Police said the plant, which they seized from the couple's Bedford home, was the biggest they had seen.
The couple, who were simply looking for a pot plant at the boot sale, were shocked to find that the shrub they had been cultivating was in fact a giant cannabis plant, which had taken over a large area of the suburban garden.
Following the raid on the elderly couple's home, Bedfordshire Police took to Twitter to comment on their find and posted a photo of the bush growing in what looks like an ordinary suburban garden.
'Seized today. Elderly couple bought shrub at car boot sale, tended carefully-biggest cannabis plant we had seen!!' it read.
A spokesman for the police said the couple had requested the image be removed from the social networking site. It is unclear whether or not the pair will be charged over the cannabis plant.
Bedfordshire Police were also faced with claims that a lion was roaming around the area today.
Despite recent sightings of a lion in Essex sparking a major search, the police in Bedford took a more laid back approach confirming there was no ongoing incident.
