I was thinking that at first but nearer the end he starting looking a bit more genuine, possibly shock to start with?

I wasn't sold on it. I don't think it's real. The set up was so unbelievable. The meteor explosions right in front of the bus right while they are listening to the story on the radio. Also i noticed that the place they used for this was the same place they filmed that show Space Cadets.
