I'd love to have one of those old projectors in the pic at the top of the page in my house! Not to use obviously, but they just look so cool. Like something Ming would have in his Palace in Flash Gordon.
It saddens me to think how much of this stuff ends up being crushed and sold for scrap.

...ahh, thanks for posting that, I hadn't seen it...the images fit perfectly with the song and I would say that it's thought provoking but actually I think it's more 'numbing'...because it's just all so sad..where there was laughter, where there was voices, there is nothing...

..anyway, I have a fascination with abandoned buildings and stuff...just trying to kind of 'rebuild' it all again in your mind to what it was before and the memories and secrets it could tell sort of thing...

This abandoned asylum was one of Britain’s first 'villa-style' psychiatric hospitals - but since closing down 10 years ago, it is now a mess of crumbling brick walls and haunting empty corridors.

Bangour Village Hospital, near Dechmont in West Lothian, opened in 1906 for Edinburgh’s 'lunatic paupers', and for almost 100 years housed patients with mental health problems from across Central Scotland.

But after St John’s Hospital opened in nearby Livingston in 1989, it was slowly shut down, and in 2004 the last remaining ward was closed.

Today, it is a relic of its former past, and its Grade A-listed buildings leave a chill down your spine as you walk around the 960 acre estate.

Built on the Bangour Estate, which was bought by the Edinburgh District Lunacy Board (EDLB) in 1902, it was set up as a new style of psychiatric hospital based on the Continental Colony system

In 1910, this grand palace was built as a home for Polish Royalty. The rest of the century proved uncertain for the country and under communist rule the palace became an agricultural school, as well as a home for mentally handicapped adults and children. The former palace was deserted following the fall of the USSR.

I am a writer and I do exactly the same thing with old sepia/monochrome photographs of strangers which I come across from time-to-time. I am fascinated by the people within the photos; who were they? What's their story? And always, there is a sense of sadness - not only because these people are long gone, but because the era has too. Your photographs are beautiful and sad, and wistful, and evoke the same sort of emotion in me.

I don't know who you are, but from your choice of avatar, what you have written on here at times, and this fascination you have, I think that you are a beautiful person - in the true sense of the word. Thank you.

I don't think so, I'd love it if there were, I'd love nothing more than to have a bit of a nose round inside of one, i find abandoned buildings beautiful and fascinating, the idea that no matter how much time passes, the integral structure and purity of a building can stay there and pass the test of time is heaven to me.

..that's a really lovely way of saying it, Liam...I think also for me, I love to imagine them how they were when they were in use and imagine the people who used them/worked in them or lived in them, you know...imagine 'their stories' and just imagine how different the whole landscape around them would have looked as well..we have quite a few where I live and also old bunkers and things from the war ..most are either unsafe to go in or 'haunted'..or so the 'story' goes.....

I see them as a message of life, that no matter what you're put through, no matter the conditions you have to face, if you're built good, then what's at your heart will help keep you up and strong :D
'Haunted' is even better, the stories are what helps make these buildings interesting, if someone says 'don't go in there, it's haunted' that would make me more determined than ever to get myself in there

Right? there's still a noose at the top of the stairs, because apparently a judge in the 17th century iirc, used to hang people there and there were 180 hung there in total, it's totally not the same noose, but it adds to the feel i suppose

Nara Dreamland in Japan was built in 1961 after Disneyland took the world by storm. The entrance to the park was almost identical to Disneyland and included its own version of Sleeping Beauty's Castle. The park closed in 2006 because of low visitor numbers.

..oh wow....there is another thread about 'people' ..their faces, which I also find fascinating like you do..my favourite 'people' pics are ones of them just doing ordinary things in the street or in a café or whatever and completely unaware that they are being photographed...I particularly love black and white pics and tend to have all of my own printed in black and white as well...you should check out the thread Kirk and maybe post some yourself...what do you write, btw..?...

Thank you, I will check it out. I write short stories, of which I've been lucky enough to have a few published (horror, paranormal, and romance) and have had very near misses with a couple of TV screenplays - both were well received but ultimately rejected, though I did receive encouraging feedback from both channels - a rarity in itself.

Unfortunately, life's realities overtook my literary aspirations, and I 'temporarily' put writing on the 'back-burner' because I had a living to earn. That 'temporary' period became ten years, but I have just started writing again, so who knows - 'que sera, sera'.

'Food first, then aesthetics' (apologies to Bertolt Brecht :hehe: ).

..you can almost see people sitting on those chairs, can't you...all drinking their beer, chatting and playing dominoes.....I don't think I've ever actually watched Most Haunted, do they 'find' anything in the houses or just go to 'feel' scared..?...

The locations and brief backstories are the only things which make Most Haunted worth viewing. The actual content has no paranormal value at all and is shameless scripted fiction. Nothing ever happens, except noises and the odd item being 'thrown' - for which the only 'evidence' we have is the dialogue between the show's cast - sorry, presenters - and at any time when an inanimate object slightly moves ie a table or chair, we are never shown a full shot of the object to prove that no one has 'helped' it move.

