Max Clifford ‘arrested on suspicion of sexual offences by Jimmy Savile detectives’

PR consultant Max Clifford has been arrested by detectives investigating claims of sexual abuse against late TV and radio presenter Jimmy Savile, it has been reported.

The 69-year-old, from Surrey, is said to have been arrested this morning at his Surrey home on suspicion of sexual offences by police on Scotland Yard’s Operation Yewtree, which is investigating claims of sexual abuse involving Savile and others.

The Metropolitan police would only confirm a man in his 60s had been arrested in Surrey and was being questioned in a central London police station.

The arrest is also not directly linked to any claims involving Savile, who died in October 2011 aged 84.

‘Officers working on Operation Yewtree have this morning arrested a man in his 60s in connection with the investigation,’ a statement said.

‘The man from Surrey was arrested at 7:40am on suspicion of sexual offences and has been taken into a central London police station.

‘The individual falls under the strand of the investigation we have termed “others”. We are not prepared to discuss further.’

Scotland Yard is leading the national probe into claims made against disgraced TV presenter and radio DJ Savile.

Before today, four people had been arrested and five questioned in connection with Yewtree’s investigations.

Last week a man in his 80s from Berkshire was interviewed by detectives as part of the investigation not directly relating to Savile himself.

Gary Glitter, comedian Freddie Starr, DJ Dave Lee Travis and a man in his 70s understood to be former TV producer Wilfred De’Ath have all already been arrested and bailed.

The controversial then boss of Harrods Mohamed Fayed retained Max Clifford Associates in July 2000 to 'polish up' his image. After having paid the politician Neil Hamilton to ask questions in the House of Commons in the now notorious 'cash-for-questions' scandal, Fayed and Hamilton became high profile enemies when the latter revealed the fact during a court case. Shortly after Fayed retained Clifford, Hamilton and his wife Christine were both arrested on rape charges which were later found to be false.

In 2005 Clifford paid an undisclosed sum in libel damages to Neil and Christine Hamilton after he had represented Nadine Milroy-Sloan, who was convicted of attempting to pervert the course of justice after fabricating rape allegations against Hamilton. Clifford did not face any criminal charges over the case.

PR guru Max Clifford has been charged with 11 indecent assaults allegedly committed between 1966 and 1985.

The alleged offences relate to seven different women and girls ranging in age from 14 to 19 years old.

Mr Clifford, 70, from Hersham, Surrey says the claims are "completely false"; he will appear in court next month.

Mr Clifford was not charged over three further allegations as there was "insufficient evidence to authorise charges", the Crown Prosecution Service said.

Mr Clifford denied the allegations against him.

He said: "The allegations in respect of which I have been charged are completely false and I have made this clear to the police during many, many hours of interviews.

"Nevertheless a decision has been taken to charge me with 11 offences involving seven women, the most recent of which is 28 years ago and the oldest 47 years ago.

"I have never indecently assaulted anyone in my life and this will become clear during the course of the proceedings."

Scotland Yard said he was charged after answering bail at a London police station following advice from the CPS.

Mr Clifford was later released on bail and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 28 May.

The first case of underage sexual misconduct/indecent assault was back in 1977/78 over 35 years ago. With the best will in the world I cannot see how any sort of meaningful trial could proceed with such a long time gap.

I have mixed feelings about these current celeb sex abuse claims. Whilst I recognise the CPS would not bring charges without the realistic prospect of a conviction , I struggle to see given the huge amount of time that has passed how any solid conviction could possibly be obtained.

Why did none of these girls/woman ever come forward thirty, twenty, ten or five years ago...????

On his arrival at court, dozens of photographers and camera crews crowded around Mr Clifford and his wife. Several members of the public shouted abuse.

BBC correspondent Sangita Myska said Mr Clifford looked very shaken and his wife appeared to be on the brink of tears.

Under the bail conditions, he must live at his Surrey home and is not allowed to contact prosecution witnesses.
