Some beef burgers sold in supermarkets are said to contain DNA from horses.
According to BBC News, retailers affected in the UK and Ireland include Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, Iceland and Dunnes Stores.
Irish food safety authority FSAI came upon the results after 27 products were analysed. A beef burger sample from Tesco contained 29% horsemeat.
An FSAI spokesperson stated that the meat is perfectly safe to consume.
However, he added: "There is no clear explanation at this time for the presence of horse DNA in products emanating from meat plants that do not use horsemeat in their production process.
"In Ireland, it is not our culture to eat horsemeat and therefore, we do not expect to find it in a burger."
A number of samples also contained pig DNA.
Affected supermarkets have removed the burgers from store shelves.

:bawling: Just posted that on facebook earlier, it's seriously disturbing, they also found pig DNA in the burgers which is unfortunate for many people who don't eat pork either. :o

Yeah I was listening to this, they think that the majority of the meat is beef but then the companies buy in stuff to bind the burgers together from abroad and that's when the horsemeat came in :/

hhhmmm, well, I'm not sure how it was covered over there, but the Minister for Agriculture, Food & Marine was on the news here and they're investigating it so I presume it must be illegal otherwise why would they be doing it?
It's disgraceful that the companies here and in the UK either aren't testing what they're buying in or don't care.

I would imagine the list of ingredients would not match with what was actually contained in the burgers, so they would be therefore not comply with trading standards guidelines. A small tolerance only would be allowed percentage wise presumably. Otherwise the said stores would not be removing the offending items.

If people can stomach eating horse, then that's their choice. You buy a beefburger though, you don't expect to find horse meat in it, not in the UK. I hear some of their burgers also had pork in. Now, I'm not strictly kosher when it comes to eating meat, but some people are, so people who don't eat pork as a religious choice should feel pretty aggrieved.

Statement from Tesco:
We apologise.
You have probably read or heard that we have had a serious problem with three frozen beef burger products that we sell in stores in the UK and Ireland.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has told us that a number of products they have recently tested from one of our suppliers contained horsemeat.
While the FSAI has said that the products pose no risk to public health, we appreciate that, like us, our customers will find this absolutely unacceptable.
The products in our stores were Tesco Everyday Value 8 x Frozen Beef Burgers (397g), Tesco 4 x Frozen Beef Quarter Pounders (454g) and a branded product, Flamehouse Frozen Chargrilled Quarter Pounders.
We have immediately withdrawn from sale all products from the supplier in question, from all our stores and online.
If you have any of these products at home, you can take them back to any of our stores at any time and get a full refund. You will not need a receipt and you can just bring back the packaging.
We and our supplier have let you down and we apologise.
If you have any concerns, you can find out how to contact us at the bottom of this page, or go to any of our customer service desks in-store, or ask to speak to your local Store Manager.
So here’s our promise. We will find out exactly what happened and, when we do, we’ll come back and tell you.
And we will work harder than ever with all our suppliers to make sure this never happens again.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jan/18/cuts-horsemeat-scandal
The government has taken a system that was working reasonably well and in a drive to deregulate, has created a more fragmented and bureaucratic system and this horsemeat scandal has shown that there are serious flaws that need to be addressed," said Creagh.
Local authority trading standards officers are responsible for food inspections across the UK but unions say the service has been badly hit by government cuts. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills estimates that funding for trading standards services will fall from £213m in the 2011-12 to £140m by 2014.
