I dunno, Romney seemed a bit more mudslingy than Obama, it all felt a bit cheap and his answers to some questions were vague (the partisan politics one towards the end, for example)... but overall he came off really well. Won't win, though.

I was a bit disappointed in Obama tonight, he wasn't aggressive enough and ultimately it appeared as if he was "walked over" by Romney. Romney spoke pretty damn well but at the same time there was something about him that was sly and sleazy. There's something about him I don't trust.

It really doesnt matter who is elected.

Americas withdrawal from Iraq wasnt anything to do with job complete or a response to calls to bring them home it was forced upon them just by asking them to abide by the law and stop breaking the law.
From a CNN report on why the Iraqi Government rejected the Obama administration’s conditions for keeping U.S. troops in Iraq beyond the 2011 deadline:

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and other top brass have repeatedly said any deal to keep U.S. troops in Iraq beyond the withdrawal deadline would require a guarantee of legal protection for American soldiers.

But the Iraqis refused to agree to that, opening up the prospect of Americans being tried in Iraqi courts and subjected to Iraqi punishment.

The negotiations were strained following WikiLeaks’ release of a diplomatic cable that alleged Iraqi civilians, including children, were killed in a 2006 raid by American troops rather than in an airstrike as the U.S. military initially reported.

That description from CNN of the cable’s contents is, unsurprisingly, diluted to the point of obfuscation. That cable was released by WikiLeaks in May, 2011, and, as McClatchy put it at the time, “provides evidence that U.S. troops executed at least 10 Iraqi civilians, including a woman in her 70s and a 5-month-old infant, then called in an airstrike to destroy the evidence, during a controversial 2006 incident in the central Iraqi town of Ishaqi.” The U.S. then lied and claimed the civilians were killed by the airstrike. Although this incident had been previously documented by the U.N. special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, the high-profile release of the cable by WikiLeaks generated substantial attention (and disgust) in Iraq, which made it politically unpalatable for the Iraqi government to grant the legal immunity the Obama adminstration was seeking. Indeed, it was widely reported at the time the cable was released that it made it much more difficult for Iraq to allow U.S. troops to remain beyond the deadline under any conditions

Agree. Obama always seems ready to roll up his sleeve, or have a dance... you know what I mean? He seems more... human, more grounded. Romney on the other hand seems like the stereotypical rich American politician. Mr Plastic Permatan.

Obviously Romney will always have the advantage in debates, because Obama has been president for 4 years, so he can't use the excuse "i'll change things if i'm elected", cause the automatic response is "well you are already president, so why havn't you done it yet?". Obama is automatically on the defensive.

Niamh.
04-10-2012, 10:47 AM
I feel bad for Obama though, he became president at the worst possible time, when almost the whole world is in recession, I don't believe any president could have made things much better at that particular time.

I watched the first hour of it, I don't think either were all that impressive, Romney's answers seemed quite scripted and he looked like he was constantly a bit concerned he was about to mess up, Obama was a bit more enigmatic and natural but I didn't think he got the better of Romney in terms of policy or content of his answers

obama did muhammad ali's rope-a- dope (ali played the sleeping elephant to george foreman, he hang on the ropes for 8 rounds they countered when george was exposed and tired) so romney did perform slightly better overall and won the first round, but is it a hollow victory?...I think the main reasons is as follows

1) hes been electioneering for the last 6 months, obama hasnt, so romney was more match sharp
2) romney is very good at his talking points and he went through them all.
3) Obama doesnt like confrontation. however Id suggest in his pracice for the next one, he needs his staff to grill him thoroughly and get him match fit
4) romney game out aggressive and guns blazing as thechallenger long way behind and with nothing to lose. obama was defensive, playing a safe game and didnt take risks.
5) romney got aggressive stared down obama and said I dont know what youre talking about (re jobs overseas) he also claimed obama put 90 billion in green energy (way inaccurate) and also accused him of letting his own backers invest in these failing green companies. these were blows to win romney to win the debate, but long term, it made romney look ruthless, aggressive, arrogant and a bit unpresidential.
6) obama is biding his time. he did the same with john mccain, he picked him off slowly but surely
7) I was disappointed obama didnt counter more of mitts points about how much tax americans are paying and why. the figure of 42% was bandied about.
8) healthcare, id give it to obama though. obamacare is almost a replica of romney care. romney tried desperately to paint the differences but it failed. romney wants to totally dismantle obamacare, not tweak it. romney doesnt say anywhere what he would replace it with? so there goes 40 million voters to obama. This shows romney says too many radical things to play to his right wing audience. it gets him a cheer in texas, but the cheer fades in other states.

9) beneath the headline grabbing nonsense about obama being stared down. obama was playing counter attack. he wanted to give romney enough rope to hand himself.for romney to make big bold claims such as his 12 million new jobs claim? 12 million really? is that new or net , mittt?

10) obama made great points about tax breaks and incentives for small to medium businesses. that doesnt get the major headlines, but I found that exciting as he reshapes the economy. he also correctly claimed the oil production is up too. to be honest I am not a socialist so I dont like to see too much government interference and government jobs. however regulation of these enormous industries must be tight and must be open and ethical.

