Yesterday, Hasbro launched a new campaign called Save Your Token that allows Monopoly fans to choose which of the classic game tokens should be retired. The battleship, thimble, iron, top hat, wheelbarrow, Scottie dog, racer and shoe are all up for elimination, many of which have been part of the game since the 1930s. Hasbro is also encouraging fans to pick a new token (a robot, a helicopter, a guitar, a ring or a cat) that will replace the empty slot. According to USA Today, a limited edition Monopoly set featuring all of the classic tokens as well as the five prototypes will be released in Target stores mid-February.

Just America for now but it'll probably drift over here eventually. Poll coming~

Getting rid of the dog and the hat would be madness. I wouldn't mind the boat going, never use it... I usually go for the thimble or the hat.

Monopoly fans have voted to give the iron the boot and welcome in the cat as the new token for the much-loved board game.

Time was ticking for classic tokens the shoe, wheelbarrow and iron after voting closed for which one should get kicked out on Tuesday.

In the end it was the latter that was dropped but it was a close call, with the item being neck and neck with the wheelbarrow until the end.

The cat becomes the first new item to be introduced since the 1950s.

Thousands of fans registered their opinion on Facebook for which one of the pieces should be replaced after makers Hasbro launched a competition.

The Save Your Token Campaign allowed voters to decide to replace one of the classic tokens with either a robot, diamond ring, cat, helicopter or guitar.

The eight previous icons that were up for the chop, included an iron, racing car, Scottie dog, a shoe, thimble, top hat, wheelbarrow and battleship.

Fans from 120 countries got to decide what the new piece would be.

The game featuring the new icon will go on sale later this year.
