Five suspected terrorists including Abu Hamza al-Masri can be extradited to the US, ending a long legal battle, UK High Court judges have ruled.

The radical cleric, Babar Ahmad, Syed Talha Ahsan, Adel Abdul Bary and Khaled al-Fawwaz failed to show "new and compelling" reasons not to send them.

Their appeal came after the European Court of Human Rights backed successive UK courts in ruling for extradition.

Judges said their extradition "may proceed immediately".

The Home Office has said will try to deport them "as quickly as possible".

Judges Sir John Thomas and Mr Justice Ousley said in their ruling that there was an "overwhelming public interest in the functioning of the extradition system" and that there was "no appeal from our decision".

The written ruling, read out in court, concluded that "each of the claimants' applications for permission to apply for judicial review or for a re-opening of the statutory appeals be dismissed".

"It follows that their extradition to the United States of America may proceed immediately."

Of Abu Hamza, whose lawyers argued he may not be fit to face trial on medical grounds, they said: "The sooner he is put on trial the better".

The judges rejected a plea by Abu Hamza to delay his extradition so he could undergo an MRI brain scan which, his lawyers said, could show he was unfit to plead because of degenerative problems.

The 54-year-old, a former imam at Finsbury Park mosque, north London, was suffering from chronic sleep deprivation and depression as a result of eight years in prison, his lawyers added.

The BBC's Dominic Casciani, at the High Court, said the British government had got the result it had wanted to see for eight years.

Great news:).

Yes... I know... it's just that the whole extradition process is so time-consuming, it's ridiculous. In these days of instant electronic transfer, he should have been out of the country and on a plane to the US about ten minutes after they asked for him.

Yes, I heard he was ill. Nothing trivial, I hope.

Whole thing has been a bit of a farce, seems that tends to be the case with extraditions

The plane should have been waiting for the announcement of this verdict and then have him straight on it.
Hopefully no more delays of any kind can surely arise now.

It's the ridiculous pc world we live in. Regardless of what he has done he has to be given a fair hearing so his human rights are not infringed.... Crazy world

Good result though...hopefully he will now be punished for his crimes

Sorry...am I reading this right? It's crazy that we assume people are innocent until proven guilty, have a right to a fair trial and that we protect and uphold people's human rights regardless of who they are and what they have done (as is the safest, most sensible system)?

Like...seriously? You want that abolished?

The only one making a bomb now is his lawyer.

Just one more... He looks like a Swiss Army terrorist.

Right that's it. I'm out.

He can try out for the Guantanemo Waterboarding Team. Not as much fun as it sounds.

He's wanted in the US on terror-related charges. Not sure about the death penalty... I could care less, but not much less.

Not before time. Funny how he loathed Britain and what it stood for, but then squeeled like a baby when getting kicked out and sent to the land that doesn't faff around with his sort.

No...you have misunderstood and maybe I haven't been clear. Of course I do not want that abolished. What I was replying to was the time it has taken to get to this point with all the appeals etc. I think the guy should be held accountable but I also think of hs victims human rights too and resent my money as a tax payer going to his lawyers as they try to avoid the charges he faces in the us
