So, Pacino V's DeNiro has been done a million times but I think it's time Daniel Day Lewis was added to the list. If he wins the Best Actor award in the Oscars this year, he'll make history by being the first actor to have won 3 Best Actor Oscars.

This is as bad as my Morgan vs Samuel thread.

Robert Deniro edges it for me.

I would rank them :

Day Lewis > Pacino > Deniro

They're all brilliant though

Only seen Gangs of New York and There will be Blood, both good films but not in the same class as Films like The Godfather, Taxi Driver and Scarface

Al and DeNiro are both better than him, the only thing he has over them is that he hasn't sold himself out and made loads of terrible movies in the last 10 years or so just for the money.

Good old Al is the best though.

Despite whether or not you prefer a film or not, Day lewis has been outstanding in some some films. My left Foot for example, he was incredible in that even though the film itself wasn't as popular as Gang of New York etc

these are the 3 along with nichlson are the greatest living actors , deniro is the best imho , pacino second, day lewis third
all are almost supernaturally gifted actors with extraordinary energy
in real life all 3 are reserved softly spoken shy intelligent men who come alive in front of the camera
whilst its fun to compare it vital to appreciate all their genius
also not to forget the legends who inspired them to start with i.e. bogart, cagney, stewart, dean, clift, lancaster, douglas, brosnon, newman, wayne, mcqueen, burton, lemmon, brando, etc

In fairness Daniel Day Lewis probably is a far better actor. But Pacino and De Niro have all the cool characters and movies.

deniro is miles more prolific, hes made the most great and the most original movies
many of his classics were made in the 70s 80s and 90s though hes still been in a few great films since
hes also got way more movies graded over 8 out of 10 on the worldwide internet movie database than any actor in history
statistically hes made more movies, made more critically acclaimed movies and made more money than these other 3 legends
it underlines how great the other 3 are that this is even a discussion
I would say beyond these 4 alive today only the likes of sean penn and anthony hopkins, maybe harrison ford ,are even in the same ballpark

De Niro for me. He can play any part. The other two take themselves waaay too seriously. I remember watching a programme with Al Pacino called "Looking for Richard" about Shakespeare's Richard III. He did a scene from it and totally over-egged it. Afterwards he asked everyone how they liked it and they were all "Oh you were amazing Mr Pacino..."

Daniel Day Lewis is pretty serious alright I'd say, he's into that method acting isn't he? He's still an unbelievable actor though, serious or not

I actually love deniro. I do.
There is something profoundly sincere about him as a man. hes a movie legend hes never been or wanted to be a movie star, hes all about the work and the people..he also seems devoid of all ego, hes always been about keeping everything real, theres always a very black maudlin humour to all his work, I even found heat, casino, goodfellas, deer hunter, raging bull, mean streets and of course taxi driver hilarious
he rehearses for roles by becoming the person....he drove taxis for 6 months and his passengers thought hed fallen on hard times BUT he didnt explain he was rehearsing for a role, thats the sign of his humility....he rehearsed for a strroke victim role by hobbling round his beloved new york on a zimmer frame for weeks, he learned jazz saxaphone for new york new york, learnt latin for true confessions, became a world class boxer for the raging bull, spent time with vets for jacknife and ciminos magnificent deer hunter, spent months in a mental institution for awakenings, spent a lot of time with new jersey gangsters for godfather, sergio leones last epic once upon a time in america, goodfellas, casino etc etc the mans a genius with integrity, a very rare breed

hes won his 2nd oscar for raging bull he thanked everyone including jake lamottas brothers (even though hes sueing us! talk about keeping it real) hes won a few lifetime awards but when he won a serious one he concluded by saying it was more important for his family to be there and finished with the words goodnight everyone and goodnight gregory peck (he legend who passed that same day)

I don't think anybody embodies a character like Daniel Day-Lewis. De Nero and Pacino are both magnificent actors and have made some of the best films of all time, but they've made twice as many crap films. In terms of method acting, no one does it like Day-Lewis. :worship:
