View Full Version : Australia smokers given plain packs

Australia has become the first country in the world to introduce plain packaging for cigarettes.

From now, all tobacco company logos and colours will be banned from packets.

They have been replaced by a dreary, uniform, green/brown, colour accompanied by a raft of anti-smoking messages and photographs.

The only concession to the tobacco companies is their name and the name of the brand variant in small print at the bottom of the box.

"This is the last gasp of a dying industry," declared Australia's Health Minister Tanya Plibersek.

Anne Jones of the anti-smoking group Ash (Action on Smoking and Health) agrees.

"Plain packaging has taken the personality away from the pack", she says.

"Once you take away all the colour coding and imagery and everything is standardised with massive health warnings, you really do de-glamorise the product."

Cigarette packets were practically the last platform for tobacco companies to advertise themselves.

Commercials on Australian television and radio were banned in 1976. Newspapers followed in 1989.

Sadly can see this happening over here soon :(

So I guess the debate is, do you think plain packets will put people off smoking?

Glenn.

No. The fact is, if someone wants to smoke then they will. This bollocks about "pretty" boxes is ridiculus. Underage smokers don't buy cigarettes because the box is pretty. It's because they think its cool to smoke.

I guess they're just trying to make them harder to get so no new smokers start. No logo and locked in the box of doom behind the co-op counter. Although I do think it's gonna make kids wonder even more what's behind the secret door of mystery...

I said this previously in another thread, but here I go again... Do people buy drugs because they come in nice packages with recognisable logos? No, they don't.

Most places I go in now they are already, it's only the small shops that have been given a few years to get it sorted.

The whole argument annoys me so much. Why do you care what someone else chooses to put inside their body? Let them smoke all the nicotine they want...it's no one else's business.

The vast majority of smokers are very aware of others and would never light up inconsiderately. I see no problem with people smoking outside. Cigarette smoke is no more toxic that carbon monoxide but I don't see a ban on driving cars coming in any time soon.

Once smokers are banned, how will they make up the £12 billion raised in the UK from tobacco tax in the last year? If people want to smoke that's their own business. God knows they pay enough for the privilege.

Why? Because you don't approve of their lifestyle? Let them do what they want - that's not for you or anyone else to decide.

And, no, it doesn't mean you have to be a total idiot and get yourself killed. You can just walk past me. Stop being pedantic about things. I hate people always moaning about smokers.

There's gonna be a point where people rebel. It's getting quite ridiculous now, it's just an excuse to raise the price on everything. Take the alcohol thing for example, pretending to care about our health when really it's about more money.

The whole argument annoys me so much. Why do you care what someone else chooses to put inside their body? Let them smoke all the nicotine they want...it's no one else's business.

The reason it affects me is because I hate seeing my friends smoke themselves away, but you are right. Last night I said 'do it if you wish, I'm going to stop going on, just cut the 'I'm going to quit' bull-**** please'.

And I don't think it's right for them to be packaged this way, you don't see a person with liver disease displayed on a bottle of vodka. People will smoke no matter what the packaging, they care about what's in the box.

Why all the what if's?
If cigarettes ceased to exist and in their place was an alternative that satisfied your craving would you be happy to use the substitute?
No more feeling anti-social standing outside the party?
No more yellow fingers?
I think it's a brill idea :)

Lots of people die on the roads every year and the toxic fumes from cars is deadly perhaps we should think about banning them. What's more, the driver, like the smoker, is taxed to the hilt already. Maybe we should produce bottles of wine carrying pictures of livers with sclerosis and mutilated accident victims after a drunk driver has hit them. Why stop at smokers?

It's amusing that some people are all for government intervention and dictation when it suits their own agenda.

Nicotine gum is hardly likely to give smokers the same feeling that they would get through smoking a cigarette, nor would any other of these crappy, ineffective alternatives.

As I've said over and over again on this thread: IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.

And if you're willing to make smoking illegal would you support throwing someone in prison just because they want to put a bit of nicotine into their system? Because if you do then your logic is totally flawed and I actually can't take you seriously.

It's all to make people think they're actually doing something about people smoking. When in reality it's just a massive waste of time and very pointless.

I don't see the problem with it....
fair play to them, if you take a substance as detrimental to health as nicotine... It is unethical not to ban it.
How will they cope without the revenue?...
( i'm sure their government cares more than ours to make provision)
What about alcohol!!!!
( thats a separate issue)
