View Full Version : Valid reason for reporting a post seems restrictive.

I wanted to report a post elsewhere because I was unsure whether a post advocating something that is in violation of the criminal law, could be a TOS violation with vBulletin but on clicking the report button I got the box with this text.

This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts.

It seems here that you can have a polite post advocating a breach of criminal law, which can not be reported :conf:

Also if we spot say duplicate posts or off topic posts, they can not be reports.

Would it be possible to widen the range of posts that can be reported? I realise it could be, that on assessment, there is no issue with the post in question, but it would be nice to raise a question if we are unsure.

Jesus.

I doubt the moderators really care a great deal that I was talking openly about smoking pot. Especially given the context of the subject matter. I put forward a lengthy, respectable argument that you all but ignored in your continued cowardice.

Of course it's probably a violation of vBulletin guidelines somewhere down the line but it's not like anything is going to happen unless you summon them and even then they might do the same as the moderators.

Inwardly groan.

Aren't you a barrel of laughs?

So because it's illegal...people can't question that. Sounds awfully fascist to me. Reporting duplicate posts when 99% of the time they're a mistake that's caused by the slowness of the forum? Completely fair and justified.

Reported for spamming.

I did not think I was spamming, I have come across this before when I tried to report a post for other reasons, that I thought may be a problem only to read the above reporting restrictions, and being unable to proceed as the list of valid reasons being restricted.

I operate as a moderator elsewhere so I have seen this from the other side, and sometimes there is no issue with a post and this can be explained to the person raising the complaint, but at least the person raising the complaint was able to ask.

If a post may be advocating something unlawful that could put the whole forum at risk and those in charge. What if someone posts something that is libellous? That could put those running the forum and vBulletin may take action. See what happened when false allegations were made about a member of the House of Lords?

As for duplicate posts, they may have been caused by a problem with the forum and the poster is unaware that it has been duplicated or unsure how to rectify the issue. If I had a duplicate post and I wanted to report my own duplicate post, because I could not delete it, under the current restrictions I could not report it using the report function. I would have to PM a specific moderator and hope they were on duty.

This is a Big Brother forum...I expect the only way any person in the public eye (assuming it's not someone on here) will become aware of any form of libel will be if their attention is drawn towards it...I hardly doubt they're frequenting this forum every day in search of people trying to defame them. By reporting a post like that, then you are drawing attention to it and making matters worse, I doubt anything would happen if you didn't, so why go through the trouble of it and in the process cause trouble yourself?

And I've never had a problem with deleting a post or had to PM any moderator to remove it...I've just...removed it myself. So I'm not sure why I'd want to report my own duplicate post, as if it's such a pressing issue anyway.

On the libel front, the threads are open, and available to google, even if a non member can not post in it. Reporting areas are not available to non members and members who are not moderators. I operate on a forum run by vBulletin elsewhere.

Re duplicate posts, a poster may not be aware it has happened and may be off line. (I was using it as an example of how the restrictions prevent that being reported)

Are duplicate posts really that important that they're worthy of reporting just to have them removed though? Like...couldn't you just do that old fashioned thing that worked so well called...scrolling.
