I have always had this fascination with Tornadoes ever since encountering one in the UK a few years ago. I love watching footage of them and just came across some of a fire tornado which is pretty cool.

I've always had a fear of them. I'd call it an irrational one but, uh, they rip **** up, so it's perfectly rational :p

..I saw this on another site...it's amazing in a terrifying sort of way......

An astonished filmmaker is coming to grips with the moment he witnessed one of nature's rarest phenomenons - a tornado comprised entirely of fire- and lived to tell the tale.

Chris Tangey had been out in Alice Springs, Australia, scouting locations for a new movie.

After finishing the task, he went over to help workers at a cattle station when he was confronted by one of nature's most intimidating spectacles

Just 300-metres away was a 30-metre high fire swirl which 'sounded like a fighter jet' despite there being no wind in the area.

SCIENCE BEHIND THE STORM

These fire tornadoes are a natural rarity, but when they occur they predictably cause significant damage.

A fire tornado, also know as a fire devil, is caused when a column of warm, rising air comes into contact - or causes - a fire on the ground.

They are known to last for around two minutes on the very rare occasions they take place.

These fire whirls are known to last for around two minutes on the very rare occasions they take place.

But Mr Tangey found himself mesmerized by the tornado for more than 40 minutes.

The 52-year-old said: 'The weather was perfectly still and it was about 25 degrees celsius - it was an entirely uneventful day.

'Then the next thing a man is yelling 'what the hell is that?' and I turned around and saw a 30-metre fire tornado.

'I was about 300-metres away and there was no wind but the tornado sounded like a fighter jet. My jaw just dropped.'

Mr Tangey, who runs Alice Springs Film and Television, in central Australia, described it as a 'once in ten lifetimes experience'

Nature is so fascinating. What bravery must have taken him to walk into the fire.

Communities braced for Cyclone Rusty as 125mph winds batter Australian coast

Fierce winds and heavy rains uprooted trees, closed schools and ports and brought fears of flooding as Cyclone Rusty neared the Australian coast.

Communities on the west coast of Australia are bracing themselves for a powerful cyclone with destructive winds of up to 125mph and lashing rains.

Forecasts of up to 600mm (24in) of rain have brought fears of flooding to affected towns.

Residents of Port Hedland, the world's biggest mining port, have been collecting supplies and food and many have been evacuated.

The town is in the path of Cyclone Rusty - a category four storm out of a rating of five.

The slow-moving weather system has already battered the coast with lashing winds of 75mph for several days

A red alert has been issued for Port Hedland and communities in the path of the storm are expected to experience dramatic weather conditions for up to 36 hours.

Shops at Port Hedland have been boarded up, and the town's sea port was shut down ahead of the storm's arrival.

Australia's three main iron ore ports, Port Hedland, Dampier and Cape Lambart, have all been been closed, bringing the trade of half the world's seaborne iron ore to a halt.

As the storm moved towards the coast, residents of Port Hedland felt relief as news they would be spared the worst of the storm spread.

But nearby Pardoo will face the brunt of the cyclone, and its residents have been told to stay sheltered until Friday.

NASA's TRMM satellite flew over Rusty on Tuesday and recorded rainfall of over 138mm per hour.

Rusty is the fourth cyclone to form during Australia's 2012-13 "cyclone season" which runs from November to the end of April.

There are typically 11 cyclones per season off Australia northwest and northeast coasts

Natural phenomenons are so interesting to watch videos of and read stories about... definitely something morbid about that  I'd **** myself if anything like that ever happened where I live!
