The city of Manchester will attempt to break a world record by performing the 'Gangnam Style' dance at its New Year's Eve celebrations.

City councillor Pat Karney will lead revellers in the record attempt, which will see a public performance of the infamous Psy dance routine.

Karney is hoping that enough people will take part to allow Manchester to break the record for the most people performing the routine in a public place.

Cllr Karney told the Manchester Evening News: "We need everyone, before people come down, to be practising at home like me. I've been practising an hour a day since before Christmas.

"We want to make sure Manchester gets in the Guinness World Records with it. I won't be happy with half-hearted efforts. Anyone with half-hearted dance moves will be removed," he joked.

The New Year's celebrations in the city will take place in Albert Square. A dance rehearsal is scheduled for 11.15pm, before the world record attempt at just before midnight.

'Gangnam Style' has become a global hit for Korean singer Psy, and the song's music video recently surpassed one billion YouTube views.