As someone who is deeply interested in the paranormal I find the program a joke which actually lends weight to paranormal de-bunkers, in much the same way as fake clairvoyants like Colin Fry and company, are used as evidence by skeptics that all clairvoyants are fake.

It's just my opinion and I apologise if I have veered off the subject of this thread. :wavey:

...ahh, it's a shame about your writing because it's something you must love doing..?...but maybe you'll get time to fit some in with your work at some point in the future..?...but you're right of course, it's not something you can prioritise unless it's making you enough income as well...and it'll always be on that back burner when you have time to pick it off again, which I truly hope you will...we have a creative writing section on the forum as well, I don't know if you've seen it..?..but you could post some of your short stories in there if you wanted to...I'd love to read some, sometime...

..so, inspired by Chewy and a thread he made, this is somewhere I had not heard of before but so fascinating and so eerie...

The Salton Sea is one of the most enigmatic places in the Southwest–an otherworldly lake in the barren, naked desert, sandwiched between the resorts of Palm Springs and the Mexican border. Its languid surface, at 228 feet below sea level, is only five feet higher than the lowest point in Death Valley. This former resort region had its heyday during the early 1960’s, when it was a bustling place filled with weekend revelers from the nearby Los Angeles and San Diego metropolitan areas. For a time, the Sea was a haven for boaters and fishermen. Today, the few people who remain are hardy individualist types looking for isolation and a cheap place to live. The air is heavy with heat and decay. It’s a lonely, haunted place.

..yeah, I think that the thing with old derelict/abandoned buildings, LPL is that they leave for us to be able to imagine so much about them../those times when they were filled with people, you know...the lives/the loves they have known and the secrets that they hold...it really does stir the imagination...

Idk if anyone has mentioned this place before, but nestled not too far from me in the Welsh hills is a place known as "The Cloud House".

Check it out, photographers/explorers are forever visiting. Basically a fully furnished, abandoned farmhouse last lived in in probably the early 80's. The owners just upped and left one day for whatever reason and didn't return. Literally in the middle of NOWHERE in Snowdonia.

When I go to Turkey every year we always see this abandoned hotel.

It's been abandoned for about 20 years and apparently the money ran out... What a shame... It could have been a great hotel looking at it!

Wow - Are the doors just left open, Jonnii? I'd love to come and look around this. I love old abandoned buildings - especially left with furniture and effects in situ.

I think that it must be valuable being in Snowdonia?

I might look into this.

UPDATE

I have researched this and I am disappointed that there is a considerable consensus of opinion - some from 'locals' who say that the whole thing is 'staged'.

Looking at the photos again - on here and online - those items on the dressing table do look rather suspiciously 'arranged'; like a variety of curios crammed together.

I don't know.

It's boarded up mostly but if you YouTube it and find people's vlogs visiting there you can gain access through one kitchen/pantry window. I've never heard of it being a set-up before or anything, someone I know went as he and his friends are big into like urban exploration and abandoned buildings (they go around old asylums and stuff, creepy) and they didn't mention that anything looked "staged" so idk. Who knows lol.

Another one near me that alot seem to be interested in, just outside the town of Oswestry is the "Red Dress Manor". Aptly named due to the red bridesmaid that still hangs in one of the bedroom wardrodes, there's also a photograph on display of a lady wearing said dress at a wedding. Totally abandoned house that I hear is being slowly and sadly weathered away.

The Station Hotel, Ayr.

The Station Hotel is a grand Victorian building situated in the heart of Ayr town centre. The hotel consists of 71 bedrooms, complete with en-suite bathrooms, plus a host of suits for functions and a cocktail lounge.

The hotel, which is attached to Ayr railway station, was originally opened by the Glasgow and South Western Railway in June 1866 and become part of the British Transport Hotels (BTH) at Nationalisation. It was sold by BTH in October 1951 and has changed ownership a number of times, having been owned by Stakis Hotels, Quality, and Swallow Hotels.

The Station Hotel is currently the oldest and most famous hotel in Ayr. The hotel has retained almost all of its original features inside and out. The hotel started to turn away customers in 2014 and closed around 2015. After suffering neglect for some time beforehand, the building is now deteriorating; the railway station have had to take action to safeguard their customers from falling debris.

It's been set on fire.

Residents of Ayr have called for the derelict station hotel to be demolished after it was ravaged by two fires in four months.

Firefighters were sent to the scene on Monday afternoon and were still on site on Tuesday morning.

Rail services remain disrupted through Ayr and roads have been closed for public safety.

Two teenage boys, 17 and 13, have been arrested and charged with wilful fire-raising.

They will both be reported to the relevant authorities and further inquiries are ongoing.....
