Corrie heartbreak: Julie Goodyear reveals pal Bill Tarmey had a stroke as he watched bullies attack her on Big Brother

Furious Bill Tarmey had a stroke two months ago as he watched pal Julie Goodyear being bullied on Celebrity Big Brother.

Fellow Coronation Street legend Julie said Bill, who played Jack Duckworth for 30 years, called her from his hospital bed in September.

She added: "Bill called to tell me how angry he was at how I was treated in the house."

Devastated Julie, 70, found out soon after from Bill's wife Alma that he was taken ill because he was so upset.

Julie, who played barmaid Bet Lynch for more than 25 years, said: "He was really very worried about me. I was at home when he called. I'd left Big Brother.

"I didn't know then but he was recovering from a stroke.

"After our phonecall, where Bill sounded so sad, Alma told me he had actually had a stroke watching me on the show.

"His worry, the fact he was so protective of me, put him in hospital," she added.

"I was so worried. I'd been worried for his health for a long time. I reassured him I was fine, told him I was home and OK but he was still worrying for me.

"I told him I could look after myself but Bill always worried about his friends."

Bill, 71, was found dead in bed by wife Alma at his Tenerife holiday home on Friday.

Funeral Last night, heartbroken Alma - known as Ali - son Carl, 46, and his wife Sandra flew back from Tenerife to prepare for Bill's funeral.

His body is due to be flown back early this week. Bill also has a daughter Sara, 42, and seven grandchildren.

Family friend Vernon Harris said of Bill's death: "Ali slept on the sofa, Bill wasn't well.

"She woke up and couldn't hear him. She went in and he was dead. It is such a shock."

Bill has suffered agonising ill health for years including a huge heart attack in 1976 followed by a stroke a year later and quintuple bypass surgery in 1986. In tourist resort Puerto Colon, Bill's local pub The Old Lodge was shut for a second day yesterday.

"Owner and pal David Taylor has put up a sign saying: "Closed due to bereavement."

His wife Geraldine said: "We are devastated.

"He had not been well in England and was enjoying a short 10-day holiday here with his family to try to recuperate a bit with the better climate, but it all happened so quickly."

One of Bill's neighbours said: "I last saw him on Wednesday and he didn't look well.

"He was in his motorised scooter and he had big bags under his eyes.

"It was the first time I had seen him in a while."

Liz Dawn, who played onscreen wife Vera, said yesterday: "I'm devastated, he was a lovely man. He was kind and generous. Bill was part of my family."

I would say that if Bill had worries, it is more likely family worries that would or could have contributed to his death not worry over Julie so much. Found the following news item (http://menmedia.co.uk/manchestereveningnews/news/s/1416454_coronation-street-star-bill-tarmeys-close-shave-for-son-battling-cancer) on Bill from last year. I like Julie, but she is milking it a bit in that news article, though news items can tend to spin stuff for a bigger reaction.

Absolutely sick making his death all about her.

If anyone was in any doubt about what kind of person she is, this clearly says it all.

I am just watching the latest CBBUK series(waited for the return of Australia's BB to finish before starting the last CBBUK)and I have to say, this vile old ****** is one of THE WORST people I have EVER seen!

She is a back-stabbing, vile, snakey gossiper who took people aside and tried getting them onside, while claiming SHE was the victim and rubbing the backs of all the people she was back-stabbing while crooning in their ears, "You know I love ya, doncha???"

Go away and die, you vile old bitch.

Marsh, I could not agree more, how disrespectful when the attention should be about Bill Tarmey being greived for and given a good send off by his family, friends, colleagues and the public.

I liked her character in Corrie and always remained impartial to the numerous rumours I had read about her on the net over the years RE being a diva with a big ego behind the scenes at Corrie and in RL, but when she went in CBB I realised it was true by how she behaved.
