanistan home to nearly 30,000 people, it's an obvious target whether Harry's there or not

but they have extra incentive when they think that he's in the area of both camps. I'm sure all of those militants think of the "glory" of killing a prince. And their gonna be firing at every helicopter they can thinking they might be killing Prince Harry. They know it would be a major media and propaganda coup if they did kill him. I'm sure they'd all like to be the guy that killed the British Prince.

the monarchy is an out dated joke that represents nothing or nobody. it costs us a fortune, it distracts us from whats important and now again its costing lives too. if harry or any of these spoiled children want to play with guns, let him deliver weapons or aid or do somehting 100% undercover out of the way. to think we are risking and losing lives simply to let him have a go near the front line , is beyond disgusting. obviously the endless hype about him and where he will be stationed creates enemies, creates atention and gives the enemies more targets. how would you feel if youre on the front line and every news station in the world is reporting that prince harry is coming to join your front line? guess what the next day youve got a lot more bullets heading your way

disgusting, sick of their greed

Theyre greedy and putting other peoples lives at unnecessary risk. harry if he wants to help should be used in the background more, carrying facilities , weaponry, food, ammunition, aid etc Theres plenty to do, rather than be in the firing line. the palace should also quit hyping up harry and hyping his role in these wars. all it does is embolden the enemy and given them more targets. its mindless, all to appease the ego of the monarchy. now people are dead because of their egos. almost every war has started as a result of the monarchy. including world war 1. theyre warmongers and they represent nothing

LOL :joker:
I cant even take that as a serious post.

Would you feel better if the Monarchy were sat at home just telling us all what a jolly good job everybody else was doing or if they were setting an example by putting their lives on the line as well?

They generate a hell of a lot more money than they cost to keep how does that make them greedy?

How on earth did the monarchy start a war in Afghanistan?

What has the palace (what palace btw?) done to hype up Harry? (he is doing a great job of endearing himself as it is)

What part of the monarchy is trying to hype up Harry?

Sounds like a load of angry baseless tripe to me there is nothing wrong with being angry about an issue but when you dont back it up it just looks like you are bitter about something and lashing out at anything you can to try and make yourself feel better.

read your history dtop pretending to be so dumb. the first world war started as a result of the monarchy. as did almost every other preceeding war. thats historical fact. 2 soldiers have died partly as a result of harry being stationed there and the hype surorunding his stationing. there are loads of jobs he could do in the army without the hype of being near the front line. as Ive stated 4 times, yet youve chosen to ignore. he could help in loads of areas, including, moving equipment, armour, weaponry, food, aid, he could even try and join the intelligence. theres no need for him to be front line and all the hype that goes with it. your response is petty childish and embarassing. in light of the fact 2 brave men have died, you should wind your neck in and show respect.

I guess people are going to say two Royal Marines have died because Harry is at Camp Bastion. Of course, he wasn't there when all the other soldiers died... and there's nothing - nothing - to suggest those Royal Marines are dead because of Harry's presence.

army commanders have stated this has endangered the soldiers lives and the taliban have stated that they were deliberately targetting the camp due to harrys arrival. Its blatantly obvious to anyone, harry and the harry hype creates a bigger target