11) romney mocked obamas 4/5 trillion debts. obama explained clearly where that came from. obama made it clear as he has already stated, where the next 4 trillion will be saved. 2 trillion less military spending than romney wants (romney again failed to explain why he wants an extra 2 trillion military spending?) obama rightly said hes gone after corporate corruption imposing massive fines and he has and he has in law that every cent leant to the banks will be repaid with interest , on time, or theyll face fines. this has also been the case. he should have mentioned the dow jones is the highest since 2003
12) romney scored with some headline grabbing claims and with his aggressive posturing. personally I think all that aggression and staring down the opponent is pathetic and is better off in the bar room than a debate. obama was merely making notes. that seems to matter to simple minded people who want to see aggression.

He strikes me as a dangerous man. yes a good speaker when hes on message , but prone to radical statements. hes frighteningly slick and appears quite ruthless. I dont think he has to worry about the 47% working class as he wouldnt relate to most of them imho....romney won this battle, but he will probably lose the war

Americans UnEmployed

He's had 4 years

america was already in a phenomenal mess. he arrived to 11 trillion debts, with another 2 more trillion need to bail the banks, a trillion to save the autom motor industries and a trillion to save healthcare, thats before you even consider 2 unwinnable , partly illegal wars? also th efact america (and the UK) had become the most hated on the planet, thta is also a factor which cannot be ignored as you try to build relations worldwide in trade, peace deals, war, etc

the uemployment rate looks to be down to 7.9/8.1% as will be shown friday
but the fundamentals are better as obama has made massively brave responsible moral decisions and investments, in roads, industries, in regulating banks and real estate, plus exiting iraq and slowly exiting afghanistan, retail sales are way up year on year over the last 3 years, plus saving the motor car industries, increasing exportsand raising the level of the down jones to a 9 year high. also the fact is 40 to 50 million more poor americans now have a basic level of healthcare , this goes for pre-existing conditions too. that is beyond enormous. he has stated clearly where 4 trillion savings are expected to come. he is reducing military spending by 2 trillion less than romney, hes scrapped the most unproductive government projects such as buying out dated weapons and helicopters....hes shed a lot of over burocratised inefficient government jobs....hes also given up the europe wide defense system too....stem cell reaserch has had more money and hes invested in new energies....brave, clean optimistic choice that will benefit america in the long term

its the "of course" bit that disturbs the most

the trouble with the left in the past few years is they havent managed to verbally sell socialism or left wing policies, why? they cant seem to construct a vision that promotes redistribution, regulation corprate companies and monopolies and stimulates small business

why arent they selling it? if one was super cynical youd guess the rich put up blair, brown as fall guys to kill socialism.

"I don't look at my pension it's not as big as yours so it doesn't take as long. I don't check it that often."

Kills him again :worship:How would he know that if he hadnt studied both his own and Romneys? or did he just make it up to win a bitchpoint? either way he was dishonest.
Hollow nothing but a childish retort is that what people are supposed to base their vote on really! both these guys are pretty pathetic.

It frightens me its like kids scrapping in the playground while the adults sit inside unelected and untouchable making the decisions that really effect the years ahead and yes that includes the UK party leaders as much as the US candidates.

CNN's post-debate poll gives it to Obama by 46% to 39%.

Hmm. 15% is an awful lot of undecideds. Surely at this stage in the game you'd either know which party you prefer, or know yourself to be above this whole partisan system and have affirmed yourself as a non-voter

The empire strikes back, obama owned romney this time around. he wasway more detailed and specific and had a joined up reasoned argument on every topic....romney is just a load of contradicting sweeping statements, but when he gets down to detail and policy, he makes absolutely no sense

the fact he keeps say how awesome he was running massuchusettes, is laughable, hes 20% behind in massuchusettes, thats how much they love him...hes flip flopping on everything from abortion to taxation to healthcare....his foreign policy is a joke, hes just a voice piece for fox news now, theres nothing left of the original mitt romney

good , people need to be lectured too

I love obama and what I lovemost about him, is that ultimately he wants to get past all this poison and finger pointing and he actually does want a fairer more balanced cleaner healther better america and better world.....the naysayers, the 24 hour news sickos who create controversy every minute of their sad lives, do not want a better peaceful world. all they care about is todays sensationalized headlines. obama has a long game. hes a great man and you can just tell he will be glad when this blame game nonsense is all over and he can go back to rebuilding america

Obama! What a legend! :worship::worship::worship:

even when hes angry hes cool as heck
at one point he said to romney about the libyan embassy attacks,

"I said in the rose garden its an act of terror, to think myself or any of my staff would wish to play politics or mislead when weve lost 4 of our own, is offensive".

romney duly tried to contradict him and say o bama had never said it was an act of terror for 14 days after the attack, obama cool as heck says, please proceed, read the transcript...

also did you notice he slipped and said OBAMA bin laden when talking about osama bin laden? lol i love old people.

I think the line of the night went to Obama though. Romney was talking about increasing the military and that America had the least amount of ships since 1947 and he would build more ships.... Obama came back and said "yea, well our military also has less horses and bayonets" lol.

and he's right, it's like how is more ships going to help fight against muslim terrorists? The Islamaists don't have a navy, they hide in the freaking desert, so how would more ships help fight against terrorism?? lol
