The former newspaper proprietor Eddy Shah has appeared at the Old Bailey charged with raping a schoolgirl in the 1990s.

Mr Shah, 68, who appeared under his real name of Selim Shah, was released on bail for a plea and case management hearing on 7 December.

Mr Shah, of Chippenham, Wiltshire, faces six counts of rape involving a girl under 16.

The former media boss owned the now defunct Today newspaper in the 1980s.

He now owns and runs golf courses, leisure centres and hotels including Wiltshire Golf and Country Club in Royal Wootton Bassett.

Mr Shah appeared in court with Anthony Pallant, 52, of West Malling, Kent, who is charged with two counts of raping a girl under 16.

He pleaded not guilty to four counts of indecent assault.

Susan Davies, 52, of Swanley, Kent, pleaded not guilty to allegations including indecent assault.

They were bailed until 7 December. A trial is due to take place next year.

Former newspaper owner Eddy Shah had sex with a schoolgirl in various hotel rooms, a court has been told.

The Old Bailey heard he engaged in sexual acts with the teenager, and was with prostitute Susan Davies as he did.

The abuse took place in the early 1990s but the girl waited about 20 years to tell police, the jury heard.

Mr Shah, 69, Ms Davies and her former partner Anthony Pallant deny charges including rape, child cruelty and indecent assault.

Gillian Etherton, QC, prosecuting, said Ms Davies was "bullying and controlling" towards the schoolgirl.

"She is a woman of few moral scruples," Miss Etherton said.

The complainant told police she was taken by Ms Davies to a hotel to meet Mr Shah when she was 14.

The girl was warned to do what she was told, the court heard.

"Thereafter, and always in hotels, sexual acts took place between Eddy Shah, Susan Davies and the girl," said Miss Etherton.

"She said she had to deal with it so she became robotic."

The girl said the last time she had sex with Mr Shah was when she was 15, the jury was told.

Miss Etherton said Ms Davies had an affair with Mr Pallant and had become "obsessed" with him.

She had allegedly used the girl as a "bargaining object" to maintain her affair.

Mr Shah, of Chippenham, Wiltshire, denies six counts of raping a girl under 16.

Anthony Pallant, 53, of West Malling, Kent, denies six counts of rape and indecent assault.

Susan Davies, 53, of Swanley, Kent, denies 14 charges including aiding and abetting rape, indecent assault and child cruelty.

Former newspaper boss Eddy Shah "never touched" a young girl he is accused of raping, a co-defendant has told jurors.

Former escort Susan Davies, who is accused of providing a teenage girl for sex, told the Old Bailey Mr Shah had no sexual activity with the complainant.

Ms Davies and her former lover, Anthony Pallant, deny charges including rape and child cruelty.

Ms Davies, 53, of Swanley, Kent, denies 14 counts of aiding and abetting rape, indecent assault and child cruelty.

She told the court she took the teenage girl to meet Mr Shah, from Chippenham in Wiltshire, at hotels in London because he was a "gentleman" and could have a positive influence on the teenager.

"With hindsight it was a stupid decision," she said.

Ms Davies's barrister Paul Jackson asked her: "Was there any sexual activity with her on either occasion?"

"No, not at all, it didn't happen," she replied.

The court heard Mr Shah paid Ms Davies as an escort for several years but she discounted the business aspect of the relationship.

She said: "He bought me a Pierre Cardin watch for my birthday. I didn't think of myself as an escort after that.

"I was a friend of his and he was a wealthy man and I wasn't and I thought he was helping me. I didn't feel he treated me like an escort."

Ms Davies also denied providing the girl for sex to her former lover Mr Pallant, who denies six counts of rape and indecent assault.

It is alleged Mr Pallant, 53, of West Malling in Kent, abused the girl in hotels and his flat but in court Ms Davies said: "It's not true, it never happened."

As well as founding the now defunct Today newspaper, Mr Shah now owns and runs golf courses, leisure centres and hotels.

The trial will resume on Friday morning.
